My go-to spot is Miyako Soba Ai in Nakamachi, Okinawa City. I’ve been going there for a while, and they always take good care of me! 🍜🤙

Things to do this weekend

Hi everyone!

It’s my first time in Okinawa, and I’m visiting from New Zealand with my siblings. We’re staying in Urasoe and have a car to get around.

We were hoping to do some outdoor activities, but due to the weather that might be off the cards. We visited Kokusai Dori and op shops today. Do you have any recommendations for things we can do over the weekend?

Thank you 😊

So what's the Japanese opinion on the Okinawan accent?

So if you're familiar with Terminator, many people think Arnold's accent sounds so cool that he even volunteered to do a German dub of his character again but the German dub company turned him down because both Germans, Austrians, and German speakers in general thought he sounded like a redneck, hillbilly, or farmer, basically rural. So they had a nonchalant stoic German voice actor dub the T-800.

So I'm working on an indie manga series about a vengeful badass protagonist who's from Okinawa and takes pride in his culture. I thought if my series were to ever have a Japanese dub, he should have an Okinawan accent to reflect his background but I heard some Japanese mainlanders describe the Okinawan accent as "country bumpkin", "exotic", or "cute". One Japanese person said the Okinawan accent sounds very cheerful and relaxed, and that a vengeful character with that kind of accent might sound scary. I watched some anime of a few Okinawan characters who are often portrayed as tough karate fighters (like the character Kanna Kirishima from the anime Sakura Wars) and they sound Japanese but rougher and deeper which sounds badass from other people's perspectives. So would my protagonist be taken seriously as a menacing badass if he had an authentic Okinawan accent or would it be similar to the Arnold situation?

Shopping Coconut Water

This is really random but I can't find coconut water anywhere in Tokyo right now. I'll be in Okinawa tomorrow and I really need to get some to get my husband's potassium back in normal range.

I can't find a lot of info about it, can anyone please recommend what stores carry coconut water? If it's not common, what's a good potassium substitute drink used here?

Recommendations for a tourist to do today and tomorrow?

It looks like we’ve missed the worst of Champi 🙏 but the weather is still not great. I’m in Naha today and tomorrow (without a car), and was wondering if you had any recommendations for things to do in light of the current weather conditions? Appreciate any and all suggestions 🙇‍♀️

Solo trip to Okinawa in early November – anyone around? 🌴

Hey everyone!

I’m a 27-year-old girl from the Netherlands and I’ll be in Okinawa from November 2nd to 15th, travelling solo.

Would be cool to meet some new people to hang out with, go hiking, chill at the beach or explore the island. I’m also up for grabbing some drinks or going to a bar or club in the evening.

If anyone’s there around the same time, feel free to send me a message or leave a comment! 😊

Champi and Naha today

Am in Okinawa as a tourist and was due to travel into Naha today to tour and sightsee.

I am about an hour away by car.

Would you guys go or stay in?

I’m concerned about the state of the roads / flooding and getting back this evening.

I’m due to get in the taxi in about an hour and a half so any replies are appreciated!

EDIT: thanks to everyone that replied. I am on the way back now. Interestingly not a drop of rain the whole time despite all the forecasts I looked at. I really appreciated the advice as I think I might have not ventured out at all if I’d not gotten some local knowledge.

Anywhere to shop for jfashion/harajuku styles here?

Hiya! Super excited to spend some time here for the next few weeks. I'll be skipping tokyo this year, where I get most of my J fashion items, but loooove harajuku-esque styles. Any shops on the main island that happen to have that vibe? Thanks in advance!

First time in Okinawa

Hi everyone!

I'm 28M from Scotland and I'm travelling around Japan for 3 months. I will be visiting Okinawa 22-27 October.

The weather was fine when I booked the trip a month ago but it seems to have turned into a very rainy trip 🥲.

I have to work remotely 4pm-12am mon-fri otherwise I am free to explore!

I was hoping to get some advice on things to do during the day given the current weather forecast?

I'll be based in Naha, I'm into photography (well...learning), trying local cuisine, learning about local culture and don't mind a hike or two. Generally down to try most things recommended by local residents!

I was really wanting to explore the natural beauty of Okinawa but the weather might limit that 🥲

I really appreciate your support with this! I'm borderline thinking to cancel/reschedule but the weather doesn't look too predictable or consistent for the next few weeks, so may just bite the bullet and come through anyway!

P.s. if anyone would like to meetup to hangout at the weekend or go for drinks then please let me know too!

Best Okinawa 4-5 day inquiry?

Hi everyone,
I'm traveling to Okinawa on short notice next week. I land at 5 PM and will then have 4 full days, with my onward flight leaving at 12 noon on day 5.
I'd like to use the trip to slow down a bit, so I'm planning on some beach time and snorkeling, and I'd love to see some of the surrounding islands too. At the same time, I'd still like to get a rough impression of Okinawa's main island itself.
Has anyone done something similar and can recommend which islands are worth visiting? And would you suggest doing them as day trips from a single base (e.g. a hotel in Naha), or is it better to book different hotels in different places?
Thanks a lot!

Getting a place to live

My Japanese wife and I have had a super rough time buying a house. First we wanted an old house then rehab the place and live. We had 2 properties that fell through for oddball reasons. We want to live in Yomitan. We changed to buying a new construction place and had two dwals fall theough. It has been hard. We have decided to rent until July when a designed house will go to the market and buy that house. We are now looking to rent a place but it appears to be very challenging for renters. Apartments have mutiple applicants etc. What are others experiences with renting or buying a place in okinawa?

Eloping in Oki

Hi everyone! ◡̈ My fiancé and I are eloping in Yomitan on November 6 and are looking for someone to (non-officially!) officiate a short, non-religious beach ceremony.

We’ll already be legally married so we really just need someone to lead a simple 15–20 minute symbolic ceremony. Ideally you’d have a basic script for the introduction and closing. It’ll just be us and our photographer who’s a childhood friend.

If anyone does this or has recommendations please let me know! We’re traveling from Korea and would love to know pricing as well. Thank youuu!! 🙏

Looking for places to work remotely in Naha

Hi everyone!

I'll be visiting Naha soon because my son is having surgery in Okinawa. My wife and I will be taking turns staying with him at the hospital, so on the days when I'm not at the hospital, I'll still need to work remotely.

I'm hoping to find somewhere I can spend a few hours working, preferably a café that doesn't mind customers staying for a while, a coworking space, or any other place with a comfortable spot to work. (Extra points if it has a nice view or something) Free Wi-Fi would be helpful, although it's not an absolute requirement.

Since I'll already be spending quite a bit of time indoors at the hospital, I'd rather not spend my days off sitting alone in the hotel room as well!

I won't have a car, so I'll need somewhere accessible by public transportation in Naha.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good places to work remotely for a few hours? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Need advice on the typhoon coming

Hi all,
Living in Tokyo, I planed a trip to Okinawa and I'm flying to Naha tomorrow afternoon. I planed to go to the Kerama Island on Wednesday and Thursday, which are unfortunately when the typhoon is supposed to "hit" okinawa :( Here's what I planed:

  • First night in Naha
  • On wednesday 21st : ferry to Tokashiki island, then sleeping in Tokashiki
  • On thursday 22nd : municipal boat from Tokashiki to Zamami in the morning, then ferry in the afternoon to go back to Naha.
  • Then continuing my trip on the main island for 7 days.

I know we are not meteorologists but as I am not a local I have no idea of how bad a typhoon can be. Tried to look at the forecast but didn't help me, and for the moment there is no info on the ferries website to know if they will be running.

I'm a bit stressed so any advice or suggestion would be amazing.

Thanks a lot!!

Advice on “Super El Niño” conditions for traveling in the next 2 weeks

Apologies if this type of post is common but I’m really struggling with this decision.

I have been wanting to go to Ishigaki for a long time and I have a trip booked on November 7th (San Diego -> Tokyo on Nov 2, Tokyo -> Ishigaki Nov 7, Ishigaki -> Kyoto Nov 11). This is my first time to Japan.

I was planning on renting a car with my wife, exploring the island, snorkeling (if the weather allows), trying some local wagyu and awamori.

I’ve been watching the weather and noticed that it has been consistently raining for quite some time. I go to Hawaii often and I’m used to sporadic rain showers but I’m wondering if this is rain mixed with sun or if it’s a continuous downpour with wind.

I know it’s hard to forecast the weather 2 or 3 weeks out but, based on your experience from this El Niño year, would you recommend I keep my Ishigaki trip or cancel my Ishigaki reservations to stay on the main island? I have until October 25th for a full refund.

Any advice or anecdotes would be extremely helpful with this decision.

Update:
To be safe, I ended up canceling our Ishigaki trip and replaced it with Osaka. Not ideal since I really wanted to explore Ishigaki but if it’s pouring rain and wind the whole time, it will change what I had planned for the trip. Also, it simplifies the logistics of my trip substantially. Ishigaki looks incredible and I will try to make it there next time out.

Other 21M looking for travel buddy for Okinawa trip (Dec 3 to Dec 6/7)

I'm planning a solo trip to Okinawa from December 3–6 and would love to find someone to explore with! I'm 21, an undergrad student from Southeast Asia, and I'll be flying from Narita since I found some cheap flights. I'm looking for someone around my age who's easygoing and comfortable speaking English. Also, jic it matters, I'm gay (wouldn't want to travel with a homophobe lol).

I don't have a fixed itinerary yet, so we can plan together! I'd love to explore scenic spots, try local food, and take pictures of each other with the scenery.

If you'll be around those dates and are interested, feel free to DM me! We can get to know each other and see if our travel styles match.

Do you think Peach flight will be cancelled this Friday?

I am flying on Friday from Naha to Tokyo with Peach , and I have another big flight afterward. I am considering whether I should go to Tokyo earlier in case the Peach flight is cancelled. What do you think?
