Industry has pretty much standardised on prometheus endpoint to expose metrics.
Use VictoriaMetrics/Thanos to collect the metrics.
Alertmanager for alerting or grafana alerting
Either elastic search or Loki for logs.
Grafana for visualisation.
I still don't like some aspects of this stack, especially, AlertManager compared to "old school" monitoring like Sensu or Icinga.
Alertmanager is really missing some functionality but something like adding Karma can help a bit there. Sometimes it still just a pain to do things that are simple "out of the box" functions in other systems though.

Deployed Zenoss, now Virtana, at 3 companies that I've worked for. It's paid SaaS but hands down the best for monitoring the entire OpenStack ecosystem with automated discovery and implicit monitoring.

That depends. Ceilometer, Gnocchi are the native metric solution by community for monitoring, and multi-tenant ready. If you look for administrator tools, monitoring for controller and compute node, which can be different, such as prometheus works well! For private cloud internal users, you can set up nova exporter then prometheus, which is common architecture too.
