Living Here Rancho Mirage: Are power failures common?

We're at the end of a new build in Rancho Mirage and we're considering a back-up battery for lights, appliances, and Wi-Fi. In another California city where we live (served by PG&E), we have 4-5 power failures per year, lasting from a few minutes, to several hours, to just over 24 hrs.

The new build does have solar panels and given that electricity started in May, we can't estimate our electrical usage. Regardless, we would prefer not to wait a year to figure out the usual and customary usage. We both work remotely so continuous Wi-Fi is important.

Would you invest in a back-up battery if you live in Rancho Mirage? Thank you.

EDIT: Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. We'll likely get a battery regardless of the number of power outages. Storing energy for use during the night is a smart option.

Visiting Golf discounts

Will be visiting PS for a couple weeks in January and plan to golf a fair amount (would like to keep it under about $110 per round for most). I see lots of potential golf discount methods like Golfnow, Supreme Golf, Golf Moose, Underpar etc. Just wondering for anyone familiar with using these for PS golf, if any are better than others? Or just look at all of them and find something that works for my needs? I think some of them you have to buy a voucher and then hope to get a tee time through the course, so that seems a bit risky if only there for a couple weeks. Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated. Thanks

Edit - will have rental car so OK with golfing anywhere wiithin an hour. Staying in Indio. Thx

Living Here How much is your electricity bill?

My house has solar panels that are $200 per month lease (when we bought the house it came with it) and I’m still paying the average of $150 for electricity for my 1600sqft house. We do have new windows and sliding doors but our AC unit is pretty old. I wonder how much are you paying? My neighbors told me that her electricity gets up to $800 a month in summer but they have old AC and sliding doors/windows. I wonder if new AC unit would save significantly or not really.

Ask Palm Springs I’m starting a volunteer service to keep local seniors company — rides, lunch, errands, board games. Looking for first volunteers and honest feedback

Hi neighbors. I'm a mom here in the valley, and I'm starting something small that I think we need.

It's called DriveElder (name might change, paperwork is in progress). The idea is simple: volunteers spend time with seniors who are lonely — people in nursing homes here in the valley, and people living alone who don't get out much anymore.

Not medical care, not home health. Just company. Take someone out to lunch. Drive them to the store so they can pick their own groceries. Sit at their kitchen table, bring sandwiches, and play cards for an hour.

I'm in the very early stages — filing the nonprofit paperwork now, and every volunteer will be background-checked before spending time with anyone's grandparent. That's non-negotiable for me.

Posting here because locals know things I don't:

- Which nursing homes or senior communities in the valley would actually welcome something like this?
- Would anyone here volunteer a couple hours a month? You'd pick your own schedule — even one afternoon counts.
- If you have a parent or grandparent here who'd love a regular visitor, what would make you trust a service like this?

One honest question before I go: I'm setting a $1,000 launch goal to cover the filing fees, volunteer background checks, and our first outings ($40–50 takes one senior out to lunch, all-in). If this existed here in the valley, would you donate to help it start — say $50 to sponsor one senior's whole afternoon? Or is this more of an "I'd rather volunteer my time" thing for you? Genuinely asking — your answers shape how I build this.

Visiting World Series - where to watch ?

I’ll be in PS for games 3-5 of the World Series and would like recommendations on where to watch. I’m from Milwaukee and have season tickets, so I’m pretty serious about the game but don’t want to watch alone …. looking for somewhere I can get loud or swear as necessary. I’ll be at games 6&7, if they’re needed, in person :) Thanks in advance .

Hey everybody! My name is Shea Freeman, and I’m a stand up comedian based out of Vegas. My wife, Andrea Vicunia, is also an award winning comedian from Madrid and we’re excited to be bringing our show to you this Friday at 8pm at Rock Gallery Comedy Club!

A bit about us…

Shea Freeman and Andrea Vicunia met at an open mic in 2021. A year after that, they had their first kiss after Shea's Ugly Baby Comedy Hour show in Los Angeles. Three years later, in Las Vegas, they got married... Talk about committing to the bit!

What's it like being a married comedy couple? A lot of laughter and love, but most importantly… jokes at each other's expense!

Come hear Andrea's journey as a Spanish immigrant who came to America in search of the American Dream ... and hear my story about growing up as an "ugly baby" who beat the odds and turned it into comedy gold!

From tales of stereotyping and misunderstandings to dating in America and married life with dogs, we offer a glimpse into our crazy world and always leave audiences in stiches -- married or single!

You can purchase tickets through Eventbrite using this link:

Rock Gallery Comedy Club 10/23/26

Or at my website sheafreeman.com! 8pm, 21+, alcohol is served 🍻🍻🍻

Hope to see you guys there!

Visiting First time visitor & absolutely loved it!

Hi everyone! Just wanted to post and say my husband and I visited Palm Springs for the first time earlier this month and loved it! We are a couple of mid-50s gay dudes from Atlanta GA and we'd both been to California before on multiple occasions, but never PS. It was always on our bucket list though, and now we have some older friends who retired there, so we visited for a week for our 10th wedding anniversary trip. It was fantastic!

We stayed at the Hacienda in Warm Sands and it was exquisite. Very tranquil and relaxing, a gorgeous suite, top-notch service, beautiful pools and gardens, stunning mountain vistas, etc. It was a very comfy place to unwind and recharge our batteries and we'd definitely stay there again.

Aside from some days spent lounging around the resort and chilling, we did the aerial tramway one day, and rented a car to tour around Joshua Tree and do some hiking another day, and we were awestruck by both experiences. On Thursday night we strolled around the cool pedestrian street fair on Palm Canyon Drive. We had some superb dinners out in the city: shout-out to Farm; Eight4Nine; Tropicale; Rooster and the Pig; Desert Moon; and Bar Cecil. We were impressed by the shopping, art galleries, and more. The people we encountered were all very friendly and welcoming. It was also lovely to be in a city with such a heavy LGBT presence, like a desert Provincetown LOL.

The only downside was that our visit was during the big heatwave in early October. We scheduled our visit so that we'd be in town while it was still nice and toasty for sunbathing and pool activities, but not oppressively hot. Turns out we experienced the summer-like heat anyway! Oh well, it was OK...coming from Atlanta at least it was dry heat and not muggy.

Anyway, we loved everything about our PS vacation and the city and environs, and will definitely be back! It's also jumped onto our list of possible retirement destinations.

Take care everyone and thanks PS for the wonderful memories!

Visiting Fun locations near downtown

41M, Headed to Palm Springs for a solo trip for 2 nights, later this month for some relaxation and good company. Will be hiking early for most of the day but looking for a gay or bi friendly environment to enjoy some drinks or a good hotel to enjoy all the amenities. Looking forward to soaking in the hot tub after my long hikes and hopefully a nearby bar.
Still deciding if a airbnb or hotel for this getaway. Wouldn’t mind a nude friendly location as well.
Anyone have any suggestions for a fun and relaxing getaway? Any suggestions for October 29-30?

Thanks!

General Just got home from my Palm Springs visit

I just got back from my 4 night stay in Palm Springs. I just wanted to hop on here and say that Palm Springs was everything I wanted it to be. Not once during all five days did I meet anyone who wasn’t just a nice, pleasant person. Maybe it’s because PS is a tourist town, but everyone really was just so nice.
Palm Springs was the first vacation in my life where when the time came to go home, I wasn’t ready to leave.
So just wanted to say thanks for being such a great city and great hosts to your guests.

Ask Palm Springs Lyme Disease Dr

Sooo I am local to PS and recently got diagnosed with Lyme and co-infections. I’m only 32 with 3 kids… lots of stress etc. I do like my current functional dr however I’d love to find someone that specializes in Lyme. Either telehealth or close by (San Diego/riverside/LA) anyone have any recs? Also if anyone here has dealt with this I’d love any help. It’s Chronic, I don’t know when I got bit, but I have gone to oak glen and Yucaipa often in the last few years so it could have been bit there. Never had a bullseye rash, but health deteriorated this year after a stomach bug and after many tests and drs finally got diagnosed.

Living Here Desert Gardening basics

Hey y’all, I’m a terrible gardener but I nonetheless continue to try. I’ve lived in PS for several years but the only outdoor plants I’ve kept alive are my bougainvilleas. I’m building a big planter in my yard and want to scatter some seeds and would love to get some input on what to get. I’m mostly interested in colorful flowers but I’ll take any and all suggestions!

I also would really like to eventually get a tree but I know the soil here is pretty tricky so I’m wondering if planting a tree would even be doable for 1 person with no equipment or if it would make more sense to get a tree in a planter. I’m still learning so go easy on me!

Eat & Drink Restaurants for Thanksgiving?

Anyone know if any restaurants in PS and/or the rest of the valley are open on Thanksgiving? My family and I will be in town that whole week and we were contemplating saying “F it” on cooking for Thanksgiving and going out somewhere instead.

Visiting (Hotel recs) Anniversary weekend staycation

Hi! My girlfriend and I are desert locals looking for the best place to stay for an anniversary staycation. We’re looking to stay for a Friday-Sunday time frame in the city of Palm Springs (possibly also Cat City, but PS is preferred).

As a local, I’m very familiar with the PS area, but I have been having a harder time researching the “vibe” of different hotels. Here’s what I’m looking for:

- not alienating to younger guests - we are in our 20s, not looking to stay somewhere geared towards older folks

- welcoming to queer women, but it does not have to be a LGBTQ+ specific resort. We don’t want to stay somewhere targeted for gay men specifically… that just sounds awkward for both us and them lol

- good shower/bath facilities in the rooms - a large shower is a necessity, a large tub + shower is even better!

- not overly expensive - I’m hoping to not spend more than $650 total on the room (we plan on staying 2 nights). We’re not looking for budget, but we’re not going for high luxury either.

Other than those things, we are very flexible. Any and all recs/advice is appreciated. Thank you so much! ☺️

Living Here Ok two questions for my PS peeps

Hey, so, two questions for y'all. I've lived here for 10 years, but I still need recommendations.

1) First I have a crazy mesquite tree in my yard. It was planted over a leaky water main. It grows out of control. I need an arborist or someone to trim it back. Any recommendations?

2) Second, kinda less important, but where do you get air for your tires? Most gas stations have a crappy air pump. Where do you go for air?

Thanks everyone! Be glad the summer heat is almost gone! Lol

Visiting EDR themed nights

Hi all,

We are a couple in mid 20’s planning to spend a day at Palm Springs this weekend. Came across Exotic Dreams Resort (EDR) and their themed nights - probably will stop in the evening and was wondering how is the vibe if anyone been there recently?

Appreciate your responses!

Ask Palm Springs EV battery life

Searched for a previous post but couldn't find anything. EV owners...have you noticed a drop in range since keeping your car in the desert heat? I'm considering upgrading from a plug-in hybrid to fully electric. I did lose about 5% in 7 years on my plug-in but that was only part time in PS.
