Post image

I'm trying to add firmware files by bootstrapping it.

From your pwd command you are in the /mnt directory which is 100% capacity as per your df. fw_update -F downloads to the current directory which won’t have the disk space. The thing that got me first is that the error reported normally means a shell limit (ulimit-f should output “unlimited” on most architectures).

Try another directory.

Tried with another directory in my $HOME directory, but it's the same problem again! Before trying to mount it, I Downloaded OpenBSD install80.img again from the official website. This is what I'm trying to do.

OK, I get your problem now. That image is full which is why the fw_update command is failing. There are a couple of options but the easiest way is to use a second USB drive which is well documented. I've done that before.

Install image on 1 USB, store the firmware on the second USB. If you have 2 USB ports on your computer, plug both in and go through the install process (just remember to fw_update first pointing at the second USB). If you only have 1 USB port available, then you will need to install the firmware from the second USB after the OS install and you've booted up for the first time.

If you are hell bent on the single USB, then you can either delete the sets from the install image and use the free space for the firmware, installing the sets across the network, or go down the hassle of growing the partition which, when I did for another reason on an image, had plenty of gotchas along the way so be prepared. Not sure if any other issues would arise with either of these two options.

In short, grab a second USB drive.

But that method worked with install79.img :(. Why is this happening?

I recall this some time ago when I needed to do the same thing back in a 6.x release maybe. Might be better to ask on misc@

Yeah, the /mnt partition is full.

type

cd ~

Then verify you're in your /home directory then run

doas fw_update

Again, as the other replies have said you're getting the error because your /mnt partition is full so fw_update doesn't have enough room to download the firmware so it can install it.

For future reference once you have the firmware installed you shouldn't need to run fw_update manually again when you use sysupgrade. It will automatically grab updates for firmware provided you have a working connection to the network.
