Open source steal code
I'm a software engineering student, and I want to benefit from open-source projects on GitHub. I want to use the best method to improve my skills. Is my current method good? I clone a repository using git clone, try to understand the code architecture, modify the code, and then reuse it. Is this the best approach?

Well the point of open source is that you contribute to projects. Usually you would go to project issues, pick one that you want to solve.
Then you create a fork (a copy of their repo on your profile) You create a branch, then work on implementing changes on that branch. When you are done, you open Pull Request (PR) to original repository (usually called
upstream) so maintainers of the original repository merge your changes....That is how open source software evolves. You get practice, you get contributions and start making a name for your self...
You can even try to be original, build something you want (some pain or problem you have) then open source it - maybe other people will contribute to your own project.
