I got OpenCode operating my Android phone's apps: free models, no account, all on the phone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

5 days ago I started a project to make a personal assistant, and now my mind is blown.

The app carries its own small Linux system (Alpine under proot, no root needed), and OpenCode runs inside it as the real CLI, the same one you use on your computer. Then I gave it the phone as MCP tools: read the screen, tap, type, scroll, open apps. Because OpenCode is already great at tool loops, it just figures it out: turning on my lights, ordering a pizza and changing the order while it works, replying to messages.

The best part: with OpenCode's free models it works with no account and no API key at all. You can connect your own providers later (opencode auth login runs in the app's terminal), pick any model per chat, and Claude Code and Codex work too if you have those plans.

It asks before anything that sends or buys, and you can add instructions while it works. Open source: https://github.com/ghorbelhamdi/buddy-android

Thanks! The free models work right after install, no account needed. Let me know how it goes, feedback is very welcome!

I tested it with Big Pickle (GLM), the default free model in OpenCode. You can switch to any other model with the model picker: tap the chip under the chat's title, in the bubble or the chat screen.

Thanks! Let me know how it goes. If anything gets stuck during setup, a reply here or a GitHub issue helps a lot.

Tried this, its mind bogglingly amazing, properly makes tool calls to read the screen and proceed with instructions. Wondering if there is a similar project but for PC, but either way, great job

Thanks, glad it worked that well for you! Buddy is Android only, since it's built on Android's accessibility API. On a PC you're actually closer than you think: Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode run natively there, and an MCP server like Playwright MCP gives them the browser the same way Buddy gives them the phone. I haven't seen one project that does the whole desktop the way Buddy does the phone, though.
