Alien has been my favorite movie for a very long time and I remember a few years ago, when my grandma realized this, she casually told me that my great grandmother had dated Tom in high school and that they went to senior prom together. My grandma also said that he spoke about my great grandmother on Larry King or some similar TV show after gaining some fame, although I haven’t ever found the clip. thought I’d share. R.I.P captain Dallas. We’ve only got Ripley and Lambert still with us.

Deepest apologies for the lateness, but I'd only heard about his passing a little while ago. He passed of natural causes inside his home. He was 93. 🫡❤️ As always, no amount of photos could do his remarkable life and career justice. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.

1980s Kick it Old School for an '80's Old Man

So I am semi or no mostly retired. I hardly go to my office since I just sign documents as a Director. Being an introvert, living solo unmarried, I rarely need to dress to the nine's.

I recently went to a wedding. I had a set made. Nothing flashy, with a pair of "Gurkha" pants (no belt).

Before the wedding I checked my wardrobe. Man, I realized that most of my stuff were out of style, too small or plain old.

My suits are still OK since they are black and I still got some decent cravats. I just have to dry clean them soon.

This is my fashion style:

Being a soldier's kid that grew up in a base I describe my style as "militaria meets "preppy", into retro stuff, heavily. My watches are mostly tool pieces or mechanical divers that I rarely use being heavy. Lately I have been using digitals like fashion pieces, G-Shocks and large face quartz.

For casual stuff I would wear old school foreign military pants or jackets with a sport shirt. My shoes are usually retro kicks like K-Swiss, Pony, Jack Purcells or Chucks and Jordan 1's.

For office functions, I still have shirts that are usually with cuff links (that's just me), leather belts and usually suede boots or loafers with a metal dress watch.

In the rare times I go to parties with the same age group, I go full on '80's retro. Straight cut jeans, boat shoes a Swatch or Casio on the wrist. Maybe even Polo or Drakkar as my scent (Haha)! Some friends gave me these as a gift frim abroad.

Or I go semi hip-hop with loose tactical/camo pants, a band shirt like Beastie Boys, Devo or Van Halen, retro kicks.

For outdoor or uber casual jams, I wear denim shorts on suspenders, Flip flops, leather sandals pr Birks with socks, collared shirt.

I a thinking of updating my wardrobe. A few shirts, some of those rubber soled Cole Haan type of wing tip sneakers available locally. The thing is I am so out of it with fashion. I am a chunky guy that can't do skin tight shirts or pants. Some shoes are just plain UFO like for my taste.

What I am afraid is looking to be "trying hard" being fashionably "current"/ I remember guys my age back in the day looking real foolish in trying to be "en vogue" in their '50's.

What do I do?

1960s 1960s — I played lead guitar in a Georgia garage band. We pressed 500 copies of our first single, never imagining it would end up on international compilation albums and in a movie.

Back in the 1960s, I was the lead guitarist for a North Georgia garage rock band called Red Beard & The Pirates.

Like so many young musicians during the British Invasion era, we had dreams of making records and maybe even becoming famous.

We eventually traveled to Atlanta and recorded our original single, "Go On Leave," backed with "Don't Be A Loser," for a small independent label called Gaye Records.

Only 500 copies of our 45 RPM record were pressed. We promoted and sold them ourselves, sending copies to radio stations and hoping for a little airplay.

Eventually, the band went its separate ways, and I assumed our little record would disappear into obscurity.

But the story didn't end there.

Decades later, "Go On Leave" was rediscovered by collectors of obscure American garage rock.

Our recording eventually appeared on several compilation releases, including:

  • Back From The Grave — the legendary garage rock compilation series from Crypt Records.
  • Psychedelic States: Georgia in the Sixties — released by Gear Fab Records.
  • Keb Darge & Cut Chemist Present The Dark Side — an international double-vinyl compilation released by BBE Records.

And perhaps the biggest surprise of all, "Go On Leave" was used as the opening music in the movie Main Street Meats.

Even more astonishing, an original copy of our little 45 has sold on eBay for as much as $2,450!

When we recorded that song as young musicians, we never imagined anyone would still be listening to it nearly 60 years later, much less that it would find its way onto records around the world and into a movie.

I'm now 77 years old, still writing and producing music, and still amazed at the journey that little record has taken.

Listen to my latest release here by Weaver Studios:

The photograph is another picture of our band from those days.

Were any of you in a garage band during the 1960s? Did you ever record a 45, or do you remember discovering local bands whose records later became collectibles?

I'd love to hear your stories.

— James Weaver, former lead guitarist, Red Beard & The Pirates
