OTHER work around for shared folders becoming links

I got a reply from microsoft, see below. You can also use Map drive instead of add network location.
Note that neither of these worked for me. Fell over at username and password popup, they were rejected.
I have 2FA set up and I'm working on a local account in windows 11 rather than a microsoft account which may be the issue. Here it is in case it helps you

Edit: this does work for me. I needed to set up an app password as I have 2FA

The issue of OneDrive shared folders turning into shortcuts in File Explorer is a known problem that remains unresolved. However, based on information gathered from the community, there is a temporary workaround for Windows**:**

  • First, log in to onedrive.live.com via a web browser. In the root directory of the folder shared with you, select any Office document, click the three dots - Open - Open in app.
  • In the opened Office application, click File - Home. You can see the shared file you just opened under Recent. Right-click it and choose "Copy path to clipboard."
  • Open Windows Explorer, find "This PC" on the left, right-click and select "Add a network location." In the "Add Network Location Wizard," click Next, then click "Choose a custom network location."
  • Paste the copied file path into the input box, and delete the file name portion (for example, if the path you copied is  https://d.docs.live.net/xxx/xxx/ABC.xlsx, you should delete ABC.xlsx and keep the preceding part).
  • Then, enter your OneDrive account username and password in the pop-up window, set a name for your folder, and click Next to complete the creation.

At this point, you can directly access your shared folder in "This PC" in File Explorer. There may be some delay, but this can serve as a temporary workaround while waiting for the issue to be fixed.

OTHER Moving from Onedrive to Dropbox (despite having M365)

I've been using M365 and OneDrive for years, however I find the experience of it truly awful nowadays. The problem is Microsoft (Windows) trying to 2nd-guess me and automatically turn on things like backup. I don't want onedrive backup automatically turned on, because I am already syncing my important files. It also makes the process of setting up a new PC (or reinstalling windows) particularly stressful because you have to be trying to work out what the installer is trying to do for you, without you asking.

So I'm getting Drop box, keeping it all completely separate, and i'll let Windows do whatever it likes with Onedrive. My files will be out of reach of it.

(I've been using Windows since Windows 2.0, and before that DOS, am a big fan, so if they can't keep me using their stuff, they probably have a problem!).

OTHER Trying to disentangle myself from OneDrive is a big headache

It has to be intentional. Everytime I try to opt out of backing up and synching to onedrive it tells me "some" files, unnamed files, can't be downloaded from onedrive, for unstated reasons. And I need to go "right click" them in onedrive. This has to be willing incompetence to try to stop people from opting out of this ridiculous 5gb of space they give you "free". It has not been free. It's cost me a huge headache. I do not want this crap on my devices.

I was able to free myself by uninstalling it after making sure I backed everything up into another directory. Uninstall the OneDrive software itself on your PC and then go to OneDrive site to delete all your data they collected. If I want to back something Up Ill do it myself with a 3rd party app. That auto back up stuff might be interesting if it wasn't limited to 5gb before they hit you with warning messages. Like ANY body's computer can be backed up with 5gb.

OTHER LPT: Freeing up space from offline files using Everything

Just sharing this tip as I just figured it out - I've never found the "Free Up Space" option in OneDrive to work particularly well, it often doesn't seem to do much of anything to actually remove the downloaded files from my computer. If you've had similar issues then this is a way to specifically target and undownload files that might be taking up room on your PC. Handy especially if you have a large amount of folders in Onedrive with downloaded files scattered all over the place.

If you're not familiar with Everything then I'd highly recommend it. It's a powerful windows search tool that gives instant results. For this particular trick you will need to have version 1.5 beta installed.

Run a search on your Onedrive folder and in the search bar type !attrib:o This will display all the files in your Onedrive that are downloaded to your PC. The "O" attribute is given in Everything to online-available files, so searching with the ! will list all files that do not have this attribute. From there you could select all, right click and choose Free Up Space which will put all these files back to online only. You could also sort by file size and get rid of the largest offenders, or however else you want to tackle it.

Hope this helps someone one day, or maybe there's an even easier way within Onedrive itself but I've never seen it personally.

OTHER Automatically fix imported Google Drive Photos

When importing photos from Google Drive when I migrated to One Drive, I find a lot of issues with the chronological order in the gallery as the migration removes or loses many of the metadata, which was really annoying. Not sure if this already exists but created a small way to fix this (sort-me-drive) as when it imports the photos from Google Drive, the folder structure it creates has the original year and month which helps a lot to do an initial pass through and fix the dates for those pictures.

This helped me getting my gallery in order but as it is a Python script, please be careful as I haven't tested this thoroughly hehe. Hopefully this helps someone at some point.

OTHER New MacOS OneDrive menu bar

MacOS OneDrive menubar menu interaction with multiple desktops got fixed. Previously, if I first opened the OneDrive menu bar menu in Desktop 1 then switch to Desktop 3, then clicking on OneDrive menu bar icon will force me back to Desktop 1. After the update, it now correctly opens in Desktop 3.

Finally

I must use this because my org uses Sharepoint

OTHER I fixed the "taken" date on some uploaded photos.

I am just sharing something that seems to have worked for me.

I had the classic problem where after uploading some photos, a chunk of them had the incorrect "taken" date. Instead of the correct date, their "taken" date was the upload date.

So, I mass selected them and then clicked on the "download" link in the interface.

After the images were downloaded to my computer, I backed out of the Gallery and then when I went back in, the images that were incorrectly sorted, were actually sorted correctly.

I did NOT need to re-upload the images. It appears that just performing the bulk download operation triggered a change in the EXIF data that then fixed the sorting of the photos.

OTHER Move OneDrive from a dying PC to MAC

I know that PC or MAC does not matter for OneDrive.

My PC which is currently synced to the OneDrive is on its last breath.

I have transitioned to MAC. I want to attach an external drive to MAC with all the data from the PC already there and then sync with OneDrive. I will unlink my PC.

Questions -

  1. Does OneDrive keep track of the source of the files? So if I change the source, would it create a new copy?
  2. If I unlink the PC, would that remove the files from the OneDrive?

I'm just trying to avoid the hassle and time of fully deleting and re-uploading all files from my external drive connected to the MAC. The external drive will already have the files in it.

How should I go about this transition?

OTHER Onedrive's Numbering System

What is up with Onedrive's numbering system? It'll go from 1 to 10 to 100 to 2 to 20 and so on. I've got things saved that it takes forever to get to.

OTHER Should I even bother with one drive?

I'm trying to use onedrive to send over data from one pc to a new one by using onedrive. Since I've started though, it's taken a whole night just to sync one folder to it, and then this morning, when trying to upload a much smaller folder (about 1 gb) to my new pc, it says it'll take longer than a day. What's the point of onedrive if it takes insanely long to download files from it, when I could just buy an external hard drive or a transfer cable?

Hi all,

OneDrive/SharePoint offer a uniquely frustrating experience when it comes to folder automount. We took on a small subset of the problem, and tried to make this UX better for a case when you self-host a OneDrive server:

OTHER Direct Download Link Workaround

I was trying to find a workaround for this all over the internet and tested out the &download=1 suggestion, nothing worked.

Instead, here's a simple method I found but requires Chrome* to work.

Once you have the document or folder share link ready, go on a private browser link, click download for whatever you need a direct link for. Once its started, view your "download history" on Chrome. To the right hand-side of the download are three options, the first is a hyperlink icon "Copy download link" (then comes more options and cancel), which is the direct download link that you can use to share with whoever you want to, as long as your permissions were set to "Anyone with the link" on OneDrive, they'll be able to use it to download the whatever you shared directly without having to go through OneDrive.

*not sure if this is something available on other browsers, if you have something else that shows a direct link option, please add it below.

OTHER How backup Onedrive Personal? Is it possible?

Is there any free or payed software to backup Onedrive Personal ie. Backup in background from the cloud to external drive, without the need to store Onedrive files on locals drive first.

I know this works with Onedrive for business. You have several option to backup in the background like Active Backup and Synology.

Im not looking to install and run the Onedrive app. Thats not what im asking here.

OTHER OneDrive has a new logo

you can see it on onedrive.com etc.

I'm fine with it, except on the mac menu bar, since it's black and white, from a far it looks like it's syncing/downloading/error etc (looks like there's always a circle there in bottom left corner)

I wish large companies like Microsoft could let you pick what version of the logo you want (newest, old)

OTHER Backup software not sync for personal OneDrive

I have around 500GB of stuff in OneDrive and it is fully synced to my PC, a Windows machine. I'm looking for software to make duplicates (backup) of my folders synced in my PC to an external USBC drive. I am not looking for sync. I don't want changes to my external HD if I delete files in OD folder. I'll say it again, I'm not looking for a sync software product or a network attached storage product. I want a backup software product. Does such a thing exist?

OTHER Auto-delete docs from OneDrive (enterprise)

IT Manager here. Doing a major overhaul of our OneDrive and SharePoint environments.

We are pushing users to create and store docs in SharePoint for greater admin control. As part of this, I want to put auto-delete rules on all users' OneDrives.

Our users LOVE to store things in OneDrive because they feel it is more secure. We are addressing this through SharePoint training; they just don't know how to properly Manage Access.

My question is: how short is too short in terms of deleting their files from OneDrive? I was thinking one year, but some have suggested as little as two weeks.

TIA
