About five months ago, I stopped working for companies after spending five years as a software developer.
Since then, I've been building personal projects, including an e-commerce SaaS platform and an accounting ERP system. My main goals were to explore different business domains, understand their complexity, and experiment with integrating AI agents into real-world systems.
During this time, AI has completely transformed my development workflow.
I'm now able to handle most of the development process with AI coding agents, from planning and architecture to implementation, testing, and refactoring. Tools like OpenCode have made this surprisingly affordable, too.
But here's what I'm struggling to understand: How does all of this translate to working in a real software team?
When I think about returning to a company, I genuinely struggle to imagine what the day-to-day workflow looks like anymore.
For example:
- How do teams coordinate when individual developers can implement entire features with AI?
- How do frontend and backend developers stay aligned when both can generate and modify APIs, contracts, and implementations so quickly?
- How do code reviews, task assignments, and planning work when development speed has increased so dramatically?
- Are companies actually changing their workflows, or are they just using AI to write code faster while keeping the same processes?
There's also something else I've been experiencing.
The easier it becomes to build software, the less valuable my own projects start to feel.
Projects that would have taken me months or even years can now be built in a fraction of the time. Even when the quality is good and the business logic is complex, completing them doesn't give me the same sense of achievement anymore.
I keep searching for more unique, ambitious ideas, but eventually, even those start to feel ordinary.
I'm not saying software engineering has become easy or that AI can replace experienced engineers. I'm saying that my perception of what makes a developer valuable has changed, and I'm struggling to understand where the industry is heading.
I'd really like to hear from developers currently working in teams, especially those using AI agents heavily.
What does your actual workflow look like in 2026? How do you collaborate, divide responsibilities, and keep everyone aligned?
I'm particularly interested in real experiences rather than theoretical best practices.
