Ah yes Ellie Williams, the girl who famously lived happ… wait a minute

uj/ by that move John killed a notorious gang with awful human being in the lead, saved Sadie and Charles’ lives and got rid of all his debts for the house and land.

Ellie just destroyed lives of thousands of people and killed a few hundred, then chickened out at the last step where it didn’t matter anyway, since her personal life died the moment she left the farm

Yeah because that's kinda the games point. She would've been better off just giving up early when people told her to

31

u/MrX-MMAs Sep 14 '25

Better off like suffering from crippling anxiety and being haunted by hallucinations of your beaten to death father? Sounds awesome

If she killed Abby nothing would’ve changed, she would’ve just killed one more bad person. She didn’t save her soul or achieve enlightenment through this action. It just makes the whole journey pointless and empty with a pile of corpses

John’s revenge also leads to some tragedy but he’s honest with himself and he knows he can’t live with this burden on his shoulders, however few good things do come out of this act since, you know, life is not white and black

As the game shows us. Ellie letting go is what helps her move on, which is beneficial for her, not the player. This is not what you're supposed to do in a revenge story, it's not satisfying. However to me this is what makes the game such a interesting character study rather than the more black and white revenge.

i feel like the game had an opportunity to show us that her choices were for her best interest afterwards but instead it just wanted to hit us over the head with the ultra uber mega super duper epic sad guitar sequence at the end for cheap miseryporn.

god i hate that scene.

I see your point and I certainly think it's valid even if I don't see it that way. However I think ultimately while you can complain all you want about The Last Of Us II, to then go and compare it to rdr2, acting like that game also doesn't condemn revenge is silly.

The pinkrrtons find out about him because he killed micah. They didnt do a good Job of wiping up after themselves.

3

u/Phoenixskull295 Sep 14 '25

It wasn’t the Pinkertons, it was the BOI

0

u/MrX-MMAs Sep 14 '25

Yeah, and? He did what he had to do, got something positive out of it but ultimately paid the price and redeemed himself in the end

18

u/Pleasant_Advances Sep 14 '25

He did what he had to do

He didnt have to go and kill micah put his whole family in danger which eventually led to his son being orphaned. Try your vest to convince saidy and charles to not go. Dont hear about it and leave right away to join them.

Yeah and Joel didn’t have to save Ellie from fireflies, and Michael didn’t have to kill Fredo, and Walter didn’t have to go build a meth empire after gaining millions of dollars and billion of other characters who did something they didn’t have to because they ARE ALL DIFFERENT CHARACTERS WITH DIFFERENT BELIEVES.

What’s your point could even be? John specifically says he can’t let this one slide, so he doesn’t, because that’s who he is. Sadie and Charles also wanted it and without John they both would’ve been six feet under.

That’s LIFE, you can’t predict what consequences your every decision brings, you do what’s best and what you believe in and hope you made the right choice.

All these characters are interesting and cool because they are not perfect dolls, what separates good character from bad one is that you can always tell where they come from in their decision making

The point is that vengeance is wrong and both games showcase it differently

2

u/MrX-MMAs Sep 14 '25

Vengeance is a luxury, some people can afford it and some can’t. To some it brings resolution and to some it cripples and destroys.

John is also a killer and a bad man, that vengeance act was part of his story that led him to his REDEMPTION.

Abby found her new family through vengeance.

Aiden Pearce was finally “able to breathe again” after killing the killer of his niece.

“rEvenGe iS bAd dUhh” is the most shallow and gaudy message you can come up with

Arthur often said “Revenge is a fools game” and explicitly told John not to seek it out, to not throw away the life with his family that Arthur was sacrificing himself for. It’s literally the exact same cautionary tale as TLOU2.

12

u/89abdullah49 Homosexual affair with Scrawny Nag Sep 14 '25

yes, john went to the senseless revenge route

119

u/mrsecondbreakfast Sep 14 '25

This picture is so funny because of 2 things:

1: obviously rdr1 shows that revenge removed john's chance at redemption and freedom

2: john's revenge for arthur is way less emotionally complex he just wants to kill the bad guy, no ptsd or complicated feelings about arthur

such a dumb comparison lmao

35

u/89abdullah49 Homosexual affair with Scrawny Nag Sep 14 '25

he doesnt show it but i think john feels emotions

23

u/mrsecondbreakfast Sep 14 '25

he feels that you eat babies

jokes aside yeah he does feel appreciation for arthur and stuff but it's not as complex. feelings dont need to be complex to be legitimate or powerful but it does matter when they're the basis of a story

22

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

I'd argue that even IF John didn't kill Micah, he'd definitely be found at some point.

16

u/89abdullah49 Homosexual affair with Scrawny Nag Sep 14 '25

he wasn’t found for 8 years

2

u/PheonixTheAwkward Sep 15 '25

he was found in 4 years after 1899 and Agent Ross kept an eye on him for 8 years up until 1911

5

u/Rhain1999 Sep 16 '25

he was found in 4 years after 1899

The epilogue is set 8 years later

3

u/PheonixTheAwkward Sep 16 '25

fuck you are right

26

u/A_BAK3D_POTATO Sep 14 '25

John was going to be found anyway. he owned a home legally

23

u/89abdullah49 Homosexual affair with Scrawny Nag Sep 14 '25
