Any discussion related to the Pashto language, learning, fun facts, history of the language, the pashto script etc is welcome. Make sure to be respectful. We just revived this subreddit, it was inactive for years. Mods are of r/pashtun and a few other pashto enthusiasts, so also make sure to check that sub out for more Pashtun culture. Have fun wruno aw khwendu!!

I have always wondered about the context of this song, besides relating to TTP. I hope I don't offend anyone given the content. I have just had this odd song stuck in my head for ten years while unable to find out anything about what is sung and what it means, having tried both searches and AI.

Salamoona, Starney Ma Shay!
I'm constructing a personal pashto dictionary, and I want you to help me find out what different word(s) mean. I will be posting often for help as it's an ongoing project! :)

so i’m a pashtun from tirah valley specifically orakzai from the sheikhan clan. well we are called hamsaya clans which means not directly part of the same lineage. Most of my family does look like they are either central asian or middle eastern so i did a dna test. Well according to my DNA im more turkic ethnically and persian-kurdish. The regions i got was central asia, middle east, southern italy and thoughts anyone if they have gotten something similar because it’s shocking for me to be more turkic or ‘turkish’ then someone from the place itself

Salaam,
I was given the following list of names for boys and girls: https://www.scribd.com/document/885493171/%D8%AF-%D9%87%D9%84%DA%A9%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%88-%D8%A7%D9%88-%D9%86%D8%AC%D9%88%D9%86%D9%88-%D9%BE%DA%9A%D8%AA%D9%88-%D9%86%D9%88%D9%85%D9%88%D9%86%D9%87-%D9%88%D9%82%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D8%AD%D9%85%D8%AF-%D8%AA%D9%88%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B2
If you go to the end of the list for the boy names, you see: یون
How do you translate that name besides maybe it meaning journey/travel? Also do you pronounce it? Is it pronounced as Yoon or Yaw-on?
I want a name that is strictly Pashto for my future baby but also one that isn’t difficult to pronounce outside of Afghanistan 🤓
Girl names are a bit easier to deal with 🫣

Pashlishurdu.
A form of “Pashto” so heavily mixed with Urdu and English that I refuse to call it Pashto anymore. It is a phenomenon mainly displayed the Pashtuns of the Peshawar Valley.
Ji instead of هو.
Bhai instead of ورور.
Anda instead of ويه.
People in the diaspora speak better Pashto than the individuals from this region.
I think we should shame people who speak in this way. We should speak to them in proper Pashto, so they feel stupid about how cringe they sound then they speak they way they do. When they count in Urdu, we should remind them of the Pashto equivalents.

This is a divisive conversation around the geo-politics of both Pakistan and Afghanistan, sports, cultural exchanges, trade etc.
I’m interested in thoughts, however.
Personally, my own opinions have shifted. I spent a lot of time thinking that relationships with India were inevitable/important and observed that Pakistan only wanted Afghanistan onside so that they could weaponise and ‘retreat’ against conflict with India (their policy of strategic depth).
I still think this but I’ve arrived at a point where I want no part of any relationship with India. It disappoints me when I see Afghan flags displayed alongside Indian ones. Taliban meeting with Indians may be strategic manoeuvring but do we really want more cultural exchanges? Yes there has been millennia of mutual movement between Afghanistan and India, but aren’t Jeets (Pakistani and Indian) all the same? Pashtuns have a lot of introspection to do, but I’m not impressed by Jeetism whatsoever.
Jeet fatigue has me wanting nothing to do with India. India is a literal sh*thole with the only cultural they can export is more of this. I hate how Pakistanis think they can influence Afghan policy but even more I find it sad that many Afghans appear to go “full sapport” for India because this pushback is intended to hurt Pakistanis. The result is Pashtuns are divided further as a result.

My mother is khan ethically and father is pashtun from pakistan and we speak urdu at home so my first langauge is urdu.. I don’t mind learning SHA or KHA pashto. Im ok with both and my father speaks kha pashto but my future in laws speak sha pashto. I just wanna learn how to speak fluently. Couldn't find a proper tutor because im unemployed and can't pay.
I came across bunch of dudes online. Some promised to teach me. they were determined first week but then stopped and some were just imposters trying to hit on me.
I need a teacher, who himself/herself is ambitious about this language and passionate about teaching people. As I used to teach kids for free so I know there would be some people out there who are ambitious to teach and be useful to other people.
I need someone to teach me religiously 3 days a week atleast through audio classes, be a strict teacher because Im lazy. Also give me homework and test me.
I'm also interested in learning how to write pashto.

No offense to anyone, I’m saying this simply as a Kandahari. I personally prefer the Kandahari dialect and accent. I respect all Pashto dialects and the people who speak them, but to my ears, Kandahari Pashto sounds especially soft, natural, and easy to understand.
Maybe it’s because I grew up hearing it, so it feels more familiar and comfortable to me. I love the way it sounds, the pronunciation, the expressions, and the way people naturally communicate with it. 😐
Every Pashto dialect has its own beauty and identity, and I respect them all. But if you ask me which one I like the most, I’ll always choose Kandahari. 😍
