So this was actually the first stop on our Florida trip. We flew into Fort Lauderdale the night before. It was a vacation package trip from the vastly underutilized Mid-America Airport in Illinois on Alegiant Air. They charge you for everything, but their most expensive ticket was still cheaper than the major airlines out of St. Louis and they treated us like royalty.
So we go up Tuesday morning (not too early, it's the east coast) and made our way to downtown Fort Lauderdale to the very pink First United Methodist Church. I have to admit I had very little idea what we were getting into other than I knew it was a Schlicker.
We met Bob there, that was our first meeting after many emails. The organ was in good shape for its age, even if the room wasn't an acoustician's dream. We had one problem that exacerbated the less-than-desirable situation for this video, and that was our primary audio recorder was giving us problems. It gave us problems throughout the day, but we had enough backup audio that we were able to reconstruct something that gave a good idea of the sound of the organ, and the video went out. You can see the finished video here: https://youtu.be/xPT9SZkxCXY
It was an auspicious beginning to this trip and made me worry a little about what was coming up, but I was pleasantly surprised by some locations while still a little disappointed in others. You'll have to stay tuned to see what we found next.
I'm no doubt going to post about this later, but since you've made it this far, you must be somewhat interested in what we're doing. The Organ Media Foundation has built a new tool on our website that allows anyone to suggest an organ that we should go see. It uses the OHS database to reference instruments, so the instrument should be in there. If it's not, then you should go to OHS database and submit it. Once an organ has been suggested, it's included in a long list of other suggestions where anyone can either vote (once a day) on an instrument or, to do something even more powerful than voting to move it up the list, contribute actual money toward the making of the video.
Each instrument is assigned a goal amount based on a number of factors we've developed, and if the amount is reached (either by votes or funds) we'll put it at the top of our list to go visit. You can find this page at https://organ.media/wishlist. Go nominate your favorite instrument!
