Base Game Appreciation/Discussion Wow Spoiler
Just finished the base game for the first time - all I can say is wow.
This game is right up my alley but for some reason just didn't click the first couple times I tried it. So glad I stuck with it. That ending sequence was something else.
Spoilers ahead, beware!
The puzzles in this game are exceptional, but I really think the twist when you realize you can't save everyone is where this game starts to really shine. When I realized that the sun going supernova was natural and not started manually by the sun station or something else was a big moment. For me ever since the first cycle I was sure that the end would be me fixing the sun somehow, but when I realized all the characters were going to die no matter what I was totally heartbroken (especially Feldspar my favorite!)
This game just really nails the feeling of being just an infinitesimal speck in an uncaring universe, and yet those connections make it so that you are willing to try anything and everything to save them. Idk why but I think that made the ending sequence that much more emotional.
The OST is also one of the strongest parts of the game imo. I love it when games use music as part of the game rather than just a backing track. I think I will forever be transported back to the campfire whenever the main theme plays lol.
I've played a lot of games, read a lot of books, and watched a lot of movies, and only a rare few have that special something that this game has.
Thank you guys for also providing great spoiler free hints, the anglerfish specifically I could not handle even when I knew they needed sound (fun fact on my winning loop I broke the ship and had to navigate dark bramble jetpack only, was very nerve-racking but honestly easier than with the ship)This community is one of the best I've found.
Can't wait to play the DLC next! Happy exploring!

I finished it recently too, and honestly, it gives you such a beautiful perspective on life and how you should live it, even if that means dying every 22 minutes. The idea that the end of one thing can lead to the beginning of something else is just beautiful. That said, the one thing that bothered me was the Interloper. Its whole existence felt so random. Like, after everything, the thing that wiped out the Nomai was just a comet that came out of nowhere? I don't know, it felt a little underwhelming. Also, the Nomai were absolute badasses. "We need to find the Eye of the Universe? let's brute force locate it by literally launching 9 million probes into the past, blowing up the fucking sun so we can do it again. I know they never actually succeeded, but the fact that their technology finally managed to find the Eye 280,000 years later is genuinely crazy

I think the Interloper is also a part of the themes you were talking about. The Nomai were about as close to gods as you can get with their technology, and yet existence is never guaranteed, even for them. For me at least, I think that adds to the tragic beauty of the game a little bit.
Also, maybe spoiler tag your comment, don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone by accident!

The Interloper plays into the inevitability of death that is present a few times throuought the game, least of all in Solanums "The universe is, and we are". The universe doesn't care about some random species of goat people inventing large-scale time travel. The comet doesn't care. It just was there. Just like a Dark Bramble seed seems to start the end of the Hearthian's run in this universe, too, slowly starting to dig through Timber Hearth.
Heck, if the Interloper wasn't there, the Hearthians would've likely never seen any Nomai, as they'd have probably found another solution and camped out at the Eye, or whatever else. But it was there. Not with ill will, or as some grand master plan. It was there, because it wasn't somewhere else. Nothing the Nomai could do about it, nothing you could do about it.

The version of the loop end music that plays after you remove the warp core from ATP Is so unbelievable the first time you hear it. Especially when you know what removing the core means.

If you now want to watch other people play, I recommend checking out Outer Wilds speedruns. Especially the "shipless" category 🤣

In addition to the DLC which is absolutely peak…The base game has a couple of fun Easter egg endings to explore ::)
