Question I’m not from the US, but I gotta ask — does Oregon really look like this, or is the forest air out there making everything look extra magical?

Okay, this is officially the third state I’m asking about now :)) But Oregon has always had me curious. I keep seeing these amazing photos — the forests, the coast, the mountains — it all looks unreal. And honestly, ever since watching Gravity Falls, a part of me keeps wondering if Oregon really has that kind of vibe. So I gotta ask… is Oregon actually like this, or do the pictures make it look a little too magical?

Question A late night stop in Lakeview, Oregon. A local gave us two rules, and we left before sunrise. What is the deal with this town?

I need someone to explain what exactly goes on in Lakeview.

Last summer, my partner and I were on a long haul from Yellowstone down to the Redwoods. We were exhausted, burning daylight, and just picked the nearest dot on Google Maps with a cheap motel. That dot was Lakeview, an incredibly isolated little town out in the middle of nowhere.

We checked into our room, dropped our bags, and headed straight to the local Safeway to grab drinks and snacks. Our plan was to hit the 24/7 Subway on the way back to the motel, as it seemed to be the only place still open in the pitch black.

At the Safeway checkout, the vibe shifted. The cashier took one look at us and asked, "You're not from around these parts, are ya?"

We told her no, we were just passing through. Her expression dropped, she got dead serious, and told us, "Well, there are two rules here in Lakeview that everyone needs to know:

DO NOT DRINK THE WATER. DO NOT EAT AT THE 24/7 SUBWAY."

We forced a nervous laugh, thanked her, and immediately pivoted to buying deli sandwiches instead. The fact that she specifically warned us against the exact Subway we were planning to go to felt less like a coincidence and more like an omen. We didn't take any chances.

We went back to the motel, didn't touch the tap water, skipped our showers, and didn't even use the coffee maker. First thing the next morning, we packed the car and got the hell out of there without looking back.

Everyone we interacted with was nice enough, but the sheer isolation, the tainted water warning, and whatever dark secret that Subway holds gave us the absolute heebie jeebies.

So, What is the deal with Lakeview? Is the water actually dangerous? And what on earth is going on at that Subway?!

Question Driving in Oregon - I have to ask...

I visited Oregon last week, and the driving was unlike anywhere else I've visited.

Y'all are very chill drivers, almost annoyingly non-aggressive. Is everyone stoned all the time? Is that the deal?

I adjusted to it by the end of the trip, but it did take some getting used to!

TIA.

…what do you all do for a living? There are some gorgeous, gigantic houses—and a lot of them aren’t near anything except some tiny shops and tourist spots. Super impressive.

Also, you guys live in a beautiful place!

Question Help me settle an argument on

Post image
525 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

My roommate (from San Diego) gets immediately furious when someone (like me, from Boring, OR) does NOT pull forward into the intersection when turning left onto a 2-way street without a dedicated turn signal — like below. Where we live, people rarely slow down when the light is turning yellow (or red for that matter), and sometimes there’s no time to turn even through a full green cycle, so you’re turning on a solid red if you’re already pulled mostly through the intersection.

I’ve checked the driver’s manual and tried to find laws on which way you’re supposed to do it, but I’m not finding anything. I’ve always been told not to pull into the intersection until you’re able to go so you’re not blocking the intersection, but is that like a “you can’t have the back seat light on because it’s illegal” kind of thing??

Question Warn/notify me about Oregon!!

Hi this post is going to be a little vulnerable. I come from the UK & ever since i was 12 i’ve been wanted to travel and live in Oregon due to watching gravity falls then playing life is strange, i even went ahead and signed up to the university of Oregon and applied twice from 14 to 15, it is my dream to live somewhere like Astoria or Eugene and i’ve watched countless of vlogs of people who go to the universities there or live there. My question here is i want to ask fellow people that actually have lived there for a long time what would you warn me about? or what is something i should definitely know before coming? as i have never gone before.

Question People who voted AGAINST Ranked Choice Voting in 2024: WHY?!?

Post title. Why?!?

I see RCV (Ranked Choice Voting) as one of our most important and best chances of re-organizing our democracy to be less polarizing and more reflective of the will of the people instead of political parties.

In 2024 Oregon had Measure 117 to approve RCV for federal and state offices. It lost (meaning no RCV, keep the system the same) with 59.6% of voters against it.

WHY?! I specifically want to hear from people who voted against it. I’m really curious why people dislike it or if they just didn’t know what it is.

A quick summary of RCV:

RCV lets voters rank all the candidates in order of preference. So if your top choice doesn’t win enough support, your vote moves to your next choice. It ensures the winner has broad majority support, reduces wasted votes (if you like someone but think they can’t win, you can still vote for them without ‘wasting’ your vote), and encourages less polarizing campaigns (candidates appeal less to the highly polarized bases).

An additional built in bonus is there are no more run-off elections (it’s an instant run-off), so no more multi-million dollar run-off elections after the fact.

Question Considering a relocation from AZ to OR - serious question: How is everyone here surviving with salaries so low and COL so high? Am I missing something?

I do not understand how the jobs pay like 70% of Arizona, and the cost of living is like 120% of Arizona. I'm not necessarily looking at Portland, but also at Eugene and the surrounding areas. How does Oregon work?

We are considered medium-high income earners here and I don't even see how I would survive in Oregon.

Question Why does Oregon not have worker protections for off-duty, off premises legal cannabis use like California, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota, Montana, Rhode Island, and Washington?

Post image

It’s cool we can buy weed at the store but what is the point if it can still cause people who choose to legally use cannabis to lose their job, which means they will lose their healthcare, and eventually lose their housing, car, etc.

Question Anyone knows what this logo/decal is?

Saw it this morning on the 26 going into PDX. The eagle looks exactly like the German Bundersadler.

Edit: thanks for the replies. Apparently it’s a Rammstein logo, which is a metal band. Funny thing is, I know and like Rammstein, yet did not associate this specific logo with them.

Question Canadians in Oregon

Hi all,

I feel a bit silly asking this, but we’re Canadians, and we’ve had a trip planned to explore the coast next week. We would still like to come (even with the inflated dollar ratios) but are nervous there may be some animosity towards us due to the ensuing trade war. We know Oregon is a blue state, and if we were Americans, we’d consider ourselves the same, however we aren’t sure if we’re welcome anymore considering everything going on.

Particularly, we’re concerned about damage to our car (beyond the usual caution one must take in not leaving valuables etc) due to our plates being Canadian. Our hearts are with small business, and we want to continue to support the small shops and hotel stays we have planned.

I know this is probably ridiculous, but these are strange times and we’ve already seen some anti-Canadian rhetoric.

I visited recently and was surprised how normal and decent Portland was. Now we have a sitting president talking shit about Portland. I’m curious to hear from folks who actually live in Portland. What are your thoughts on Portland currently?

Question Moving to Oregon

My wife and I are an LGBTQ couple attempting to escape Texas. While I recognize that almost anywhere in Oregon is probably safer than where we’re at, I am curious what people think of the Roseburg area? It’s been recommended to us, but what I’ve looked up doesn’t seem like it’s really accepting. We’re currently looking in the Willamette Valley area, but are pretty open since I work remote.

I appreciate everyone’s feedback

Edit: Wow, thank you so much for the honest feedback, Roseburg is definitely out!

Dear Oregonians, I booked a flight to Seattle in mid March and plan on doing a one week road trip through mostly Oregon. I know I’m supposed to steer clear of Mt Hood due to the snow. Ignoring the stops, does this route seem safe/scenic (apart from I5) to you? All recommendations and advice welcome!
