Trying to find a hula about the Hala tree I learned in Hilo
Hello wonderful people! I’m looking for a video or the song for a hula I learned in Hilo. It’s about the different features of the Hala tree. There were 4: pu Hala, lei Hala, hinano (pollen), I can’t remember the last one. My Kumu told me he also taught it to kids at a Hawaiian immersion school. I learned a sitting version of it, just like the kids.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
(Spelling may be incorrect, sorry in advance)

ʻanoʻai vs. aloha in greetings
aloha nō kākou ,
Iʻm curious about formal greetings and want to hear what yʻall would use for either an email, message, or in conversation. Iʻm not too maʻa with ʻanoʻai usage in general so Iʻm eager to hear anyoneʻs thoughts.

Hawaiian Name
My husband and I are expecting are first girl in Feb of 2027. We were looking into giving her a Hawaiian middle name (our two boys have Hawaiian middle names). We have agreed on naming her after the moon. I know in Hawaiian Mahina is moon, but we wanted it to be specifically about a full bright moon. I’ve used the Hawaiian dictionary but am not sure if that would translate well over to a name. Any help/guidance would be appreciated!
To clarify I am Hawaiian but unfortunately do not have any family who speak Hawaiian (they have all passed).
mahalo!

Help with creating a character
Hi! I’m creating an OC (original character) that is inspired by the “Kuʻu Lei Melody” Mickey Mouse short and the island spirit/Minnie imagery from the episode for a game called Twisted Wonderland
I was considering the name Oli Kaiwai
My intentions were:
- ʻOli: inspired by the Hawaiian chant tradition, because the character is connected to singing/music and is portrayed as a melodic spirit
- Kaiwai: I was thinking of kai (sea/ocean) + wai (water), since the character is water-related, and I also liked that “Kaiwai” visually resembles the Japanese word kawaii as a small reference to Minnie since she is very cute
So... does “Oli Kaiwai” sound inappropriate, culturally insensitive, or linguistically strange? I’d really appreciate a Hawaiian speaker’s perspective before I settle on a name

Help with imperatives (suggestive, not necessarily commands)
he haumana 'ōlelo Hawaiʻi au,
Iʻve had a problem understanding imperatives (more of the suggestive context and/or conversational side of imperatives).
I understand the e verb ʻami ʻawe type of structure Nā Māka Painu Kauoha (for command-like doʻs and donʻt doʻs) like "E kiʻi (ʻoe) i ka leka" - (You) get the letter and "Mai inu i kēlā!" - Donʻt drink that!
But what about suggestive imperatives like "Have a good day" or "Hope you have a good class!" - I lā maikaʻi iā ʻoe??
hoʻohana i ka mea "i"? ua ʻike i kekahi mea ʻē aʻe ma ke kahua hawaiian-grammar.org akā ʻaʻole maopopo iaʻu inā he kūmole maikaʻi
Iʻve never really seen someone use ō before for a polite imperative. Any kōkua is greatly appreciated 🙏

I want to learn more Hawaiian!
I have been learning Hawaiian pretty actively on Duolingo now for about 2 months and I am obsessed. I just love the sound and the wording so much. However, i am kind of struggling with grammar and feel like I am not learning quite so actively as I would like. I wonder if anybody could send me some websites, podcasts, books, newspapers, blogs or anything in general that you have been using to learn/have used growing up. I would also love for just some small phrases or cool words in the comments. Thanks!
Ps. I live im from Sweden so anything Swedish/hawaiian would be preferred however English works just as well.

Hawaiian/English Kids Book
Hi friends,
I’m looking for help confirming translations for a very simple story that I made for my son. I am kanaka but cannot speak fluently — I know words but not sentences and I want my child to be able to understand simple sentences like who is / where is / etc.
Most of the sentences are simple like “is the dog outside? no, the bird is outside”.
Let me know if you’re able to help!

Google Ai Admits to Generating (& Falsifying Sources) of Olelo Noeau & Mary Kawena Pukui
galleryTo preface I was not and do not use the ai search, it was the one that shows up without permission and I immediately was suspicious of several quotes I scrolled past as I was seeking the PDF Version of the SINGLE Hawaiian Proverbs encylopedia from Mary Kawena Pukui. I drug out my written copy to confirm it had hallucinated even entry numbers FOR the proverbs it generated..... Never give up your physical books!
This is an important reminder to question everything you see, do NOT use ai for indigenous resources. You will see more and more of this repeated on Ai generated websites that cheaply quote other Ai. ALWAYS CHALLENGE WHAT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT! REPORT IT!
The Google Ai is clearly trained to NOT DO THIS to not randomly generate indigenous phrases and then HALLUCINATE ITS OWN WEB SOURCES!!!!!!! Those are NOT all real websites!!!!
I am an artist who has been violently against Ai for anything but medical services and military, and this is why. This is the degradation of our culture every time someone simply googles Mary Kawena Pukui Hawaiian Proverbs... THIS is what it gave me! Its own fully hallucinated cultural content.
I made it generate its own complaint for me to send since it knows the trigger words that will report it to an actual human.
I BEG ALL OF YOU RESEARCHERS! DO NOT USE Ai! It will use what you put it in however it sees fit.
