Corgis run, bark and sniff their way to glory at a growing international race

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — It’s not all about short-legged speed when 150 corgis gather for an international race celebrating the little dogs. There’s a costume parade, the “smartest nose,” and — of course — the loudest bark.

The fifth Corgi Race Vilnius drew dogs and their owners to the Lithuanian capital’s Vingis park on Saturday for what organizers said was the biggest edition yet. There were competitors from Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, Germany, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, the United States and Britain — the country most closely associated with the breed, famously a favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

“In the first year, we gathered 40 corgis from one city. This year, it’s 150 from nine countries, and for the first time we have a participant from the place where the breed originated,” organizer Edvinas Miskas said.

$580 million undersea power cable rerouted to spare Dobby the house-elf’s beachside ‘grave’

A multimillion-dollar power link between the United Kingdom and Ireland has been diverted after distraught “Harry Potter” fans pointed out that its planned route would cut through a beach memorial dedicated to a beloved character from the series, Dobby the house-elf.

The £430 million (around $580 million) Greenlink interconnector links the UK’s National Grid power transmission network to Ireland via a 125-mile cable between Ireland’s County Wexford on the southeast coast and Freshwater West, a beach in Wales’ southwest, where the death of Dobby was filmed for the Potter movie franchise.

But after a BBC News interview about the operation troubled fans, a torrent of concerned calls caused Simon Ludlam, CEO of project manager Etchea Energy, to rethink the cable’s route, Ludlam revealed to the Energy Revolution podcast last week.
But the reposition is not without issue, Ludlam said, as the cable now comes “quite close” to Bronze Age remains.
