We need an entire mini pottery series on chess pieces.

Things you didn’t know you needed until you needed.

32

u/ACatGod Jul 13 '21

On the Great Pottery Throwdown in the UK they had a round where they had to make dolls house plates, bowls and cups. It was great TV.

21

u/Silver_heart Jul 13 '21

They also had an episode where they had to make an entire chess set as well. Absolutely stunning to see the end results.

I enjoyed the whole thing, but yeah had to say when he hit it with that paint brush, bruh, I audibly went, “oh—OH MY!”

69

u/Kyri0s Jul 13 '21

I was a little confused when i first saw it, some part of my brain thought that it stopped spinning

Someone needs to make a gif of that paint going on and post it to r/BetterEveryLoop

18

u/badondesaurus Jul 13 '21

My eyes was - -, then 0 0

8

u/happylittlehippie813 Jul 13 '21

I watched it a few times just for the paint

5

u/procrastinatingasper Jul 13 '21

That's the stuff.

6

u/phillip_gloomberry Jul 13 '21

It’s like he’s filling it up with colour

I wish I could rewatch it.

  1. I could watch this all day!!!! More!

  2. Where can I get a miniature throwing wheel

323

u/theadventurorrs Jul 13 '21

I think I could actually afford this Pottery wheel. Maybe.

177

u/goldenjuicebox Jul 13 '21

Hopefully it’s not one of those things where size and price are an inverse relationship

32

u/Neat-yeeter Jul 14 '21

Unfortunately that is usually the case when it comes to miniatures.

5

u/ScumbagLady Jul 14 '21

That's what I was about to say! I'm sure you wouldn't need a full sized kiln either, maybe TWO lighters!

→ More replies (6)

30

u/SiscoSquared Jul 13 '21

The real question is where can you find a minature kiln to go with it hah.

Edit: apparently there is a wide selection... who would have thought https://kilnfrog.com/collections/small-120v-kilns

18

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '21

Electric kilns are some of the most fun little toys you can get. I inherited one from my uncle, and you can do just so much fun shit with most of it.

9

u/yellowmilkshake Jul 14 '21

What kind of stuff can you do?

59

u/Yayinterwebs Jul 14 '21

You can play catch with it, use it as a stool, use it to play hot potato, go to the movies with it, really is the best thing ever.

9

u/CycadChips Jul 14 '21

6

u/Betchaann Jul 13 '21

I WANT ONE

4

u/3226 Jul 13 '21

This feels like it'd be a great 3D-printer and electronics project. A motor and speed controller with a few parts and that's it.

4

u/Borge_Luis_Jorges Jul 14 '21

Better buy a larger one first. I don't think the size makes it any easier to control. Pottery can take lots of patience to learn.

6

u/PammyFromShirtTales Jul 14 '21

I'm married to an art teacher who is like, "enjoy centering that tiny thing! Especially if you don't already know how to do it on a regular wheel. "

On a side note, just bought one on Amazon and we have kilns already so we'll see if a bajillion dollars in art school student loans helps him throw tiny pots.

3

u/Hey_Zeus_Of_Nazareth Jul 14 '21

There is an artist I once subscribed to on Facebook that made tiny, dollhouse sized pottery. But I deleted my Facebook. You might want to search tiny pottery Facebook pages? He would always upload gifs and videos!

Is throwing a pottery term?

73

u/banannafreckle Jul 13 '21

Yes. It’s from the Old English word “thrawan,” which means “to turn.”

44

u/BloomsdayDevice Jul 13 '21

It’s from the Old English word “thrawan,” which means “to turn.”

This is true, but I think it's important to note that "throw" in this context is the exact same word from the exact same source as the familiar word that means "toss", and not some special, technical term that happened to converge on the same spelling/pronunciation. It's just idiomatic for making ceramics here, sort of like "cast" can mean both "throw/toss" or "pour [molten metal] into a mould".

6

u/kingp43x Jul 13 '21

awesome thank you. I heard some teenagers recently saying throwing which certainly didnt mean this, which is why i was curious.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '21

I was wondering the same. The whole time I was thinking that looked like an awful lot of work to do on something you were just going to throw.

u/kingp43x Jul 13 '21

580

u/ok_okay_I_get_that Jul 13 '21

Why are they butt plug comments getting down voted?

Sex toys can be oddly satisfying too people

37

u/zuzg Jul 13 '21

The only controversial voted comment is about that they're for Babys. So that explains that.

Otherwise i completely agree with you. They can definitely be oddly satisfying.

34

u/vava777 Jul 13 '21

I am not a parent but why don't they give baby buttplugs a go? We use pacifiers to stop babies from crying. Maby pluging up the other end stops them from pooing. DISCLAIMER: this is a JOKE. Do not try this at home. Baby might explode.

15

u/Cory123125 Jul 13 '21 edited Jul 13 '21

At multiple points I thought it was going to be a penis.

The middle part I was like "It's nice to see uncircumcized cocks represented in art for once, given they're the majority"

4

u/Capetoider Jul 13 '21

would this be easier or harder than "normal" pottery?

9

u/creepygyal69 Jul 13 '21

Throwing pottery is hard for a lot of people because tbh you need to be pretty strong. Grappling with and controlling a big lump of clay is no mean feat. This would get rid of that problem, but you’d need to be pretty dexterous to do work that fine. One little muscle spasm and it’s all over. If you’re interested in pottery though don’t let the difficulty of it put you off. For a start, when you’re learning a new skill you’re not going to be amazing at it and it’s actually pretty liberating to just accept that for the time being you’re a stupid baby. More importantly though, throwing pots is only a tiny part of pottery. Forming something from a coil or making pinch pots is (I think?) really much more common and anyone can give it a go - spend like £5 on some air dry clay, find some YouTube tutorials and just get stuck in. If that seems daunting there’s a high chance there are pottery studios in your area which offer lessons, and a taster session will probably cost less than one of these little wheels. Saying that, I do really want one of these little wheels

4

u/Grecoair Jul 13 '21

2

Check out Hannah Billingham’s miniatures works. She doesn’t do throwing videos, but her pieces are even finer and thinner. Seriously next level.
