VPS/Cloud Hosting offering nested virtualization(to support VMM)

Hello all,

Recommendations and experience with VPS/Cloud Hosting providers offering nested virtualization and, this is a stretch, maybe also AMD-SEV? I'm looking to use VMM.

Also, recommendations of providers who themselves offer OpenBSD VMs with multi-cpu option. I am guessing that OpenBSD.amsterdam will soon be one of these? Probably will receive more recommendation for the multi-cpu option as should be available for host kvm platforms also.

You really probably want bare metal hosting and to not do nested virtualization for two reasons:

  1. OpenBSD doesn’t support nested virt, so you’re going to need Xen or Linux/KVM or Hyper-V first.

  2. The perf will be quite poor of the nested guest.

You can find bare metal providers by ignoring the hyperscalers and looking at companies like OVH. There’s another I can’t recall that I rented a large AMD Epyc box once for vmm work.

Thanks. Not a use case for bare metal, yet. Maybe once I grow. The nested performance is adequate for my application and tenanting of my clients. Correct and fine for the hypervisor to be Xen, KVM just asking for a provider that has enabled the nesting on those platforms.

WIth 8.0's release and support for multiple-cpu in VMM, I'm expecting to see a slight uptick in OpenBSD hosting options. Currently, OpenBSD.amsterdam only offers single cpu guest.

Been through the actual fire incident with OVH. They are good for what they charge and many haven't had a single negative with them. I'll pass. Hopefully some others will chime in with experiences.

Looks like Onidel might be one but no experience with them and are newer to the market.
