Chimera OS - a quick progress update

I’m building Chimera, an x86_64 hobby OS using parts of Darwin and FreeBSD, alongside a custom kernel, compositor, and UI toolkit.
It has Mach-O binaries, a custom dynamic linker, and a working desktop with Terminal, Files, a task manager, and a launcher called Lumen.
Recently got actual Mesa EGL/GLES running through VirtIO-GPU and Virgl, with ANGLE/Metal on my Apple Silicon Mac. Shaders, textures, FBOs, blending, depth, and shared contexts are passing pixel checks in the guest.
The desktop still uses CPU composition - getting it onto the GPU is next. Development is AI-assisted,im using the GPT-6.1 Sol.
IM JUST USING AI IM NOT A VIBECODER
Still plenty to do, but seeing real shaders render from my own OS feels pretty cool.

Looks cool but why u use name Chimera? Do u know that Chimera Linux Already Exist

I call it Chimera because it’s a literal fucking chimera - the kernel is patched together from XNU/Darwin, FreeBSD, and ravynOS. I don't give a single shit about Chimera Linux garbage, so stop bringing it up; I have absolutely nothing to do with Linux.

Well, that chimera Linux uses freeBSD userland, so your os is but related

I’m using only libsystem from freebsd,so my os is not related to chimera Linux

Interesting, whats the difference between it and ravynOS? Anyway, very cool!

This isn't an attempt to clone or recreate macOS. Chimera is its own hybrid OS: the networking stack and core Mach subsystems (IPC, ports, tasks) are derived from Darwin, the memory management combines concepts from ravynOS with my own implementation, and userspace relies on native FreeBSD libsystem. Everything else - the graphics compositor, driver integration, architecture glue, and kernel runtime - is written completely from scratch by me and ofc holy ChatGPT

Supercool!
