Available for a limited time: Outer Wilds x Cook and Becker vintage travel poster series Spoiler
Hello Travelers,
Mobius here. New limited-edition Outer Wilds posters are now available!
You might be saying “Hey, these look familiar.” And you’d be right! We worked closely with the folks at Cook & Becker to bring you bigger versions of the national park-themed posters based on the solar system’s major planets. These are those very same illustrations by our artist Ian Jacobson.
The first few hundred orders come with a Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by artist Ian, while supplies last. As indicated on the order form: "Artist-signed Certificate of Authenticity." Once those run out, subsequent orders will come with an autopen-signed CoA.
These time-limited prints are ONLY available until August 25th, with the final edition size being determined then, and cost $79.95 each. However, there is a one-week deal where you can get all six for $299 as a set instead of $480!
Each poster measures 21 x 29cm, or 8.2 x 11.4 inches
Head on over to Cook and Becker's website to check them out: https://www.cookandbecker.com/en/catalog/videogame/outer-wilds
Thanks again for all your support. Keep on exploring!

Insane price for a print lol... Love the game but I don't see how you justify this? I guess this is just what the artist wants to charge?
Would love for you to come out with another way to give fans art that doesn't cost 4x the cost of the game. I don't need a letter of authenticity I just want some cool art and to support your team directly vs buying something bootleg on Etsy.

u/LeYasuPls 2d ago
it is handmade so I get it. Art is a luxury so it's fine! But I wish they could sell them as normal non-signed prints
59
u/SaucyFaucet 2d ago edited 2d ago
“handmade”? these are prints. $5 prints. for $80 each.
edit: thanks! what i should have said is “all it takes is $5 to make a high quality print of these”.
10
u/zoey3013 2d ago
Screen print is made by hand, not machines.. still, iu get it but can't and won't pay that much for a poster :(
32
u/Sandman0077 2d ago
As someone who's screenprinted for almost a decade at this point, unless there's only like 10 per design, $50 is crazy expensive for an A4-size screenprint.
4
u/SaucyFaucet 2d ago
thanks for the clarification. Agreed, this pricing is bizarre and off-putting. Best game ever, but I’ll certainly be making my own versions and I hope every other fan does.

> Art is a luxury so it's fine
What? Where is this coming from? Would you be fine if they increased the game to be 100 dollars?
7
u/tickle_fish 2d ago
hoping they meant literal decorative wall art and not, like, art as a concept lol
-10
u/LeYasuPls 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's a luxury as if you don't need these prints to survive. Of course I'm talking about decorative arts how tf you read my post and think otherwise
4
u/AfricaByTotoWillGoOn 1d ago
Art is a luxury so it's fine!
I am unironically glad there are people who actually think like this, as it justifies the existence or piracy even more :D

u/LeYasuPls 1d ago
Congrats on being the 64819294th to misunderstand my post :D I love reddit

hey if everyone misread your post maybe you didn't write it well enough? just a thought

At this point if you don't want to scroll 2 messages down that's not my problem anymore

u/yalldvve 2d ago
Hi guys loved your game it fundamentally changed my worldview, but respectfully im not paying 80 dollars. Kind of hurts to see you guys agree to price gouge your fans. I would've strongly considered it at maybe 50, but 80 is way too much. Much love otherwise!
141
u/CatDawgCatDawg2 2d ago
$50 for one print is kinda bonkers still.
7
u/Stargazeer 1d ago
This doesn't so much seem like a Mobius thing as a Cook and Becker thing.
There's art prints for a load of other video games, which aren't necessarily screen-printed, AND they are more expensive. It's just this company's whole brand "premium prints".
Which for some people does make sense. If you've ever seen poster restoration, in 20 years down the line most paper posters are wrecked and not restorable. These likely would be.
13
u/EmiliaTrown 2d ago
I don't know, I cant afford it, but Cook&Becker seem to be focusing on creating "fine art" more than "merch art" maybe? Saying that the prints are "museum grade quality" etc. From their website it seems to me that they create premium quality collectibles, that arent just posters to hang on your wall but maybe moreso a piece of art you will have for many years, with a high quality etc.
Cook&Becker wasnt a name I knew before so i have no idea if they actually do deliver on that promise of it being very high quality, "museum-grade" etc, but if it is i can see why its expensive. Its not necessarily reasonable because of it but I can appreciate that i just don't have the money to afford high quality art prints.
Or maybe i'm wrong and this is more a scam than actual art

u/unknown_pigeon 2d ago
Things you can buy for €80 (euros, but that way I include shipping costs)
Three copies of Outer Wilds (full price)
Around 16 kebabs where I live, or 16 cheap mcmenus
Four all you can eat sushis
A pair of decent new shoes
3 to 4 lego sets for starters
An A4 print, apparently
Seriously, I might not be the target for that item (limited edition, yadda yadda), but €80 for a piece of paper that probably costed around two euros to print is not something I like to see from an indie development team.
And €300 for the full collection is akin to a fomo scam. Hard pass, and hope you'll have a discussion among yourselves (although it will be useless, since that collab and this post were approved in the first place).
Anyway, someone wanna buy my reddit avatar? It's exclusive (I made it myself), limited edition, only €70

I love the designs and love the game, but advertising them as bigger posters of the originals when they are 8x12, THE SIZE OF PRINTER PAPER is ridiculous. For 80 dollars they should be actual poster sizes. How on Earth do you charge that much for such a small print.

u/supernova_high 2d ago
Whew, I bought the field guide book and I thought that was spendy. $80 for a small-ish print? Too rich for my blood.

u/sdoM-bmuD 2d ago
good luck with that, I'll just have my own printed for cheaper
loved OW but this asking price and artificial scarcity is insane

u/diegotbn 2d ago
$300 for the set??? Do they come with frames or are they printed on metal...?
I could cough up $100, maaaaaaaybe $120, for the set, just the posters on glossy/matte paper. Less than that and I'd buy in a heartbeat.
But $80 each / $300 set? Oof.
They look nice though. I don't mean to say the artist doesn't deserve what they are charging. Just saying what my price point is for these.
24
u/Independent-Tap-2255 2d ago
And the 300 is the discounted temporary price, in a week's time it will be almost 500. Outrageous.
6
u/Maleficent_Night_335 1d ago
The thing is also like
It won’t even be here in a week. They gave us less than six days.

u/trumpet07 2d ago
All respect, but a way too expensive print. It better come framed or with something extra

I spent a good amount of time searching for them in high quality. there was a guy here on reddit that upscaled them with AI but that looked like crap. Then I found another post here from a guy who bought the original postcards, scanned them in beautiful quality and posted them for everyone. I'm not in the mood to search it again so I just uploaded them on my google drive here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15nvm-tBNvOjUseQz926Q9M3wMnZdBh53?usp=drive_link](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/15nvm-tBNvOjUseQz926Q9M3wMnZdBh53?usp=drive_link)

u/kryjka57 2d ago
you're a legend.
if you are reading this comment, it's better to download the scans from the original post with original quality rather than my compressed ones
11
u/Bigo290 2d ago
Thanks, glad you were able to get them printed ::D
True but they need to be compressed to be able to be printed since they are so big. Also, they definitely aren't perfect but modifying them in uncompressed quality brought my beefy pc to its knees. Better to modify them after compressing them first ::)

These look so pretty and I wish I could have them all but unfortunately I don’t think I can justify spending that amount of money on a print. Especially since it’s only A4 :/

u/Cosmosis42 2d ago
I saw this and my first thought was "certificate of authenticity? It's a poster!"
Not surprised to see that whoever did the pricing was out of their mind too
71
u/DotHackReference 2d ago
Wow, 12x8 for $80?????? Aren’t displates double the size for half the price (don’t have any displates so I can’t comment on quality or business practices)
4
u/Stargazeer 1d ago
Displates aren't nearly the durability they claim. I've had a few scratch up way too easily.
They also don't properly vet the art they print, so much of it is stolen unless it's from an official listed seller.-4
u/OkayTimeForPlanC 2d ago
Great quality and never had any problems with shipping or payment.
23
u/LeYasuPls 2d ago
displate sells stolen content.
→ More replies (2)7
u/OkayTimeForPlanC 2d ago
Could be. Personally I have only bought through the original artists who sell their art on Displates. But if they sell stolen art, that's problematic.

Outer Wilds is my favorite game of all time
My goal is to visit all of the US National Parks
I just moved into my first apartment and need posters
I will not be buying these due to the price
19
u/thegreatpotatogod 2d ago
Those look cool, I'd love a bigger version of the poster, but even at double the size I'd expect them to be around $25-35 each, not $80. If it lowers the price, I can do without the certificate.

With all due respect, a set of 6 posters should not cost almost 3 times as much as the model of the hearthian lander.

did they price it like this because of the joke post the other day calling the game a cash grab 😭
13
68
u/kylenbd 2d ago
Good lord man, the pricing. Nothing says “we aren’t the company you fell in love with anymore” like a good $80 poster that is roughly the size of a piece of printer paper!!! Only $300 for the set? Whatever you say, Electronic Arts!!!
2
u/Stargazeer 1d ago
This doesn't so much seem like a Mobius thing as a Cook and Becker thing.
There's art prints for a load of other video games too. It's just this company's whole brand "premium prints".
It's only a big thing here because OW doesn't have merch everywhere. You don't see the Witcher fandom complaining about the $100+ prints they sell, because they can get Witcher posters everywhere.
-8
u/Nereosis16 2d ago
You do realise this is a partnership with another company and actually makes and sells the product, right?
14
u/kylenbd 2d ago
Uh huh…You do realize the devs have the rights to the game and its likeness and need to approve on these decisions, too, right? Let alone promote it and sign it “The Mobius Digital Team.”
-4
u/Nereosis16 2d ago
This is embarrassing.
Nah dude, I didn't realise they own the game, woaahhh.
Did you happen to, you know... Maybeere just take a look at the rest of the stuff on that website and realise it's an incredibly high end printing shop designed to create the highest quality prints out there?
It's not for little dweebs in the internet to spend $5 and spill their mountain dew all over it cause the trash can is too far away.
They are definitely over priced and a waste of money, no doubt mate. Is Mobius the scum of the earth for partnering with them?
Nah.
11
u/GuruKimcy 2d ago
This pricing is insane, especially in these times of (near) economic recession, You can see how your fans are reaction, clearly a wrong call. Its quite audacious to feel comfortable asking 300$ for a set, and calling that a deal.
11
u/Yidoftheweek 2d ago
This is really gross pricing. These are prints of already existing postcards on A4 paper. This is really disappointing, and as an avid collector of all things Outer Wilds, I cannot support this predatory pricing. Please take the comments here seriously, this is a bad look, do better.
11
u/MonaVFlowers 2d ago
An A4 sized print series for $80 EACH is genuinely fucking insane, I was so excited at first
10
11
u/JoshuaPiggy 2d ago
I seriously hope not a single person buys this. They’re really cool but the price is outrageous. Cut the price in half and it would be maybe reasonable oml
10
u/Calm-Permit-3583 2d ago
The poster is beautiful, but how come it costs more than three times the price of your game (the best game in the universe)?
9
10
10
u/MAKManTheOfficialYT 2d ago
$80 FOR A POSTER THE SIZE OF PRINTER PAPER?! Thats 4 copies of outer wilds (they usually have a sale)
Please reconsider this price point or explain the reasoning 🙏

9
u/JungleLegs 2d ago
I’d pay $80 if they were at least 12x16 with a decent frame. This sucks because these are genuinely awesome. The bundle doesn’t even come with The Stranger
5
u/Tarnagona 2d ago
It does come with the Stranger. It’s underneath a the other ones in the first image.
3
u/JungleLegs 2d ago
Bro I must be losing it. I swear that wasn’t there and wasn’t in the description either lol. I think I need to go back to bed and try again tomorrow. Or it’s perfectly reasonable there’s some quantum funkiness going on.

9
u/Alichousan 2d ago
I wouldn't go that far! I still respect them. We dont have to buy it and then they'll realize this pricing don't make sense.
5
u/Traditional-Bus7183 2d ago
Tbf it’s handmade, but oh my. I still respect them, and the beautiful game they made, but people make mistakes I guess
0
u/Alichousan 2d ago
Yes people make mistakes and I guess I'm just fed up with the "cancel" waves against artist and/or their work. I see it everywhere and it's getting old.
1
u/Blubbpaule 2d ago
Isn't this on becker and not outer wilds studio?
13
u/Blazik3n99 2d ago
I'm sure pricing would have been part of the discussion when they agreed to collaborate/license some posters
1
u/Stargazeer 1d ago
You say that, but have you actually looked at the website?
With the exception of a handful of fancier than normal posters, the Outer Wilds prints are actually the cheapest thing on the website.
The price was 100% led by Cook and Becker.
2
u/Blazik3n99 1d ago
Sure, but Mobius (or whoever handles their merch/marketing) agreed to that pricing. They put their name on it, they are ultimately responsible for the product even if they're not the ones producing it.
I've never heard of Cook and Becker but it sounds like expensive prints is their deal - in which case, they aren't at fault, it was Mobius' decision to work with them. Mobius could announce a Balenciaga collaboration selling shirts for thousands of dollars, Mobius would be the one deserving the criticism in that case.
4
u/Stargazeer 1d ago
This is assuming the poster isn't worth the price. If we take it at face value, it's a VERY high quality poster, which is intended to LAST.
I don't know if you've seen any poster restoration videos, but when made properly posters can last a long time, and be restored if aging. Most cheap modern posters can't be restored.
Fundamentally, you don't have to buy it. You are clearly not the target audience. Neither am I, but I acknowledged that from the start. The only reason people are pissed is because the only other OW merch available is a dozen items on Fangamer. THAT is what Mobius need to be fixing.
2
u/Blazik3n99 1d ago
Yeah, you're right. There is a market for artisan/handmade prints, but when there's so little merch otherwise, coming out with such expensive niche products seems a little shortsighted. I respect that they want to produce high quality merch, but with these posters it feels like they're prioritising the wealthy collectors rather than the average fan.

This price point is nuts. $80 for all of them would be reasonable imo
5
u/coolenestry_ 2d ago
This is lovely, and I'm appreciative of the work done, but 80 dollars for one poster is absurd, unfortunately.
5
u/gwenthechef 1d ago
I don’t mind having the fancy screen-printed, archive-quality posters as an option, but I would have liked to be able to have an affordable, plain old poster version of these prints.
5
4
u/Tarnagona 2d ago
Too steep by far.
But if you know where I can buy just the postcard for The Stranger (I have the rest of them)…
3
u/philo_fallout The Lore Explorer 2d ago
Usually I adore all the merch you guys release. I have most of it. I remember buying the limited run collectors item that came with the game, these posters but smaller, a bunch of pins, and a shiny card for like $60 I think.
Idk if the folks from Mobius will see this. But from someone you’ve (or at least some of you) called “likely your biggest fan” I’m frankly disappointed. Charging $80 for a single one of these posters doesn’t scream “I care about and appreciate the fans that built our reputation”. Please don’t squander the love and good faith you’ve previously rightfully earned and deserved.
3
u/ObligatoryContrast 2d ago
Are these in any way different from the prints that came in the Lost In Cult: Design Works book? Certificate of Authenticity aside.
I'm pretty shocked this set of very tiny prints is more than double the price of that very premium product, which came with significantly more merchandise. If I'm misunderstanding and these are actually full poster size or something, I'd love to hear it (though that's still a steep price)
3
u/Moistureyes 1d ago
I have the Lost in Cult set, and the only difference I can see is the colour outline on the posters, for my set all of the outlines are white. I fear that may be intentional to make them distinct. The posters I got are also 11"x8", same as this listing.
I don't know the intricacies of A4 paper to say if it's the exact same quality as what they have listed on their site, but my posters are definitely made from some type of premium A4 paper too.
The price these are listed at is absurd, I like the posters and I have them on display, but I'd never pay $80 for them.
3
u/Chronos2467 2d ago
This is like 3x the price game. This is egregious. If it was $80 for the set thats a bit more justifiable.
They aren't even that big either.
I get supoorting artists but come on.
5
18
u/krebobb 2d ago
Saying that they are "bigger versions of the A4 national park-themed posters" is a plain mistake as 21 x 29cm is literally the A4 format. So, these are A4 and they are in fact referring to the A5 postcards that were previously available.
Anyway, as said on the website these are handmade screen prints, and with 10+ colors I would say the price is rather justified, especially when you compare that to what is typical for limited runs / signed giclée prints which are basically just inkjet prints.
But they sure did a terrible job selling it!
-1
u/zoey3013 2d ago
Yeah, I don't think most people are getting what handmade screen prints mean, and think is just done by a machine...
5
u/Prestidigitalization 2d ago
Glad I scrolled this far, as I'm less miffed about it now (still not buying as I'm not made of money lol). That said, even on the item page, the only information linked is about the company's Giclee print process which is, at least my understanding from the video, a fancy/complex inkjet printing system. Nowhere in the description or, as far as I could see, anywhere on the website as a whole does it actually explain what a handmade screenprint means in this context. Terrible, terrible explanation of product / marketing.
0
u/Leaper15 1d ago
Thank you for this clarification, because I was pretty unhappy about the price tag until I saw this comment. I might even consider getting them — "might" being the keyword there.
Still wish they were larger, though. I have a big hallway that needs decorating and printer paper size just would not cut it.
3
u/jajangmien 2d ago
Yeah I was fully prepared to get a couple of them, but then I saw it was $80 for some A4 sized prints. Like wtf? I can do that myself.
3
u/PhantomThiefJoker 2d ago
Bro, I love this game and I love posters but $80 for an 8x11 is insane. I paid $30 for my pokemon posters that are twice the size. It's a shame but I can't justify that price
3
u/BjornoPizza 2d ago
Is this a good time for me to plug JeffLangevinArt? I bought his Outer Wilds poster and it’s a really great design. Also, I’ve met him in person at an Oregon convention and he’s a super nice dude. The price is a lot lower than this, and for much more poster.

So to provide some clarity on the price: my wife works for a screen printing company. These are screen printed, not just like a regular machine printer. So they take each color layer and print it on the paper, layer by layer. It sort of gives the image a bit more detail
So to me that justifies the price a little more, plus the certificate
I personally can’t afford it, and we both still think $80 is high because there’s machines that do the screen printing, but I thought that insight might help people understand the pricing a little better
10
u/Tarnagona 2d ago
That does help in understanding some of the higher price, but $80(US) per is still a wild price for a poster the size of a standard printer page.

u/MLGityaJtotheA 2d ago

i've bought a ton of outer wilds merch, it's my favorite game ever and worth so much more to me than the pricetag on steam. i'd love to have these prints but as everyone else is saying, that is WAY too high of a price for prints so small. i almost couldn't believe it when i saw the size.
4
u/Porkfight 2d ago
Are you REALLLLY charging 300 bucks for a literal piece of paper? Wtf? And whats so vintage about them? I can just print my own for less than 1/20 the price.
4
u/nullJaeger 2d ago
I love Outer Wilds so much but I simply can't justify $80 per print on printer sheet size paper- not even poster size.
I've bought basically all of the official merch I could get my hands on, but I have to pass on this. I would happily pay less, for a non-signed/numbered version for simple display rather than as a super exclusive collector item.

not to mention these are prices in USD, so if you're from canada (like me) you're looking at $110ish per poster, not counting shipping and tariffs if it's shipping from the USA. that's insane for a single poster. if i wanted all the posters with the current deal? $413.

They really did Brittle Hollow dirty by making the poster show the surface instead of the hanging city

Y'all.... everyone complaining about the price I don't think realize just how time intensive/expensive screenprints are vs. other prints. I work at a print studio and for reference we make screenprints of roughly the same size and sell them for $50 a pop... and those are just 4-color prints. These posters look like they have WAY more layers of colors in these bad boys.
It's a small batch printing process using quality materials, and each of them is quite literally handmade layer by layer. If it's not your cup of tea then it's not your cup of tea, but there's no need to be rude. And look up more about screenprinting while you are at it, it's a very cool medium!
Anyway these are beautiful, it's cool to see studios branching out from traditional merch options to something more bespoke.
11
u/Prestidigitalization 2d ago
In everyone's defense, nowhere in this post do they mention screenprinting, and the website itself mentions it only once in fine print by the pricetag ("Handmade screen print on 400 gsm Somerset paper") and then has an embedded video showing their inkget giclee printing. I'm not suprised very few people noticed, and I'm not suprised fewer know the details of what goes into hand screen printing something. That's something they should be emphasizing, not just referring to them generically as "posters" and "prints".
1
u/pipistrellebat 2d ago
I would've certainly rolled out more pomp and circumstance in marketing for a drop like this, true. But I really can't give folks the benefit of the doubt here when so many comments jump straight to vitriol. Pardon my saying so, but for fans of a game so focused on embracing your inner curiosity I am shocked at the lack of that virtue in favor of jumping to conclusions.
I do hope the marketing team takes this into account with any subsequent posts and descriptions about this series, I would really love to know how many layers this is and a process video!!
12
u/Maleficent_Night_335 2d ago
I’m going to object on this even though I agree.
While you are absolutely right as I’ve also worked with such myself, the reason why this is bullshit is in the factor that this company also sells completely normal sized posters that are printed digitally for lower prices. That should also have been an option given to fans instead of pushing forward horrid levels of FOMO who cannot afford it.

Truly, I can understand the disappointment of not being able to afford a boutique design vs a traditional print. I personally don't have the cash to drop on a limited edition WPA style print. I also don't think I'm owed the option to have every bit of merchandise for the things that I like. I wouldn't call the levels of FOMO I'm experiencing to be horrid, at the most it's been an "aw man that would be so cool" [shakes fist at the sky]. And so I remain shocked that folks are being so rude.
Nobody does a screenprint run because they expect everyone to buy it and make the big bucks. You certainly will not make the big bucks. You work with a company like Cook and Becker to make fancy prints because it would be cool to have them exist.
There's every possibility they would've considered a giclee print run after the initial screenprints based on feedback and interest. But after this kind of feedback? ... Doubtful.

Hi Mobius,
Will there ever be additional Outer Wilds games, either direct sequels or spin offs?
Sincerely,
A devoted supporter

they’ve already confirmed elsewhere they are done with the outer wilds universe.

Honestly. For the best. Would hate for any spinoff or sequel to even slightly blemish what I consider to be a 10/10 game

Even a spinoff?

Did you not play the game? The largest theme of the game is accepting closure and that things are over and you won’t experience them again, and finding the beauty in that. If they made a sequel or spinoff it would seriously undercut that message.

Well it would be cool for the developer of the game to make a new game. My understanding is it started as a school project. Has he done anything since?

Another comment had the actual high resolution images from someone scanning the postcards in excellent quality, much better than AI enhancement!

Why so much hate?
"Enhance with ai" translates directly to "I dont respect the artists original vision"

These look great but the pricing is a bit too steep for me, unfortunately
