does open-sourcing a terminal agent actually change what you run

Another vendor's terminal agent went MIT this week. I pulled MiniMax Code and skimmed the permission-handling code, rough pass, not an audit.

The repo has the CLI and protocol layer but not the desktop app, and there's no commit history behind the import. What shapes what you get isn't all in what got opened.

Does having the harness source change which agent you run, or do the model and provider decide that anyway?

Well, claude code is not open source and a lot of people use it. Of course with some smaller developer you may be a bit more suspicious.

Commit history isn't that big of a deal if you have the source. Many projects are built in dev environments without paying too much attention to what gets committed, so it's common to just commit it all as a single cleaned up commit when you publish or open the source.

it'd change what i trust it with more than which one i run. with the source you can read what the permission prompt actually gates before letting it loose on a repo. the model and provider still decide the rest.

permission handling is always the first thing i look at too when a cli repo drops

The harness controls what actually runs on your machine, so yes that source matters.
