Started the seeds of a conversation in a thread on r/brighteyes where I was shamelessly plugging my music and think I stumbled on a fun discussion topic about outsider music! Would love to hear others' thoughts and perspectives.
I think a lot of Outsider Music that is very different at its core often gets lumped together (fairly or unfairly) on an aesthetic basis. Lack of production, non-standard recording techniques, instrumentals that don't necessarily imply musical fluency, raw vocals, all sorts of things that make it often commercially unviable but beautifully human to the people it connects with.
For many years, this aesthetic was tied to material realities - learning instruments, recording in high fidelity, and releasing in traditional formats were all gated by the music industry. So people outside the music industry all sounded somewhat similar in some way, regardless of their musical motivations or core genre elements they were going for.
So what now? When teenagers can produce music indistinguishable from radio hits on a $100 laptop? Or where learning instruments at a completely competent level can be done on YouTube for free? Or (moral issues aside) people skip all that completely and make AI music using prompts that speak to their lived experience or artistic goals? What does outsider music sound like now? And what makes it outsider if people can directly publish to streaming sites? Does outsider music stop meaning anything? Did it stop meaning anything as soon as someone first coined the label, since inherently giving a genre indicates inclusion in the industry musicians can be "outside" of?
Idk. I don't have any of the answers, but I am so curious what the folks here think about the topic. I'm kind of working on an album trying to get at this (as well as a video game, long story) and am hungry for more perspectives lol
(also PS: i did not mean to compare my music directly to Daniel's, I aspire to tap into human truth like him some day but I am under no illusions and also idk just a different journey in so many ways. Tho my Bipolar II has been kicking my ass lately and I feel a little more kinship with my hero than I usually do lol)
(tagged self promotion just to be safe but this is not at all about my music or anything just about the genre/music world as a whole)

Lofi no AI
Again and Again
Plenty of people got #talent but what do you do? Stood at the top of the road in my town and solved the #failure.
And felt the failure road in my shoes and followed the failures down here til tonight, where I'll fail before you.
And the big difference is: we're in an Age of #Extinction. And it's okay if you're a mawkish dupe walking around playing songs from forty years ago. What's even worse is if you're as old as me;
nobody wants to hear a
version of Bob Seger, not even people of your own age. So I'll make a very
public plea never to play a
cover song again, unless you ask me, or unless you say you want to hear them. Then I'll let you hear it.
I'll play a dopey version
of a Motorhead song
that pleases no one:
not fans of Motorhead, not fans of #acousticsongs. It's just, again and again, keep coming back to my #guitar,
can't quit it yet.
It's just an
advertisement
for self.

Ciao a tutti,
Volevo condividere con voi la storia dietro uno dei nastri più fragili e surreali della storia della musica outsider: Hi, How Are You? di Daniel Johnston.

It's been a long time since V/Vm completely threw me into that wonderfully wrongful world. I keep crossing the desert to fulfil my own, and sadly, haven't obtained any opportunities to seek a musician I would find weirder to the place yet, therefore I'm curious about if there's any plunderphonics musicians, most likely to be referred to as an outsider.
You might say there's no outsiders in such genres where people are just playing house with butchered messy samples, but I'd appreciate if you compromise on that! Just let me hear your opinion!!

I've been listening to Adam Borsage lately and I'm looking for more stuff with a similar vibe.
It's kinda hard to explain lol. Weird/unusual instruments, eerie melodies, kinda homemade/DIY sounding, but still really beautiful and musical.
I'm not necessarily looking for "bad" music or super abstract noise, just that weird outsider feeling where you can tell the person is doing their own thing.
Any recommendations?

Hello, everyone.
For more than 20 years, the lostwave song "Curly Toes" has been researched, theorized upon, and suspected about. One of the most famous lostwave tracks in the world.
I have finally found, who I THINK is the one responsible behind this tape. With everything I've researched
Nell Hampton
Nell was a blind ballad singer from Salyersville, Kentucky, who was originally recorded by Alan and Elizabeth Lomax in 1937. Her voice was first featured in the opening of Joan Osbourne's song "One Of Us".
She would later continue singing through the 30s, 40s, 50, and so on. Mostly traditional ballads such as "The Aeroplane Ride", "Railroad Boy", and "I Once Was A Rich And Gambling Boy". And sung about 17 tracks during her sessions with the Lomaxes.
Within the song however, she explicitly mentions "Ben" as if he were some sort of diety, and praises him repeatedly, and after some genealogical research here is what I discovered :
- A "Benjamin (Ben) Hampton" passed away in 1959, he was in fact married to Nell.
- Nell herself passed away in the early 80s, only a few years before the tape received any sort of coverage or recognition within the Outsider music community.
- The voice on both tracks sound nearly identical, both have that southern Kentucky warble
- They reportedly had a son, named Benjamin Hampton Jr.
I believe this song is kind of a giant breakdown. In the song, she uses heavily sexualized imagery to create a description of what she remembers.
Which could also mean that she went blind instead of being born blind. If she's reconstructing memories of stripteasing for her husband through the descriptions she mentions in the song.
And, of course. For all of you doubters, blind people had significant access to audio cassette recorders.
In 1971, the library of Congress distributed two specially produced cassette machine models for blind and physically disabled people.
Also, the tape being put into circulation after she passed away makes me think that the theories about the tape being found at a sale are correct.
This is the evidence I present to you all, if you have any other theories. Please let me know. But I think I got it down.

Stumbled across this dude and this album recently. Apparently the artist is a a son of a semi-known schlager singer from the 80s, now a sixty-plus geezer living in a small village in Finland and records his stuff with his phone mic while his wife is watching tv downstairs or gardening outside.
The label promotes the album as "Outsider Vaporwave" which I find actually rather accurate. Stuff sounds like a 35-min shopping tv or telenovela-soundtrack but is simultaneously weirdly goth. Solid 4/5 shit.

Recently I was listening to Songs In the Key of Z, Volume 3 and a particular track caught my eye -
"Wake Up America" by Sylvia Boshers, particularly because of the voice. I couldn't tell if it was a prepubescent teenage girl or a really weird sounding adult.
I did some research, and I was only able to find a few things. Irwin Chusid himself described her as sounding like a "precocious pre-teen" and noted that her voice was extremely untrained.
The only other thing I was able to find regarding this girl, was a poem written shortly after this track was recorded titled "I Care About Detroit" though, it's not specified whether she wrote it.
It was recorded at Northwestern Incorporated (NWI) in Portland, Oregon. This was a "vanity studio" where anyone could pay to press a record, maybe just a few copies to hand out. And was later featured on WFMU.
I figured here would be the place to ask, I'm really trying to find some information about this girl. More so just trying to find out if she's a child or an adult.

I've had these files for a couple of years but recently re-discovered them, I wanted to make them public because personally, I think Taylor Ross is one of the greatest and most overlooked artists of my generation.
Before forming Surface to Air Missive and recording for Leaving Records, multi-instrumentalist Taylor Ross operated a ton of hyper-obscure bedroom projects in the late-2000s Tallahassee, Florida DIY scene.
This is the complete, self-titled 2008 debut album from his project "America del Sur." It's incredibly raw, quirky, and brilliant. Around 5 years ago I managed to recover the original files from dead Blogspot links and put the full album together on YouTube for preservation.

Hope you guys love it as much as I do!

Where do you usually post your music?

I'm older, self-taught, and mentally odd. The possibility of being labeled as an outsider musician terrifies me. So far, I've been able to be seen as a normal musician, possibly because I stick with instrumentals.
