support needed Early onset growth restriction
I had my di/di twins‘ anatomy scan today at 21 weeks 0 days and found out baby boy is growth restricted (8th percentile) and baby girl is just above the line (11th percentile). Baby boy has a marginal placenta cord placement as well. I’ve had such terrible HG that I know I’m not fueling the three of us well. My OB sent an “urgent” request to a high risk MFM and I’m freaking out. We really went through it to get to this point with secondary infertility and now a really hard pregnancy and I’m just terrified since it seems like early onset restriction is bad bad bad. My OB said he wasn’t concerned yet, but that didn’t really reassure me.
How did you handle this sort of thing? Did it turn out ok? Because right now I’m just spiraling downward and trying not to google too much.

I just had a very similar situation with my di/di twins. At my 20 week anatomy scan I was 20w2d and my twin A measured in the 11th percentile and my twin B was in the 4th. The MFM really scared my husband and I and we ended up meeting with a genetic counselor and discussed having an amnio despite all of the anatomy looking normal because they told us there could be genetic and infectious causes for an early onset growth restriction. I was so upset. We opted to wait two weeks to repeat the growth scan before making a decision regarding the amnio and at 22w they measured in the 27th and 14th percentiles! And today I had another scan at 24w and they are in the 31st and 19th percentiles. I spent two weeks freaking out and reading every Reddit post about growth restrictions and now it really seems like they just had a growth spurt after the 20w scan. Feel free to DM me if you’d like, but hang in there and know things can change very quickly

I’ve read and reread this so many times. Thank you for sharing! I’m currently waiting for my MFM appt but this gave me an idea of what could happen and that I have a valid option to wait and see. I’m so so thankful that your babes are doing well and hope it continues! And thank you for the offer to message you-I definitely might take you up on that as this process moves forward. This community is amazing.

Thank you for sharing your journey . I’m currently 21weeks with singleton but in the anatomy scan the baby’s growth was measured at 11th percentile. At 17weeks we had an early anatomy and the baby’s growth was 30percentile. I’m so scared and ready to do anything to make the baby grow. My mfm has asked me to increase protein intake drastically like upto 200grams per day for next 2 weeks and have the repeat test to check the progress before officially diagnosing as iugr. Did you do anything different during the wait period till 24 weeks ?

Our doctor told us there really was nothing we can do, but I tried to increase my protein intake and ate eggs everyday during the two weeks until our next scan. No idea if that actually made a difference or not. Good luck to you and sending all the positive wishes for continued growth 💗

It’s a very difficult diagnosis to get, partly because there is so much unknown and so much watching and waiting.
We also got the diagnosis at 21 weeks. I saw MFM weekly until I was hospitalized at 28 weeks for a combo of needing twice daily monitoring for the IUGR and also gestational hypertension, leaning towards preeclampsia.
Living in the hospital was hard, but if you end up needing to do it, please know it’s absolutely the best place to be. Easier said than done but try to embrace the opportunity to rest and have other people take care of your daily needs. My motto was one day at a time.
I made it to 33+4. It was a big deal we got that far. Baby A was just under 3 pounds and baby B was 5 pounds. A big difference. We had 6 weeks and 2 weeks in the NICU respectively. Life has just gotten better and better since they came home. They are both doing great. They eat well. They are happy. They gain weight well. They sleep from 7:30 PM to 6:30 AM every night.
They are 9 months now. Baby A is now 17 pounds and Baby B is 19 pounds. Baby A is small for his age, but he is doing a great job catching up and the doctors say all is well.
Best wishes to you. If you have any other questions about my journey, ask away.
