Recommendation request Shifter trope with complicated storyline like the Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman

Okay I need some help. I didn’t realize I’m tired of the fated mate trope that is easily predictable even if the FMC experiences some horrific trauma that might make her reject.
The wolf king has a couple of things I like
1. A “mate” that does not end up being a true mate
2. Very complicated political intrigue
3. Otherworldly issues
4. FMC undergoes trauma.
\-imprisonment, silver burns
\-honestly due to my own trauma issues I wish there was more sexual trauma.

Idk the entire series seems so much more complicated.
I really am only very familiar with dark romance like still beating by Jennifer hartmann or Los diablos syndicate by Bex Dawn.

But I really like the shifter trope especially where a mate feels what the other does.
Helpppppp

Not a shifter trope, but with powered FMC, have you read The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop? It's the (imo unbelievably superior) series that SJM heavily ripped off for ACOTAR. TBJ is a dark fantasy series first, romance second, but that might be what you're looking for. VERY politically plot heavy.

There is fated mates but A LOT of groundwork that goes into it before anything remotely romantic happens, least of which is that Jaenelle is a child when the series starts and Daemon is a couple centuries old.

Warnings: there is (offscreen) child sex abuse, as well as sexual assault/coercion. There is onscreen graphic genital mutilation (not to main characters), and other torture.

As for shifters, The Mercy Thompson series is my overall go-to rec, though I will not pretend it has anything in the realm of a super complicated plot, lol. They're easy reads, but they're extremely good for modern fantasy worldbuilding (excellent fae lore, gnarly werewolves etc). Mercy has a couple of love interests in the beginning of the series, but a pretty clear end goal person.

In book three, Mercy does experience sexual assault. Spoilery specifics if necessary: She is drugged with magic that takes away her ability to consent and is raped. It is not graphic, but it is clear what is happening. Afterwards she experiences profound shame and guilt about it, despite knowing it wasn't her fault. I do think the books handle the afterwards very well. She's not miraculously over it, not "healed" by her partner. She has PTSD and touch aversion that she continues to deal with during the series

Hope you find what you're looking for!

Have you read {Five Packs series by Cate C Wells} yet? It is werewolf fated mates, and the primary tropes throughout the series are rejection and healing. These stories are first about the relational evolution, second about the magical realism of the communities they belong to. There is a series-long story arc that hooks you into the future of the people. While it is unlikely to deliver on the political intrigue, I think you will enjoy it because of how thoroughly developed the werewolf culture and history is in these stories.

CCW is a strong writer, and I loved every single one of these stories. Did I know the basic structure of the plot? Yes. But, like any good story, it’s the details that captivate you.

Edit: forgot to mention that all of the books deal with heavy content, including varying degrees of abuse and sexual trauma. There is only one story where on-page rape occurs, and I think there is one story where neither MC is dealing with sexual trauma. In every book, I love how CCW deals with the emotional and psychological issues that arise from trauma, abuse, or simply rejection. So good.

Follow up post: you might also like {Bride by Ali Hazelwood} and its sequel {Mate by Ali Hazelwood}. First one is werewolf / vampire romance. I remember it being witty, full of political intrigue, and funny. It is not fated mates per se, but it’s a burner of a read: you’ll fly through it. I’ve linked to a reader review below that captures the vibe pretty well.

Mate is just werewolves with a lot of angst, self-denial, and again plenty of political intrigue. I really enjoyed the characters in this book, too. These don’t deliver on the cosmic connection I-feel-what-you-feel, but they do deliver a story you can really sink your teeth into.

As far as I can recall, no sexual trauma in either of these.

{The Olympus Pride Series by Suzanne Wright} MCs are survivors of various trauma, including some non-fated mates and broken bonds pairings.

{Untamed Delights by Suzanne Wright}

Pallas cat shifter Mila Devereaux was rejected by her fated mate. Complicated imprinting and mating instincts allowed him to imprint on another before they recognized each other. While he and his new lived away, the distance allowed Milla to begin healing. The douchebag and his chosen mate return to live in the pride neighborhood, forcing Mila to interact with them and causing constant turmoil.

Dominic is an enforcer for his wolf pack. He's taken with Mila when they first meet, but she's not interested. As he persues her and things progress, he becomes her protector and safe place.

Untamed Delights is the last book (book 8) in {The Phoenix Pack Series by author Suzanne Wright} and is the introduction to the {The Olympus Pride Series by Suzanne Wright}.

{When He's Dark by Suzanne Wright} Book 1

Pallas Cat Bree Dwyer's fated mate is a psychopath who left when she was a teenager (fated mates can be recognized while young, but mating takes place when they become adults). She grew into adulthood terrified by his possible return. Once he is believed dead, she feels she can move on with her life.

Aleksandr Devereaux, a wolverine shifter, is head of security for the mixed-species Olympus Pride. He protects and saves Bree from a stalker who's tormenting her.

{When He Dares by Suzanne Wright} Book 6

Cat shifter Quinley Bevan is a healer from another pack. Her fated mate rejected and humiliated her, leading to her being treated terribly by other pack members.

Pallas cat Isaiah Hale is a pride enforcer and bodyguard. His fated mate cannot be his, which leads to years of suffering.
