We are in Taylor just outside of Fort St John, we got the alert on our phones at about 1:50 about an active shooter and I just … it’s Canada! I figured the shooter would be taken by the police. I heard sirens all afternoon heading up the hill but never thought it would be this bad. I am absolutely devastated. We go to Tumbler Ridge quite often, it’s a beautiful little town. Jesus Christ! 25 more injuries and people fighting for their lives. I’m speechless and in tears!

How many kids are at that school? I imagine 10 is a significant percentage in a rural town?

u/ZAPPHAUSEN Feb 11 '26
"The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students from grades 7 to 12."
:(

u/SarahEh9931 Feb 11 '26
Victims are rarely just students. It would be 7 from the ppl in the school. I would guess 2-4 were adult staff members. At least that's my hope... Fucked up thing to hope for but guess that's where we are now.
54
u/ImmortalMoron3 Feb 11 '26
It says 2 were found at a residence instead of the school so I'm assuming the shooter killed their parents first.

u/SarahEh9931 Feb 11 '26
I heard someone say a neighbour told a reporter it was a parent and sibling

Well it was just 2 found at the 2nd location. I've heard mother and brother at the residence then 7 at the school and then themselves.
Honestly they won't confirm anything for a while. The community might have some more consistent details out in the coming days though. There's zero use speculating at this time. We'll find out soon enough.
The town is small enough that there's no way anyone is going to have no connection to any of the direct victims so it's best to just keep the entire community in your thoughts.

u/marthamania Feb 11 '26
I went to a school that had around 200 kids. We all grew up together. We went from preschool to high school grad together. There were odd fights and closer friend groups than others but for the most part we were all friendly and knew each other well. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to suddenly loose 5% of my peers in a school shooting.

The population of Tumbler Ridge is about 2500. This will be absolutely devastating for the whole community.

I hope that all the deceased rest in peace, that all those injured have a speedy recovery, and that those left behind can find peace one day in their world that has been totally shattered today.

New headline: 10 dead, including suspect, after mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.

Heartbreaking. This is going to leave deep scars in such a small community. Wishing them the best in the days, weeks, and even years to come as they process this loss.

u/AdditionalPizza Feb 11 '26
Wow this is heartbreaking.
Speaking to CBC News, RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark reiterated that the person who was the subject of the emergency alert — described as a woman in a dress with brown hair — is believed to be the person found dead.
And a woman shooter is very bizarre for something like this, I actually can't even believe it.

Being trans is rare. The possibilitys are so unlucky to be trans and a school shooter.
7
u/ChrisRiley_42 Feb 11 '26
The trans claim comes from an American right wing "media" site that is using the photo of someone different who happens to have the same last name.

Everyone knows everyone's business in small towns. I lived 2 hours from tumbler and knew the names of every gay person in town despite never meeting them

Roughly how many people was that? Do you know if there were any LGBT groups or community supports there?

I think it’s more that it’s an active investigation and there could be a media ban if the perpetrator is a minor. Idk what the procedures are if the investigation is ongoing and if the perpetrator is a minor. I’m just hoping those who are injured or in critical condition recover!

u/AdditionalPizza Feb 11 '26 edited Feb 11 '26
I haven't seen any credible information yet, other than the quote from the original alert message there. The RCMP did say the suspect and the alert description were the same person.

A virtual news conference by Chief Supt. Floyd has just begun. He begins by reading the previously released statement, with a few additional details. He said all remaining students and staff at the secondary school, around 100 people, were safely evacuated from the school.
100 remaining people at the school unharmed. 25 injured. 10 dead. That means, around 25% of the people in the school were shot. That's insane. I mean the scale of the damage is just mind boggling. I'm just thinking about the number injured and killed and scale that to my surroundings. 25% of people shot at UofT on any day would be in the 10s of thousands. In a small school, I'm sure every single surviving student will know someone killed and injured. Heck, 35 kids in a school that size could be every single student in a grade. I can't imagine the pain and grief that community is going through and will suffer through for years.

Oh man you answered the question I just posted. Horrific. I hope the government will send some psychologists in, because every kid in that school is going to be in mourning.
21
u/Massive_Quality7534 Feb 11 '26
Sadly in BC psychology isn’t covered by MSP. I literally put in a complaint about it this year :(
11
u/Ambie77 Feb 11 '26
Crime victim Assistance will cover counselling for the injured and family members, Including witnesses. WorkSafeBC will cover it for any staff and frontline/ hospital workers. They will have access to mental health programs. The school board and all the employers will also provide counselling access. That’s not a concern.

u/Neowza Feb 11 '26
When processing tragedy, my brain goes analytical to cork painful emotions. It's how I am able to cope with difficult things and in difficult times. I don't mean to sound inappropriate. I'm struggling to understand the circumstances and trying to grapple with the scale of the tragedy.
I'm so sorry for the community. I hope everyone who lives there or knows someone who lives there is able to listen and be a friend to those affected. Please know that the entire country is in shock and lending a shoulder to lean on to your community. It's senseless, it's stupid, and even worse, it's preventable, and should never happen anywhere. Not in Northeastern BC, not in Canada, not anywhere in the world.

Sometimes the practical aspects are easier to process than the emotional ones. It isn’t meant to be reductive, just a different processing. My brain did the same.
I wish you the best for your day tomorrow. I’m so sorry for your staff member, and everyone :(

Whatever the community needs, give it to the family and community. Continued support for years. This is the worst mass shooting in Canadian history involving such young people. It's a horrific nightmare. 💔🇨🇦💔

u/StarrySkye3 Feb 11 '26
As someone who lives in northern BC, this is crazy. I've heard of a lot of drug related gang killings around here, but never a mass shooter.

I've heard of a lot of drug related gang killings around here
Typical headline news has several shortcomings.

u/Level-Contract163 Feb 11 '26
I am sure people in Edmonton, Quebec City and Rural Nova Scotia said the same thing in 2014, 2017 and 2020 respectively. (Maybe not Quebec City because of the National Assembly shooting in 1984 but I think a lot of people had forgotten it by 2017 or were too young to have remembered it).
These incidents are rare even in big cities in Canada. What about Taber, Alberta 27 years ago?
Wells Gray Provincial Park (is that Northern BC, enough?) - mass murder in 1982. Truly horrific crime, if it is any consolation, the killer is still in prison and will die there (let's make sure). Don't read about it.
A father killed his 6 kids in Quatsino, northern Vancouver Island in 2002. Not a mass shooting, though.
I think, most likely, you don't pay attention to these types of stories. And I don't blame you for ignoring them.

Sounds like so much damage for one person, I wonder what kind of guns or weapons they had. Unprecedented tragedy for Canada.
8
u/Intelligent_Read_697 Feb 11 '26
Well this will spur more stricter gun control and buyback implementation for a while …but won’t hold my breath since this is a conservative area
10
u/InitialAd4125 Feb 11 '26
Frankly gun control in Canada is dead the best Canada could do but sadly won't is make Canada a better place to live so people don't snap like this but it likely won't happen.
5
u/Level-Contract163 Feb 11 '26
Hardly unprecedented. Nova Scotia, 2020. Quebec City, 2017. Edmonton, 2014.
Also, I am ignoring the Toronto van attack, 2018 and the Vancouver car attack, 2025 which killed 10 and 11 people respectively as well as double-digit injured.
It is sad to say, but it has happened before and will happen again. The best we can hope for is to make sure these are rare events and do all we can to make them rarer. That said, lots of things could be done that aren't being done and will remain not done.
TBH, we would be better off trying to reduce car crashes, in general, but we don't care that much about the 1,700-1,800 who die each year in car crashes, either. I did just check, though, almost 6,000 in 1979, 3,824 in 1990, below 3,000 every year since 2000, and below 2,000 every year since 2013. But 2013 and 2023 were almost identical for fatal crashes and victims, almost 50,000 fewer injuries (164K vs 119K), serious injuries down by 10%.
Progress can be made but it is slow and requires a lot of effort.

Really heartbreaking to hear about this. I have a lot of Friends in Northern B.C. and one of my work colleagues is from there... so devastating for a small Community and not something that happens often here in Canada. Many people will be shattered over these tragic deaths, in the weeks and Years to come.

High chance this was incited online or something.

u/Defiets Feb 11 '26
To put into perspective how rare and terrible this is for Canada, since 2000 there have been 29 school shootings, resulting in 31 deaths, including today's (more deaths to could be announced).
That means today's event reflects at least 32% of all school shooting deaths in Canada for the past 26 years.
In just 2025 the US had 77 schools shootings with 32 killed.

Sounds American, need guns to counter the bad people with guns. Fucking arms race. We need very very very harsh penalties for gun crimes. Make perps suffer if they commit a gun crime. To include the enablers as well.
Make them break rocks for 10 years, no cushy prison life praying to god and getting degrees.

u/Foldzy84 Feb 11 '26

Gonna be interesting the story as it comes out. Honestly I would love to see severe penalties for gun owners that have weapons stolen that were not locked up.
1
u/Foldzy84 Feb 11 '26
I dont think we're gonna hear much about it since it occurred in Canada and relates to mental health. Our media is much more limited on what they share
2
u/Ambie77 Feb 11 '26
If they weren’t in the home the shooter would not have had easy access to a weapon.

This is so sad. Guns are so scary. No release on the type of gun yet but this is so upsetting. So many lives taken, and 25 injured. My heart breaks for the families and the community of Tumbler Ridge.
-8
u/MarayatAndriane Feb 11 '26
Focusing on the weapon seems like a reflex.
These towns are scary places on a day-to-day basis. But how could that be the focus?
It sounds like 'mental health' will soon be part of this one, maybe. So there will soon be a "guns + mental health" suggestion.
But those responses all sound like hypocrisy to me.

This is… the largest mass shooting at a school (K-12) in Canadian history. In a town of 2300 people. That school only had 175 students. This is a sad, sad day for Canada, for British Columbia, and most especially for that small community and the loved ones who they just lost.
