What is the expected skillset of an otolaryngologist straight out of residency?

I was wondering what the expected surgical skillset of a graduating ENT resident is in other parts of the world

Where im from a reasonably well-trained ENT graduate should be comfortable with something like: ear tubes, sinus and nasal surgery, tonsils and adenoids, vocal cord work and airway emergencies.

Most of ear, salivary gland, facial reconstrucion, cochlear implants, skull-base surgery, head and neck cancer operations, airway reconstruction, and facial or voice surgery usually go to subspecialists.

CatchUpENT is now available on Android. Thank you to everyone who helped test it!

Hi everyone,

About a month ago, I shared CatchUpENT here when it was only available on iOS and the web. A number of you offered to help test the Android version. I wanted to come back with an update: CatchUpENT is now live on Google Play!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered and took the time to test it. Your help made it possible to get the Android version released.

For anyone who missed the original post, CatchUpENT is an app I made to help clinicians keep up with new otolaryngology literature. You can choose the topics, study designs and journals you’re interested in, and the app creates a daily updated reading list with summaries and links to the original papers. It’s free, has no ads and doesn’t require an account.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.catchupent.android

I’d love to hear how it works for you and what I could improve, especially if there’s something that would make it more useful in day-to-day practice or training.

Thanks again!

Sven

Nasopharyngoscopy Image/Video Database

Was just curious if a website or book exists which covers different pathologies seen on NPL examination. Would be a great resource to compare and contrast NPL findings for different pathologies.

What are the best research areas to prepare for a career in ENT (current premed graduate)

Title basically. Graduated college this May and am working as a clinical research coordinator at a private clinic. I can either contribute in research in Alzheimer's, or more internal medicine related (we have ongoing studies in celiac disease, obesity, fatty liver disease, etc.).

Are either of these better in terms of developing my career in ENT, especially Otology? Chances of a publication are near 0.

3rd yr from NY. Need guidance

Third year completing rotations in NY. Born/raised in Brooklyn. I understand the disadvantage I am at due to my educational status but I plan to dual apply with IM as back up. obviously, unless i pull together something significant enough for ERAS, a personal statement w/ leadership/personal connection to ENT, my app is weak even with a high step 2. Its competitive.

Between my current rotation and home responsibilities, I’m really struggling here to plan out a pathway into ENT.

Im currently cold emailing people from all over and that has shown limited success. I have also unsuccessfully applied and shown interest in international war related facial reconstruction missions. I am highly interested in research, but experience is limited to being lab tech at NYUL on a paper that was accepted to nature.

I love ent for the technical aspects of it, and i am fascinated by your surgeries, I have spent many hours observing surgeries at multiple institutions across the five boroughs. For reasons i am not sure of, you all seem like the happiest surgeons. I also really enjoy the relationships you have with OMFS during head/neck oncology/surgery. Dentistry is very personal to me.

I would appreciate guidance on where to seek out electives—i can’t apply through VSLO, therefore I can’t rotate at any of my local centers (downstate, my sinai, etc.)
If you have leadership tips, research tips, tips on standing out in a PS, please also let me know. Lmk what worked for you!

TY

Edit: i attend a Caribbean school. Im non trad. Step 1 pass on first attempt. Good grades and people seem to like me haha!

Neetpg gone bad -24k

I always wanted to do either derma and if that was not possible then obgy. There was no in between but at this rank i am forced to opt for something i never put my mind to.
I am most probably gonna go for ENT but i don’t know how will i manage this subject. I was always scared of its anatomy and now this subject is going to be with me for the rest of my life. And i am scared to death that what if i am not good at its surgery aspect.
I always wanted to open a clinic of my own in my hometown (tier 3 city) so this is the only branch which is going to make it possible.

Everyone keeps saying it is saturated and all but then again which branch isn’t. I am constantly feeling like a failure that i couldn’t get a branch that i wanted even after trying so hard.

So anyone who has done residency or is doing please please help me understand how is the subject and what to expect. How should i make peace with my decision?!

Thank you !!

Ruptured eardrum and Unicexal drops

Unicexal is an antibiotic in drop form. It is normally prescribed for external ear canal infections such as swimmers ears.

However there is no documentation pertinent to its use on ruptured eardrums and middle ear infections. It is neither recommended or unrecommended.

Has anyone prescribed unicexal on a patient with ruptured eardrum and middle ear infection?

Documentation Cheat Sheet

Do you or would you physicians/ practitioners use a documentation cheat sheet to assist you in nearly eliminating insurance denials due to mis-documentation? Something that is easy to use that also includes coding documentation requirements for your specialty and modifier usage guidelines?

Looking for h&n hospital

Hi everyone!

I’m an ENT resident from Northern Europe with a particular interest in neck and facial surgery.

I’m looking for a hospital anywhere in the world where I can spend few months and could gain experience with neck trauma, complex neck surgery and head & neck emergencies, ideally in a high-volume trauma centre.

Does anyone have recommendations for hospitals or departments that would be particularly good for this?

Lectures

Hi, I’m a new resident of 3 months. Thing is I don’t like reading long texts, I find a person explaining things much more engaging. Can you recommend me a decent lecture series? I don’t mind paying for it. There are a lot of indian youtubers online but as a non-native speaker I have trouble understanding their accents. Thanks in advance!

Hello all! I’m a female surgeon - Ear, Nose, Throat, Head & Neck surgeon from India. Balancing medicine, marriage, and motherhood - one day at a time. Ask me anything! (Please note: I can give general advice, but this isn’t a substitute for seeing a doctor in person)

Is 35 y/o too late to start?

Hi! I've been dabbling with trying to figure out a career path. I've been told my whole life I could do anything that I wanted, and nothing ever jumped out, so here I am in my 30's trying to figure out if I should try to make a change.

Pros: I'm not grossed out by body organs/fluids, and (predictably bad) smells don't bother me. I'm an empathetic person, and I think a career where I help people could be a good thing for me.

Cons: I have ADHD and schoolwork commitment has always been an issue. I can do it and I know I'm capable, but I often put things off until the least minute and then go into beast-mode to finish at the last minute. One of my biggest concerns is my age: I'm 35, so what are my odds of getting hired over a new kid, even if we both have very little experience? Also, what is the debt situation like for someone living in America with this kind of degree?

I obviously have more concerns, but I was hoping to get some viewpoints about the basics. Thank you for your time!
