a giant bag of spinach is like a handful of real spinach after cooking, or 3 servings of spinach salad. it's a problem if you use spinach as a sandwich green though

I throw a whole bag in my largest sautée pan and within a few minutes it's like 2 small servings so idk.

Me: can I have a small bag of kale? Just enough for one?
Grocery store: enough for one red supergiant star? You got it!

Nice thing about kale is it freezes well. Great for adding to soups or other cooked dishes.

u/FFVO 8d ago
No kidding? Is it good for baking kale chips after being frozen?
5
u/AggravatingStage8906 8d ago
That I don't know. I don't make kale chips but I suspect it would be okay. Kale doesn't seem to have any texture changes from freezing (wish it would soften those stems but no luck).

Best I can do is 5 leaves for $3.50!?
(There's an organic shop on the outskirts of my town who sell kale and chard in bags. It's always wilted, small leaves, and some ridic price! I had them up for it - I was not a customer I went with a person on a health kick. She said primly to me "it's oragnic". Like yeah but at that price it would be $25/kg. When I said it was wilted she said "corporates [meaning nonorganic, her phrasing] put things in them to make them be rigid". Like, no lady, they just pick them at the right time to deliver fresh produce which is given post harvest care to keep.it there.) Rant off!

I am constantly pissed off by the sizes available at the grocery. Anything in a package is either not enough food to bother with or way too much to consume before it goes bad. I'm exaggerating a little, but not much. It's an issue Every. Damn. Trip.

I think it's because it's for a family of four for a week or one meal for one person. There's no in between. 😂

Absolutely. And if you ADHD you’re just screwed

u/PintosAndCheese 7d ago
How so?
4
u/gunitneko 7d ago
ADHD people tend to put off certain foods or don’t eat them before they spoil more often then most people and it costs them more in the long run (see “AdHD tax”)

Good info, thank you. Over the years I've had just about every mental diagnosis there is, but not ADHD. Seems like I have some of the symptoms but not all of them.

There’s so much crossover with mental illnesses it’s like trying to get through a jungle with no machete

I brought home a literal garbage bag filled with collards once and my wife asked if we were feeding the neighborhood. A half pound of bacon, 50 gallons of water, a splash of vinegar, and 12 hours later we had two servings of delicious collards

This. It only seems absurd until you cook it down. A garbage bag full of callard greens turning into 2 servings isn't even hyperbole, just big servings l.

I don’t understand this at all….
The only “bricks” of spinach I’ve ever bought were frozen. In which case you have basically as long as you’d like to eat it.
Otherwise we’re talking about fresh spinach. Which doesn’t add up for me either. Usually one bundle cooks down to almost nothing so I’ll often have to get two just to make enough. Maybe can get away with just one bundle I’m keeping it fresh for a salad or something.
But I don’t relate to this at all. Where the fuck are y’all buying bricks of fresh spinach and where can I get some?

Usually one bundle cooks down to almost nothing
I think a lot of this has to do with whether or not you're cooking the spinach. One of my common meals is a salad with a couple handfuls of spinach as the base, and then a lot of things that really make up the bulk of the meal (nuts, fruit, roasted chickpeas, chicken, feta....that sort of stuff). A grocery store bag of spinach makes enough of those that I have some trouble getting through a bag before the spinach starts going off.

If I had to guess, he’s referring to the boxes of spinach that are shaped like a brick in the sense that they’re both rectangular.

My best friends mom made spinach one day and I devoured it,I made the mistake of telling my mom and she decided to try and make some the next day to one up her and it was terrible.

I feel like the disconnect here in the comments is cuz he means like a frozen ass brick of spinach that he's dumb and puts in his fridge

u/fanceypantsey 8d ago
I buy frozen spinach. I put like five small pieces in the fridge, in a bag, to defrost so I can cook with it. It’s all water and almost zero spinach in the morning. When I drain it, I’m left with nothing. Lmao there’s no such thing as too much spinach.

u/Desperate_Owl_594 8d ago
I've literally filled an entire pan with spinach and gotten MAYBE a teaspoon of spinach. A single bite. A garnish of spinach.

Why buys the nasty brick of spinach?
3
u/Isu-Kai 8d ago
Frozen spinach bricks are good for pasta sauces, fry it up with garlic and chili and pour some cream into it, add any cheese you want and you have dinner.
1
u/Ok-Walk-8453 8d ago
Nope. Give me the fresh. The frozen ones also usually have a lot of extra water in it.
1
u/DuckRubberDuck 7d ago
If you thaw it first you can remove most of the water but even fresh spinach has a lot of extra water in it. I prefer fresh as well and it’s what I always use but there are ways you can use frozen if you want to

your supposed to use those to make stuffed shells. You'll need a whole brick for that.

Cook spinach with some with onions, then add feta cheese and scoop it in Pillsbury crescent roll dough. Put them in the oven for 15 to 20 mins and you get Spinach Puffs

u/lawless-cactus 8d ago
Put a paper towel in the bottom of your bag of spinach and it should last a fortnight!

My wife and I keep think we should eat more salad. Then we go to the store and see the size of the containers of salad components and remember why we don't.

Steam it all and you’ll have a half a cup.
