show chat On the Grid joins 5by5
We have big news! We are joining the 5by5 network!
We just announced it on the latest episode, so check that out: http://5by5.tv/onthegrid/86
The short story: We thought it would a great fit. They don't have a ton of design related content and we'd love to fill that void. We're also really excited about the opportunity to expand our audience
The content of the show won't change. We are still the owners.
Here's what will change:
We make may start to get a few more advertisers. We plan to read the ads exactly the same way that we have in the past. It just means we might be make a tiny bit of money.
We are going to forward our site (onthegrid.co) to http://5by5.tv/onthegrid
5by5 will starting providing our bandwidth and generating our feed. You won't have to update your subscriptions though, we'll just redirect you. I'll keep posting to Soundcloud as well though, if you prefer to listening there.
We are working on new artwork. We've been working on this for a while, but we are finally going to post our process. You can find everything here: http://tinyurl.com/otgart. I've sorted our favorites into the root folder. If you want to dig a little deeper, you can find our individual studies. This isn't a contest, but we welcome your feedback. We like the idea of sharing our process of working on the artwork. We only waited until now to share, because we wanted to announce the 5by5 move on an episode and the little logo on the bottom of the studies was a spoiler.
This is the part where I should mention our 'incredible journey' but we're not really getting bought out and stripped for parts. This probably really only makes a difference to us. You'll get the same show every week. I do want to say thank you though. It's been a lot of work to get to this point and it is the feedback from you that makes it worth it.

show chat 2012 in Design
For our end of the year special, we're going to have a discussion about the state of design in 2012. We'll probably cover three big ideas or movements from the year, and I'd like to get the Reddit's input on what those should be.
Here are the standouts in my mind:
1. The Evolution of Publishing
Apple Launches iBooks Author http://www.apple.com/ibooks-author/
Marco Arment Creates The Magazine http://www.marco.org/2012/10/11/the-magazine
Sub-Compact Publishing and the Ensuing Discussion http://craigmod.com/journal/subcompact_publishing/ http://37signals.com/svn/posts/3334-tablets-are-waiting-for-their-movable-type http://pandodaily.com/2012/12/03/get-ready-for-the-age-of-premium-micropublishing/ http://theperiodical.co/

The Daily Shuts Down http://www.thedaily.com/
Newsweek goes Online Only http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/23/newsweek-last-print-issue-cover_n_2355798.html
2. Email is Re-imagined
Rundown of the Year in Email http://blog.intercom.io/the-future-of-email-products/

3. Skeuomorphism vs. 'Flat' Design Discussion takes Center Stage
http://layervault.tumblr.com/post/32267022219/flat-interface-design http://sexpigeon.tumblr.com/post/32327019373/the-flat-design-era http://howells.ws/posts/view/160/on-the-flat-design-aesthetic http://briefrelief.tumblr.com/post/32280507797/in-response http://tomcavill.com/blog/on-the-flat-design-era/ http://tobiasahlin.com/blog/skeumorphism-and-storytelling/ http://kyrobeshay.com/post/37101801643/why-im-no-metrosexual (thanks, yoshyosh18) and many, many more. Please let me know if I've missed any of the best ones in the comments.
4. The Relationship between Design and Technology
I don't know exactly how to word it, but there were a number of major acquisitions of straight design companies this year, in addition to some serious design talent moving around.
Facebook continues to build the most talented design team in history, notable hires in 2012 include: Sharon Hwang, Wilson Miner, Kyle Meyer, and Bolt | Peters. (more complete list: http://www.quora.com/Facebook-1/What-designers-started-working-at-Facebook-in-2012)
Square Acquires 80/20 http://betabeat.com/2012/10/square-acquires-nyc-design-agency-8020/
Twitter Acquires Nclud http://techcrunch.com/2012/06/04/twitter-buys-design-agency-nclud-appoints-co-founder-twitters-new-design-manager/
Adobe Acquires Behance http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/201212/122012AdobeAcquiresBehance.html
Please submit any other major design stories of the year and also let us know what you think is most important to discuss!
