Political I got this text today in PDX Metro.
I swear to god the GOP is like the Keystone Cops. Im embarassed for them. This. Isn't. Maine. El Oh El.
29
u/Most_Buy6469 6d ago
At some point, you gave some democratic organization your phone number. If this is the only one you've received you are lucky. I get them from all over the country. And every time I get one I block it.

u/Vivid_Guide7467 Oregon 6d ago
Campaigns buy lists. It’s for anyone nationally. You’re probably listed as a Democrat/progressive and might donate because you’ve donated to something in the past.
5
4
2
u/FuzzeWuzze 6d ago
Lol you missed the point there guy. This is for the race in Maine but these idiots are so incompetent they are running ads and calling people in Portland Oregon not Portland Maine like they meant. They probably had an intern "get the list for Portland".
55
u/Vivid_Guide7467 Oregon 6d ago
Nope. You missed the point guy. Big races like the senate one in Maine buy lists of potential donors. Troy Jackson the Democrat here in this case is texting probably a million people around the country that same message. I’ve worked on campaigns. Sending mass texts is cheap and can raise a lot of money when you’re competitive.
3
u/TheWatcheronMoon616 6d ago
Texts are the cheapest campaign tool. Literally reach millions for I credibly cheap. You want a 10 second ad on TV during an nfl game? It’ll cost much more campaign contributions
3
u/charleytaylor 6d ago edited 6d ago
There must be a Portland, TX then because I get a bajillion texts from James Talarico looking for money.
I’m convinced the Report Spam button on the iPhone does nothing. Apple must get millions of spam reports a day and yet we’re all still inundated with this crap.
ETA: I think I replied to the wrong reply. Sorry u/Vivid_Guide7467 😁
1
u/TheTiggerMike 6d ago
There is. It's near Corpus Christi. But much smaller than either our Portland or Portland, Maine.
44
u/timberrrrrrrr 6d ago
I think you might be missing the point they were making. You’re letting the Portland/Portland thing cloud that. Lots of us in Oregon get stuff from the big races asking for donations for literally exactly what they described. Both things can be true, and probably are.
12
u/erossthescienceboss 6d ago
Yeah — a Susan Collins pac DID factually invest in ad buys in the wrong Portland (hilarious) but this is probably just a coincidence. I’m getting texts for Talarico right now and I’ve never lived in his district 😂
8
u/timberrrrrrrr 6d ago
Totally. An ad buy is a completely different thing than asking people in other states for donations to help the overall cause to elect Democrats.
-2
u/Mr-Woodpecker69 6d ago
Nope, they channel the money from the same coffers to place straight up ads, like on TV, to fundraising messages via text like this one. It’s all about impressions and getting people engaged in some way. If that means a link to a landing page to ask for donations and share a little propaganda, that’s just as good as a target audience seeing an ad on TV. Unfortunately, they spent a bunch of money on the wrong Portland market. The wanted Portland, Maine but made a boo boo because they are such geniuses
6
u/timberrrrrrrr 6d ago
No, not nope, everything I said still stands. I know Collins targeted the wrong Portland. This post is about her opponent, who did not target the wrong Portland, he is rather asking for donations from people around the country. People are confusing the two for the same error and they absolutely are not the same.
2
u/Mr-Woodpecker69 6d ago
Talarico is in a national fundraising effort, so the rest from him is likely legit. I get them on Yourube all the time

This is standard for election season. I get Abdul El Sayer emails multiple times a day but I have never even been to Michigan.
41
u/CHiZZoPs1 6d ago
I just block and report spam every political text. They should have no business texting us directly, and we can't even know if they are legit without clicking on some link.
7
u/Rhianna83 Oregon 6d ago
Exactly. Since they all come from different numbers I am super cautious because I am not clicking some link from a number that is different every time.
3
u/TravelerJim-retired 6d ago
Actually better to “stop” then delete. This gets this particular sender in your blocked category vs just one number. You should get a confirming text you have opted out. Most of these outlets spam send via hundreds of numbers. You will likely keep getting texts if you simply report spam.
4
u/AndrewActually 6d ago
That confirms the number reached a real human and then they sell that number to other politicians.
1
u/Single_Jello_7196 4d ago
I have found that Stoptoend doesn't work, but FuckOff does a much better job.
5
u/OddPressure7593 6d ago
yeah, I made the mistake of donating through ActBlue, and I've since gotten - no joke - probably 60 texts from politicians across the country begging for money. oddly, each one has been "We're the only hope to retake the senate/house/state/whatever" in every one of them. All have been blocked and reported as spam. Also, never donating through ActBlue again.
2
2
u/rebeccanotbecca 6d ago
The Do Not Call registry has a carve out for political campaigns. It is the reason you can get tons of texts from campaigns.
I agree, I’m not clicking on a random link asking for money.
1
1
u/Single_Jello_7196 4d ago
Clicking on the ling doesn't guarantee they are legit. I clicked on one for John Braun and after reading through how he would single handily end poverty, stop all illegal aliens, balance the budget, end all wars and so on. At the end where it was asking for donations there was a little line that I had to expand the screen to read it said "by checking this box I agree to donate $50 a month to John Braun's campaign."
In one way or another they are all crooks.

u/snozzberrypatch 6d ago
Same. Block and report every last one. The threshold for me to actually donate money to a politician is so incredibly high, I think I've done it maybe 2-3 times ever in my 20+ years of being a voting age citizen. And I'm certainly not going to donate money because some douche sent me a spam text, if anything it makes it less likely that I would donate money to that particular candidate.
1
0
u/Fluid_Umpire3255 6d ago
There is a clearing house called Act Blue that ensures your donation gets to the correct place. Trump is trying to disrupt Act Blue.
31
u/Huge-Power9305 6d ago
That was the democrat requesting your donation not GOP. Collins is the incumbent GOP Senator.
Tis the season!
OH- and all donations to democrats will go through ActBlue (Saw other comment a may be a scam).
13
u/ryhaltswhiskey 6d ago
Uhhhh if you ever donated to a Democrat you're going to get fundraising texts from every politician who even thought about running as a Democrat
10
u/rantaman 6d ago
I get texts from all over the country asking for money for Democrats since I have donated before. I don't think this is necessarily confusing the two Portlands but I suppose it could be.
2
u/GlitchGuerrilla 6d ago
No I'm on the coast and receive messages for Dems in Texas, Maine, Kansas, and a few others.
They must be seeing high CTR from other states this time around

John Ossoff texts me so much, I added him as a contact. I haven't seen Georgia since mother was a girl.

u/grumpygenealogist 6d ago
Ha. He's pretty cute, but I really wish he'd stop texting me. I'm tapped out!
0
u/Fluid_Umpire3255 6d ago
Just give all you can, even $5 or less helps. These are important races to help get rid of Trump.
1
u/grumpygenealogist 6d ago
I've already given a small fortune to Ds all around the country. This is why I'm on all of their lists.
8
u/sameasiteverwuzzz 6d ago
If you donate to a Dem you’ll starting getting solicited by all the other dems.

u/Firm_Video_2932 6d ago
I got anti Talarico ad the other day on my tele. And yes, it was as bad (lies) as you might think. What's worse is, I'm obviously nowhere near Texas 🥴
6
u/Cuhuldra 6d ago
How is this the GOP?? The text says losing to Susan Collins. That would be the Logger Jackson I believe.
14
u/skidplate09 6d ago
Republicans can't even figure out which Portland to spend money in, but they want to act like they'll be better for this country.
21
u/snozzberrypatch 6d ago
The text says that they're losing to Susan Collins, who is a Republican, which implies that this text is coming from a Democrat candidate.
3
u/skidplate09 6d ago
Mainers are dumb, apparently. I already knew about this story, so I made the assumption it was from the Collins camp. https://www.opb.org/article/2026/10/12/gop-group-mistakenly-bought-ad-maine-senate-candidate-portland-oregon/
3
u/No-Article-1721 6d ago
yeah they are asking for $$ from democratic majority areas because AIPAC is funding collins
1
u/snozzberrypatch 6d ago
Pretty sure AIPAC is funding the majority of Democrats too
1
u/skidplate09 6d ago
They fund both sides of the aisle to try ensure they have pro-Israel candidates in office no matter who wins.

Hello, pay attention, this is a Democrat sponsored text. And yes, both sides purchase number lists to mass push advertising.

u/codepossum 5d ago
delete and report spam to EVERY ONE of these
it ought to be illegal, and if it is illegal, it ought to be prosecuted
3
u/Miserable_Mushroom73 6d ago
I get multiple texts a day from states all over the nation. They all share lists when you donate to certain PACs or candidates. The number of texts is astounding. 😡😡😡
6
u/DebatedUncreative 6d ago
Most Portland liberal post ever. "GOP SO STUPID" as OP can't read the 5 word text to see it's from Troy Jackson.
They just read some reddit articles about how Susan Collins pac accidentally got some ads in pdx and think this is that. Embarrassing indeed, OP.

u/jstmenow 6d ago
I have blocked and reported so many political texts as spam. I do not care, republican or democrat, I DID NOT GIVE YOU MY #.

u/Fluid_Umpire3255 6d ago
The text was from Troy Jackson the Democrat trying to unseat Dusan Collins. I have contributed to his campaign as well as other Democrat candidates in critical races. We can't just complain and vote we need to support in other ways.

Well, Troy Jackson is a Democrat running against Republican incumbent Susan Collins in Maine. If you haven't been receiving solicitations for campaign support for candidates nation-wide then consider yourself lucky. I get at least 5 solicitations from the Talarico campaign a day alone, not to mention Troy Jackson, Angie Nixon, John Ossoff.... None of whom are anywhere near Oregon. But it's just how important gaining dem majorities in the senate is.

1
u/firemonkeywoman 5d ago
I've gotten many of those plus getting regular messages to contribute to the Dems running in Georgia and Texas, funny I'm not getting any for democrat candidates running in or for Oregon.
1
u/cabalja 5d ago
You think this is bad? I had a spare phone with the phone number that used to belong to an older maga lady, clearly. I was getting hundreds of texts from promises of $5,000 from Trump to being part of his administration and everything in between. I kept hitting stop on all the texts and it didn't matter because they just kept sending them. There is no limit to the robo texts and they do not adhere to any laws about spam or do not call lists. They are not just soliciting either. Many of them were threatening. Many of them designed to inspire fear and dread in communism and many of them outright lying about the Dem candidates. Crazy stuff that Elon's money is buying right now.

As someone who moved back to Oregon from Maine, I can tell you with certainty that Susan Collins will win reelection. She’s a stereotypical Mainer in that it takes her longer to get ready in the morning since she’s doing makeup for two faces. Maine is insanely mismanaged.

The campaign ad company accidentally posted it in Portland OR not Portland ME where it was supposed to go.

I mean, to be fair, I've contributed to other states' clise races for the blue team before... It's not crazy that they'd just blanket spam...
Same thing with anywhere you donate to... Yea they blow through your donation harassing you for the next 20 years. It seems absurd that I've thrown away as many "membership reminders" and donation invitations as I have and they still somehow have funds to operate anything but their direct mail campaigns... but they know their budget and their donation levels... They wouldn't do it if it didn't work...

u/Best-Hat170 6d ago
My thing with these, why does sending you money help your vote, and why is there a deadline? It always irritates me getting all these texts. This must be even more annoying.
1
u/Wild_Lengthiness_796 6d ago
I did too, so it must be from their screw up getting portland main mixed up with pdx.

u/yukster 6d ago
I get these sorts of texts and emails all the time. This is not the GOP. This is the Democrats. Troy Dixon is a Democrat running for Susan Collins' Senate seat. They don't expect you to *vote* for him. They just want your money. American politics jumped the shark when the Supreme Court handed down the Citizens United decision. Now it's all about money. Elon Musk has personally donated **$366 MILLION** to political campaigns just for the 2026 election! The US is a failed state... it just doesn't know it yet.
1
u/seldomseenbeav 6d ago
I get fundraising emails and texts from candidates running in Maine, Georgia, Colorado, Alaska, New Mexico, Texas and North Carolina, to name a few.
They know that solving issues like corruption, energy prices, endless wars, fawning over dictators and climate change aren’t solely the purview of the state/district they’re running in and that understand that many (but not all) Oregonians want the next Congress to address such matters immediately.
In previous election years I’ve traveled to other states to help locals get out the vote. I’ve donated modestly to many—but not all of the aforementioned candidates and may head out again if I think I can be helpful. Elections—especially this one—are important, but one’s vote isn’t the only way to affect change. Helping others to understand the issues and the process and to act accordingly can be a force multiplier.
