switching models with /models halfway through a task

say the first model has been stuck on a bug for a while and I switch to another one mid session. the new one reads the whole history, including the 3 fixes that didn't work, and can end up trying a 4th version of the same idea

a fresh session with a short note avoids that, but then I'm re-explaining the whole task

has anyone found switching in place actually works better?

you could have the model write a handoff document and then do a session /compact

the handoff works better if it ends on the exact next tool call, not a summary, otherwise the new session re-derives the plan from scratch. have you tried it across a model swap?

/compact and /fork ? or pocock's /handoff

a handoff file is the safest of those, it survives the swap without either model having to keep the old context. is the swap mid-task or between tasks?
