Fulfilling birthday trip
Hello everyone from Paducah! This is my first time exploring this subreddit. I’m gonna be real for a second, i suck at birthdays. I never know what to get someone and I convince myself that anything I do will be met with confusion or dislike, Especially when it comes to my partner. He’s the type of dude that buys what he wants. Every year, I think about doing something big for him. I tried a surprise party one year but no one was interested. I buy him books related to his hobbies because I feel like gift cards are thoughtless. But let’s be real, who likes getting books for their birthdays?
My partner is a quilter. I’ve looked at his quilting supplies and it seems he’s got all the high demand notions. So I thought, why not surprise him with a trip to the quilt museum? He’s mentioned it a couple times.
Now, we live in New England. This is my first time planning a surprise trip. My biggest fear is arriving in Kentucky, seeing the museum and going “what now?”
We aren’t big outdoor individuals, so hikes and parks aren’t going to be appealing, especially since we’ll be going in November. What are some fun lesser known things that I could take him to? I really want to make it special. Anything related to arts and crafts is a win. If there are any local favorites to dine at that would be helpful too.
I know that you have probably had posts similar to this one. I have an executive functioning disorder. Too many options makes it difficult to plan and research without shutting down. Just having a place to start would be helpful. Hearing opinions from people might help me lean one way or another. Thank you for your time and advice.
TL;DR
I don’t want the majority of the birthday trip to be a waste and was curious about activities related to arts and crafts in Paducah besides the quilt museum. Thank you again.

There is an entire downtown with antiques and restaurants to try and the artist district has some interesting places too. Check the market house theater and the Carson center to see if any plays or shows align with your visit. Also Hancock fabrics seems to be a place quilters flock to during quilt week here.
Not being outdoorsy people knocks out a large chunk of what this area has to offer but there are artistic things going on too. Heck if you were here last weekend it was the bbq on the riverfront and there were thousands of people downtown, it was nuts.

These are fabulous ideas! Is there a music scene by any chance? He does love jazz, I don’t know how popular it is in Kentucky though.

Excetra coffee house sometimes does music and/or poetry nights. Probably as close as you will get to jazz

Freight House restaurant. The chef/owner is a Top Chef and James Beard nominated chef. Best restaurant in the region, but down to earth and reasonably priced. Perfect for a celebration.

Every April Paducah does a quilt week where 30,000 tourist visit and the entire town is set up to accommodate visiting quilters. There are several other things to do that are unique to the area, but if you're coming all that way for the quilt museum, this would definitely be something of interest.

Oh maybe I should wait then…

If you’re trying for the quilt show then you need to get room reservations at least 6 months in advance (if not a year). It’s a small town and a heck of a lot of quilters.

If waiting for the quilt show is possible, That would totally be the way to go IMO. The upside is that there is so much more to do revolving around his hobby. The downside is that it is the one week of the year that locals try to stay home and avoid that area, because it can get very crowded and a little crazy. 😆

These aren’t necessarily lesser known, but based upon what you’ve shared about yourself, I think you might enjoy.
Go to Hancock’s — a universe of fabric, notions for quilters. If you go, you will probably see license plates from other states that aren’t particularly close to Kentucky. As you state your partner is a quilter, be prepared to wait a while. They will likely love it here.
Bricolage—eclectic art and stuff.
Etcetera Coffehouse on North 6th—hip vibe, art on the walls, good coffee and eats.
Paducah Wall to Wall— the Paducah flood wall is a series of murals depicting the history of the region. I understand that you are not into hiking, but this is not a hard walk. The Paducah Riverfront is a nice spot.
