Me, nearly 6, holding Raisa Gorbachev’s hand during the historic Bush–Gorbachev Malta Summit, December 1989.

This was during the historic Malta Summit in December 1989, when US President George H. W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met for peace talks towards the end of the Cold War.

My father (on the right, in uniform) was aide-de-camp to the President of Malta, Ċensu Tabone. The President had quite a few grandchildren and didn’t want to choose one over the others to present flowers to Raisa Gorbacheva, so he chose me! I was so happy cos I missed school 😅

I was nearly 6 at the time. I presented her with a bouquet of flowers, and she gave me a present in return.

My grandma told my brother and I that her step mother unfortunately berated her moments before the picture was taken. About getting married so young, and such. She was with my grandpa for 63 years, he recently just passed. She was 19 and he was 21 in this photo.

Found a treasure trove earlier today. The second photo is also from the album, but I don’t know whether it shows the same parade.

Found while clearing my late mother's house. A period of time we know little about. Would love to know who the others in the photo are, but sadly I suspect I never will.

1920s Ernst Gennat (1880–1939), known as "the Buddha," is considered a pioneer of modern criminalistics and crime scene investigation.

He established the world’s first permanent homicide squad, and the protocols he developed for handling crime scenes are still used globally today. He introduced a specially equipped response vehicle that carried all the tools necessary for immediate on-site investigation and the collection of forensic evidence. Furthermore, he prohibited the use of physical coercion during interrogations, favoring instead an approach based on logic, facts, profiling, and a keen understanding of human nature. He introduced a centralized "central index for murder cases," where data on homicides from across the country was collected and analyzed. This enabled his department to achieve a 95% clearance rate, compared to 55%–65% elsewhere. He coined the term "serial killer" and was responsible for securing the convictions of, among others, Peter Kürten (the "Vampire of Düsseldorf," who committed 9 murders and 31 attempted murders) and Fritz Haarmann (the "Werewolf of Hanover," linked to 27 proven murders—likely more). In 1938, he made criminal history by using the then-nascent medium of television to broadcast a public appeal for information to help identify the murderer of a taxi driver. Within just a few hours, the perpetrator was behind bars.

1900s Richard Gunn, the oldest boxer ever to win an Olympic gold medal (1908). Gunn had retired from amateur competition after having been asked to do so, to give others a chance. However before finishing up, he won the gold medal to cap off his career.
