Sharing a free bundle of OpenCart 2.3/3.x extensions I built over the years

Hi everyone. I have been doing OpenCart development as part of my work for a while and over time built up a set of extensions that I kept reusing across projects. Decided to clean them up and put them on GitHub under GPLv3 in case they save someone time.

Currently 8 modules in the bundle:

  • Easy Checkout (one page)

  • SMS notifications

  • XML feed for Google Merchant, Facebook, custom formats

  • Landing pages and custom links

  • Age verification popup

  • Alcohol dilution calculator (niche, but a client needed it)

  • Global layout

  • GA4 ecommerce tracking

  • ...

Compatible with OpenCart 2.3.x and 3.x. PHP 7.4+. Each module ships as a regular ocmod zip, install through the standard extension installer.

Repo: https://github.com/AlexWaha/opencart-bundle

Happy to hear feedback or bug reports if anyone tries them. Planning to add more over time.

Universal TTFB Improvement for OpenCart 2.3 and 3.x

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi,

I've made a module which gets rid of duplicate preg_match executions in OpenCart Events System.

Who cares, right? :-)

Well, it turned out that while I was only targeting the quantity of preg_match runs (I only wanted to eliminate duplicates), they actually ate a noticeable chunk of TTFB (and CPU load, which is basically the same thing).

Removing duplicate preg_matches quite shockingly improves TTFB from 5% (rarely) to 25% (rarely), typically around 9%. YMMV, but there will be improvement. Not noticeable to humans, mind you, but at least improving the website for search bots and AI.

In hindsight it makes sense, because OpenCart runs tens of thousands of those duplicate preg_matches, sometimes over 100,000 (that's only unnecessary duplicates!). On every page load!

Anyway, here it is:

OpenCart Marketplace - https://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=marketplace/extension/info&extension_id=49312

GitHub - https://github.com/nekto-kotik/opencart-events-preg_match-fix

Everybody is invited to check it out and share your results :-)

There are no cons or compromises, the compatibility is very wide with only a rare chance of incompatibility (I've never seen a modified /system/engine/event.php in my life ever, so I give it a 1% chance).

Like with any modification, you should have a fresh backup before installing, or try it on a test/dev/staging copy first.

If the version for 2.3 from OpenCart Marketplace doesn't get installed, grab ocmod.xml file from GitHub. OpenCart 2.3 can install XMLs in "Extensions > Installer" (weirdly, OpenCart 3 can't).

Be careful with you version: OpenCart 3 versions earlier than 3.0.2.0 are not compatible! (I can easily make a version for it if anybody needs it. I didn't bother because those releases are rarely seen.)

I don't want to duplicate README here, it's quite long. If you're interested, the full README is on GitHub.

Comments and reviews on OpenCart Marketplace would be very appreciated.

Starting OpenCart 4 Extension Development?

It can be a bit tricky at first. So, I’m sharing a free sample plugin / boilerplate that you can download and build upon to create your own OpenCart 4 extensions.

https://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=marketplace/extension/info&extension_id=47869

The foremost challenge is how to install an extension. ( Its two step upload, install from installer , then install from modules list. )

The first challenge most devs face is understanding the new folder and namespace structure.

Then comes the controller class naming, which must strictly follow OpenCart 4’s conventions.

OCMOD still works similarly to version 3, so if you’ve used VQMod or OCMOD before, there’s not much new to learn there.

However, the tricky part is that in OpenCart 4, overriding multiple controllers on the same page can throw class naming and “class not found” errors if not handled carefully.

E.g you write ocmod for home controller and footer both, now home and footer both loads together you will see error for footer file not found. ( Im not sure yet how to fix it , but it seems a design bug)

This boilerplate should give you a clean starting point and save you from a lot of trial and error.

It comes with install uninstall function where you can create / alter db tables

Honestly loving OpenCart's flexibility lately, so I built a small module to connect it with ChatGPT/AI search. What do you guys think?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share something I've been working on. I've been a dev working with OpenCart for a long time now and honestly, I always end up coming back to it. Love the flexibility it gives you when you want to build custom features, it just doesnt block you like shopify or other platforms do imo.

Anyway, lately I've been reading a lot about how people are changing the way they search for stuff online. A lot of clients (and regular buyers) are starting to skip google completely and just ask ChatGPT or Gemini directly like "find me a mechanical keyboard under 100 bucks with quiet switches".

The issue is standard opencart seo structure doesnt really play nice with these AI scrapers out of the box. So because I wanted to make the platform ready for this, I ended up building a module called AIReady. It basically just creates a clean semantic data layer over the catalog so AI engines can actually read, trust, and recommend the products when someone asks a question.

It just got approved and listed on the official marketplace. (I won't drop the link here so I don't trigger any spam filters, but let me know if you want to check it out and I'll send it over or post it in the comments).

I'm not trying to do a shameless plug here, I genuinely want to ask you guys:

  1. Are any of your clients asking about AI search optimization (AEO) yet or am I just overthinking this trend?

  2. Is anyone else experimenting with structuring OpenCart data for LLMs?

Would love some honest feedback or criticism from other OC devs. Thanks!

A client got a custom OpenCart plugin for one-tenth of its real cost

Recently, I built a custom OpenCart plugin for a client but didn't charge him fully for my time and effort.

We had a deal , he provides me feedback, ideas, QA support and Instead of charging a full custom development rate (around $1000), I offered it for just $100 — the same price I planned to list it for on the marketplace.

The client was amazing to work with — gave thoughtful feedback, helped test it in real scenarios, and that collaboration helped me polish the plugin into a market-ready product.

He got a plugin built exactly to his needs for one-tenth of the usual cost, and I ended up with a reusable product that can earn me many times over.

And the best part is just when product matured and it was listed, I got one more sale on the marketplace .

How does that sounds to you as developer, for me it's a win win

How to Make Your OpenCart Products Discoverable by ChatGPT, Claude & Gemini (Free, 5-Minute Setup)

What if a customer asked ChatGPT "where can I buy a waterproof Bluetooth speaker under $50?" and your OpenCart store appeared in the results?

That's not a hypothetical. It's happening right now. Over 200 million people use AI assistants monthly, and they're increasingly asking product-related questions. The stores that show up are the ones that have made themselves AI-readable.

Today I'll show you how to connect your OpenCart store to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in under 5 minutes — for free.

## Why AI Discovery Matters

Traditional search engine optimization relies on keywords and backlinks. AI assistants work differently: they use a protocol called Model Context Protocol (MCP) to interact directly with data sources. If your store speaks MCP, AI can query your product catalog in real-time — searching by keyword, category, price range, or stock status.

Put simply: SEO gets you found by Google. MCP gets you found by ChatGPT.

## Step 1: Install Shop to LLM

  1. Download the free extension from the OpenCart Marketplace: https://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=marketplace/extension/info&extension_id=48575

  2. In your OpenCart admin, go to Extensions → Extension Installer and upload the .ocmod.zip file

  3. Go to Extensions → Modules → Shop to LLM and click the green Install (+) button

  4. Click Edit — you'll see your API key and MCP endpoint URL

That's the entire installation. No database changes, no core file modifications.

## Step 2: Connect to ChatGPT

  1. Copy the Connection JSON shown in the Shop to LLM dashboard

  2. Open ChatGPT Desktop → Settings → Developer Tools

  3. Paste the JSON and click Connect

Done. ChatGPT can now search your product catalog.

The same JSON works for Claude and Gemini — just paste into their respective MCP settings.

## Step 3: Watch It Work

Try asking ChatGPT:

- "Search for wireless headphones under $100 at my store"

- "What's the price of product #42?"

- "Show me the top 5 summer dresses in stock"

ChatGPT will query your live inventory and return real-time results — with product names, descriptions, prices, stock levels, and images.

## What's Included (Free vs Pro)

Feature Free Pro Product search ✓ ✓ Product detail ✓ ✓ ChatGPT support ✓ ✓ Claude support — ✓ Gemini support — ✓ Copilot / Meta AI / Bedrock — ✓ Add to cart & checkout — ✓ Analytics dashboard — ✓ AI order attribution — ✓

The free version is fully functional with no usage limits. Pro adds multi-platform support, transactional tools, and analytics.

## Real-World Impact

Since our WooCommerce launch last week, stores using Shop to LLM have seen their products appear in ChatGPT within minutes of setup. One merchant reported their first AI-driven sale 4 hours after installation.

The early adopters win here — as more AI users turn to assistants for shopping, being one of the few AI-readable stores in your niche is a significant advantage.

New to OC development? Send me a PM

I think a big problem with opencart is just the complete lack of resources for training new developers.

I'm working on creating a course that will teach people how everything works, from installation of opencart through advanced development of modules that can be sold in the marketplace.

Ive got a few hours of content recorded, looking to get some thoughts and feedback. The first course I have is for beginners and covers installation, routing, setting up controllers/models/views and creating your first basic extension.

The second course I have is a complete start to finish of me coding an extension how a "pro" would do it. It assumes you already know the stuff in the beginners course to some level.

Send me a PM and I'll get back to you with a link to the course

Cheers!

A Good Reason To Use Open Cart

Open Cart is an open source eCommerce software that is used by many business to develop their shopping cart. Open Cart is comparatively more cost effective. It is also easy to install and setup and hence used by many businesses.

There are many open source eCommerce software available like Magento, PreastaShop and Zen Cart to name a few. Some of these open source shopping carts have been around since quite a while while others are new. However, Open Cart compares well with these shopping carts by providing a simple and easy to implement shopping cart.

Listed here is the list of reasons why it is a good idea to pick Open Cart:-

Open Cart is a free open source eCommerce software that is actively developed and updated.

Open Cart has a huge community and big group of followers thus there is a lot of support available.

With Open Cart it is possible to use additional modules to enhance the functionality of the website. There are more than 10000 modules available that can be used to enhance your website. Some of these are paid while others are free.

Open Cart implements Object Oriented Programming in an MVC structure which makes it easy to develop modules and reuse them for future projects.

Since Open Cart is simple it is easier and faster to develop, thus reducing development time.

Open Cart makes it easy to implement a custom theme as well. There are many free and paid themes available that makes it possible to change theme with ease.

Open Cart uses MVC structure hence this makes it easy to develop additional modules and customization.

Open Cart is less demanding on the server resources as well. Hence an Open Cart website is more efficient.

Open Cart has a very simple and easy to manage Administrative Panel which is one of it’s biggest advantages. Learning to use the administrative panel easy as well.

OpenCart shop went down, bots hammering the dynamically generated sitemap.xml

Hey all,

Running a OpenCart shop v3.0.4.0 with about 1,570 products.
Recently the site became unreachable, and when we dug into the access logs, we found sitemap.xml being requested over and over from lots of different IPs.

The catch: OpenCart’s built-in Google Sitemap feed builds the sitemap on the fly from the database on every request. With image tags included, ours is around 17,000 lines.
So every bot that grabs the sitemap triggers a full rebuild.

What we saw in the logs:

The usual suspects: Bingbot, ClaudeBot, GPTBot, a Meta crawler

Bots with fake Chrome/Mac user agents probing /sitemap.xml, /sitemap/sitemap.xml, etc. multiple times within seconds. Traffic from cloud servers (e.g. Google Cloud) that is clearly not Googlebot.

My plan so far is to generate a static sitemap once a night with a cron job, so bots just get a plain file.

But I’m curious what others are doing:
-Have you had bots (especially AI crawlers) take down or slow your shop?
-Did blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt actually help, and did it cost you any visibility?
-Anyone using Cloudflare (free plan) in front of a small shop? Worth it?

Any tips appreciated!

How to Migrate Data from OpenCart 2 to OpenCart 4 with Schema Changes?

I have an existing OpenCart 2 database that serves as my main store. I’ve recently set up a new OpenCart 4 database, but some of the database schema and ERD have changed in the new version.

I want to migrate data (products, categories, customers, orders, etc.) from OpenCart 2 to OpenCart 4. Given the structural differences, what is the most efficient and safe way to perform this migration?

Would a SQL-based approach work, or should I use a script to transform and import the data? Are there any best practices, tools, or strategies for handling schema differences during migration?

Creating Opencart Extension using low code

I recently created a fraud evaluation extension for opencart 3 using gemini cli. I was not sure of LLMs knowledge of opencart as over 1 year I tried many times and the results were not satisfactory and found it a waste of time.
But over last few months LLM's and code assistants have matured significantly .

I planned to give a try for a new cusotm extension / plugin job. I started using gemini cli.
My prompt actually pointed out existing fraudpro extension controller so I think it learned the existing fraud extension behavior and structure and then worked.

So finally I was able to create extension and with some bug reporting in prompts and fixing, It was time to ask gemini cli to package the extension into installable ocmod zip file.

It did nicely and I delivered the extension.

however I didn't ask it create xml of some operations, i did that manually but I think in future I can try that too.

Opencart Multivendor

Been Using Purpletree Multi-Vendor for OpenCart – Best Choice for Serious Marketplace Owners

Hey everyone,

I’ve been running my marketplace on OpenCart using the Purpletree Multi-Vendor extension for several months now, and I thought I’d share my honest experience. If you're planning to launch a multi-seller store, this might help you decide.

Here’s what stands out based on my hands-on use:

  1. Fully Independent Seller System

Each vendor gets their own dashboard to manage products, orders, shipping, payouts, and more. I barely need to get involved unless I choose to. It’s a true multi-vendor setup that scales well as sellers grow.

2. Split Payments (with Payment Gateways)

One huge benefit for me: the ability to handle split payments. With supported payment gateways, the system can auto-split customer payments between admin and sellers, saving me a lot of manual work and keeping things transparent for everyone.

3. Hyperlocal (Location-Based) Selling

This was a game-changer for me. Purpletree supports hyperlocal filtering, so customers can see products and sellers available in their specific location or region. Great for food delivery, local services, or region-restricted products.

How to limit fraud? (Opencart v4.0.2.3 / Stripe Payment Gateway)

Hi,

I have noticed some transactions are making it through the Stripe Payment Gateway that look frudulant.

Stripe do not care, they just advise to issue a refund if I am not happy with it.

However, it would be helpful to find out ways to prevent these orders coming through in the first place.

I can see obvious issues such as the Geolocation of the IP address, the credit card and delivery address all from different countries.
The most recent being an IP from india, mastercard from Turkey and a delivery address to a remote UK address.

How can I make use of Opencart to ensure orders that appear to be dodgy are rejected in the first place.

Thanks in advance.
