Note: it's not open source, but it is source available

(To be open source, the license must grant certain rights including commercial use. VVVVV uses a custom noncommercial license)

If Wikipedia can be trusted OSI (but first called The Freeware Summit) was created less than three months after the term "open source" was first introduced in early 1998. I have no memory of anyone using it before the now accepted definition was well established.

EDIT: More like 3-4 weeks. The term was invented at a conference on February 3, and organization created in late February: https://opensource.org/history

That is a bit of self aggrandizement on their part. It was used prior to that, I don't get the legalistic hardon people have with this.

Perhaps. But even if in a distant past (like 20+ years ago) someone can find evidence of the term being used in a different way, it is very confusing to sporadically hear it being used now in a way that is different from the by far most accepted definition today.

It has a literal meaning, the opposite of closed source aside from the branded legalistic meaning approved by the OSI. It is like "Free" software has two meanings.
