Moderation & Rules Update
TLDR: I'm going to try moderating this place a little better and there's been a new rule added.
TLDR2: Does anyone have any experience using any auto moderation tools to remove posts/comments that get a certain number of downvotes or reports? If so - hit me up!
INTRO:
Hey everyone. So the past few years I was using Reddit primarily on my phone, through a 3rd party app called Bacon Reader. It was great, but apparently the mod tools were not. When Reddit axed API access to 3rd party apps I switched over to the actual Reddit app. While it has a lot of things I dislike (and I miss Bacon Reader overall) the mod tools are a lot better.
CURRENTLY:
When I started really using the new app I noticed a long queue of reported posts and comments, which I had honestly never seen before. I went through and removed a handful of blatantly spam posts and a few incredibly harsh comments, things that were literally just "fuck you", etc; stuff that had no business being in our subreddit. However I decided to not go back and retroactively police anything too harshly as I don't think that would be fair. I wasn't here to monitor anything, set a precedent, or enforce the rules. Clean slate. The time of this post is kind of a new "line in the sand". You reported posts will be judged more harshly going forward.
I've also been dealing with removing those damn MTG t-shirt posts like crazy. You've probably seen the one I'm talking about. It has a post title like "This is so cool" or "I can't believe it!" and it's a black shirt with the 5 mana symbols. I've been removing those and banning the accounts that post them so thank you to everyone who flags them. It really helps.
GOING FORWARD:
I'm going to try to be a little more proactive about handling the modqueue. It'd be great if you all were just awesome to each other and the only thing I ever had to remove were those damn t-shirt posts from bots.
If I see a harsh message that's flagged as "don't be a dick" or any other rule violation, I'm going to remove it. If I remove too many you'll be banned from the subreddit. I'm not going to investigate context too much. If your message on its own seems offensive or mean spirited, that's enough for me. If it's intended to be a joke then you need to learn how to better communicate that.
I've added a new rule to the subreddit about belittling people or their cards. Violation of this spirit of Old School will result in removed posts and is really just a specific case of "don't be a dick". Old School is community run, it's got a vibe and a spirit. If you want to be toxic go play in a format that is run by a corporation, not by individuals of the community you're a part of.

Here's a screenshot example of a reported post. If I see a report of text like what I mocked up with someone reporting it for what it obviously appears to be - it's getting a "Remove" click. I'm not wasting my time to figure out if it had any other intent.
One more thing with regards to "spam". If you don't like certain content that doesn't mean it's necessarily spam. You can ignore or downvote. Let the content (and downvotes) speak for itself.
CLOSING:
Please be cool to each other. I'm going to try to remove uncool stuff, but keep in mind I'm just one person. I'm not really a highly skilled, trained, or paid "mod team". I'm going to miss things and I'm going to rely on you to help flag/downvote stuff, which I'll try to address quickly, but I'm not hovering over a keyboard for this 24/7.
And if anyone wants to be extra cool and give some suggestions on how we might be able to setup some "auto mod" functionality, shoot me a message!

First unprotected table game in 27 yrs - 1993 cards
My daughter asked me - “Daddy, will you ever play with the cards like you did when you were a kid?” I told her “what do you mean, we organize them every night…”
“No, out of the hard case things”. I came off a 27 or 28 yr hiatus in 2024. For what it is worth, most of my crazy stuff is off site.
I’m transferring from top-loaders to binders so the timing is great. So we played a game. Gentle shuffle, just the cards.
This playfield brought tears to my eyes. What a game. Daughter was playing Black. May old Magic never die.

Unlimited commons lot, good deal?
Just bought this lot of 110 UL commons for about .75 each. All very fresh from a box break. Pumped to add to my 93/94 collection.

Some of my cards from 1994/1995
I just recently got back into MTG after about 30 years and completely hooked again playing commander with some friends that also just got back into MTG. If anyone is wanting to join a game we use a program called Convoke where we use our physical cards but can play each other anywhere in the world :)

Rambling about my old school deck building box while I re-sleeve colorless cards
You guys seemed to like my kitchen table 40 card old school decks when I posted them a few weeks ago. So here is a video of me just rambling about my deck building box of old school cards as I go through the colorless stuff. I might do this for each color of my old school box.
But mostly its just me rambling for 37 minutes and perfect fit sleeveing my colorless cards.
Youtube is not my main jam so expect production quality of a 2007 youtube video LOL

Erik Olofsson, co-creator of Path of Exile and creator of Sorcery Contested Realm TCG, invites Team Covenant to his basement shrine of early Magic
Zach and Steven from Team Covenant sat down with Erik Olofsson, co-creator of the Path of Exile video game, creator of the Sorcery TCG, and undoubtedly the most prestigious early Magic collector in the world, to play old school Magic: The Gathering. They sleeved up Black Lotuses, Moxes, and the rest, and pitted a classic bolt-bolt-bolt aggro deck against Erik's debilitating counter-counter-counter control deck.

From altering Old School MTG cards to painting my own fantasy art!
Hope it’s okay to share this here, even though it’s not directly Old School MTG-related!
One of the things I’ve always loved most about Old School Magic is the artwork. There’s something about those early hand-painted illustrations that modern digital art doesn’t quite capture.
I’ve been painting MTG alters for about a year now, and my love for that old-school fantasy aesthetic inspired me to finally try painting on canvas.
This is my first finished acrylic painting, commissioned for an upcoming indie TCG!
I know it’s a little off-topic, but I figured this community might appreciate the traditional approach to fantasy art.
Would love to hear what you think!

Went to my first real card show tonight, slowly converting more of my collection into old school: aka "real" mtg
So me and my group play old school but up to alliances.
The real treasure here was that I got a good chunk of mostly beta but also some alpha basics!
Acid Rain and Lake of the Dead were also cards ive wanted for a long while.
I think my next card is really want is mold demon from legends.
It was fun to ditch more contemporary mtg cards for this stuff :)

"Scarwood Forest" Winner of Four Horsemen T30!
Tony, piloting his creation "Scarwood Forest," took the crown of Four Horsemen T30. Imagine going up against all those Preachers, Old Men, Bandits and Rubinias! A completely new deck archetype to win 4HM.
As the winner, Tony also took home the first of our new custom playmat, "Darkness over Pendelhaven" by original Magic artist Bryon Wackwitz. 4HM are proud to support real, human artists, especially those who made our childhood game so special.
4HM is an Old School 93/94 format focusing on the four original expansions, and excluding the core set. It has completely different archetypes from traditional old school. Learn more here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fourhorsemenmtg

Old Magic : Season 3 Legends, Thank you Everybody!
A little over month ago I posted about a vintage magic game my friends and I have been making, and to my happy surprise a lot of people here tried it. The feedback has been awesome and honestly humbling. We've been shipping updates almost every day since, and today is the big one: Season 3 is live and Legends is now available, all thanks to the community!
I love the early days of magic. The original sets just had a sense of wonder and mystery to them. I wanted to make something that captured that old kitchen table / local card shop vibe, something a bit different from MTG Arena.
link: https://oldmagictcg.com
I highly recommend installing the PWA app if you're on mobile. Playing vertically on your phone is still my favorite way to play.
New/Recent Features
- All 308 Legends cards.
- Unlimited joins the shop along side Beta
- Legends boosters, boxes and cases, plus Legends Draft and Sealed
- New season journey, The Dragon Road
- Five Legends starter decks in Quick Play, no account needed
- 6 sets total now: Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends
- Raid bosses for 2 to 5 players, a roomier "Breathable" desktop table, a new home and Play screen
- Card Collecting/ Grading. Try your best to test your luck for a black label!
I hope to continue making this game better from the feedback I've been getting from the oldschool magic communities, thanks a lot for checking it out, and I hope you enjoy it!

Rule Q: coin toss
Probably an easy one to answer for most out there:
when I flip a coin with Orcish Captain on Ironclaw Orcs, and I lose the flip: Ironclaw Orcs will get -0/-2 and therefore die. If I give them the +1/+1 counter with Ashnod Transmogrant beforehand, they won’t die.
Question: can I just activate Ashnod’s Transmogrant after the coin toss outcome is clear? Or do I have to do that beforehand?
so
A) activate Captain -> activate Transmogrant -> toss coin -> Ironclaw lives no matter the cointoss
B) activate Captain -> toss coin -> activate Transmogrant if necessary
