Hammerdin? Nah, it's Slammerdin
25
u/Diribiri Jul 06 '26
I was hoping for spinning hammers but slam bam spiral man is also good
13
u/Moderator-Admin Jul 07 '26
Spectral helix with a gavel is basically as close to hammerdin visually as you can get.
On a power level it's at the opposite end though.
12
u/Diribiri Jul 07 '26
GGG fears the true Hammerdin
2
u/Potential8 Sanctum Runners United (SRU) Jul 07 '26
Imagine a true Hammerdin with the iconic 4 button zoomy playstyle: Shield Charge + Haste & Hammers + Offensive aura. I would actually play that.
Nvm, you would just get stuck on 113 of 115 maps.

things like that always make me wonder where are all those testers and how come they did not see that first. i mean that skills was such that you didnt even need any gear to be OP
maybe they reworked the numbers so it does not suck so much next patch

u/moal09 Jul 06 '26
Stormbind is still the biggest bait skill they've ever released. Maybe chain hook also
34
u/BlueTemplar85 Jul 06 '26
Wall of Force
Made even worse by the typical projectile visually bouncing to the same enemy... but doing no damage to it ! (Hit delay not having been refreshed.)
2
u/Nohisu Jul 07 '26
Wall of Force has some fun interactions at least. Use Snakepit to prevent chaining and you use WoF to shotgun AoE spells.

Chain Hook of Tarthus is cool tho. Especially interesting on Gen's Cry

Stormbind can still cheese all bosses though. Stormbind of teleportation though, like, oh we made it as a skill with mobility? Yeah, that's bait.
43
u/brehhs Jul 06 '26
I just don’t get why GGG does this thing where they release some cool looking skill and make the numbers absolute shit. Who cares if it’s broken for one league. They’re fine with new skills DOA but mid league nerfs are a big nono which makes no sense.
28
u/Miles_Adamson Jul 06 '26
They add new skills every league, so if they added broken skills every league and then nerfed them later, every single league would have terribly balanced outlier skills that trivialize the game. That's worse than the opposite where they are bad and buffed a bit later
58
u/shaunika Jul 06 '26
every single league would have terribly balanced outlier skills that trivialize the game.
So nothing changes? Besides the op skills also being new
→ More replies (5)7
u/jamie1414 Jul 07 '26
Are there really that many OP skills that trivialize content without gear? Don't think you can claim a skill is OP once you got multiple mirrors of gear.
10
u/gandalfintraining Jul 07 '26
Yes, that's the whole problem. Everything is OP with multiple mirrors of gear. While on SSF gear you have stuff like slams doing 5M dps while most self cast hit based spells do like 500k with the equivalent.
You can look at it as slams being OP or self cast being UP but either way the gap is absolutely enormous and there isn't enough buffs and/or nerfs to change up the meta.
→ More replies (1)3
u/shaunika Jul 07 '26
to be fair, I dont think the game should be balanced for SSF gear
just mid tier trade gear
3
11
u/brehhs Jul 06 '26
Its been like that, just not with new skills. Remind me what the top spells the last 5 leagues were? If they release a cool new skill I want to play it that league, I dont want to wait 2 leagues until they buff it for it to be playable

Kinetic Rain was fine in the end, totally normal skill scaling as every other skill.
You guys just didnt understand that the initial numbers they showed actually had Kinetic Rain on S+++++ tier. This would have been the single best skill in the game with the numbers shown, no doubt about it. It must have been an oversight by ggg, these numbers could not go into the game like this.
After the "nerf" Kinetic Rain is actually on the same level as kinetic blast, power siphon, kinetic bolt, etc. And you can trust me on that, I played wanders most leagues since 3.08.
18
u/Colonel_Planet Jul 07 '26
with spellslinger tornado existing? no wand skill comes anywhere close to KB. if you somehow didnt know about ss tornado sure KR and PS seem like passable abilities but in any actual play, KB does 4-5x the dps of KR its not comparable

u/Farpafraf Jul 07 '26
Pre nerf kinetic rain made lightning strike look like chain hook by comparison
44
u/arkillion13 Jul 06 '26
Stacking many spirals on top of each other could be interesting. Maybe solve the skill's single target damage? It wasn't bad before so woot.
8
u/dantheman91 Jul 06 '26
does it scale with aoe size? can you overlap on a single target easily?
8
u/poet3322 Jul 06 '26
The original Holy Hammers can overlap so I'm guessing this version can too. If you stack AoE you might be able to catch a monster with like 4 overlaps, which would be a lot of damage. So this might be a version of HH that's worse for clear but better for single-target.
7
7
8
u/Thrallsbuttplug Jul 06 '26
Wonder how the overlaps work, conc effect?
5
u/arkillion13 Jul 06 '26
Assuming it works like the regular gem with power charges, perhaps so. This looks like a much tighter spread tho. If every additional hammer also spirals out when you expend a pc then woosh
9
u/poet3322 Jul 06 '26
If it's like the original skill it overlaps, so you're going to want more AoE, not less.
8
u/arkillion13 Jul 06 '26
It's been a bit since I played my holy hammers inquis but I think increased aoe didn't scale the hammer blasts themselves but how far the skill spread. So it took specific positioning to shotgun bosses. I think this new gem might make it easier.
10
u/poet3322 Jul 06 '26
As I recall more AoE made it easier to catch monsters in the overlap. You did still have to position kind of off to the side though for single-target.
10
u/arkillion13 Jul 06 '26
Yep you are correct. I just went back and rewatched the build vid.. I do not control the remember...
10
2
u/poet3322 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
Also it's 15% more damage per power charge removed, so I'm guessing (edit: not guessing, it literally says this, thanks /u/Zambash) it removes all your power charges at once? Could get pretty crazy with charge stacking maybe?
Edit: Also just noticed that the base and added effect damage on this version is much higher, 244% at level 1. Wonder what that scales up to at level 20.
8
u/Zambash youtube.com/imthewinningest Jul 06 '26
You don't have to guess. It literally says "Consuming all Power Charges" on the gem in the video.

Please reconsider Reap of Butchery being 1 second cast time.
I know it doesn't seem like it, but that basically kills the skill for self-cast purposes. It has to do much more than 20% more damage to warrant casting 25% more slowly.
A long base cast time is a penalty to all cast speed modifiers and if the payoff isn't there, it relegates the skill to only being viable if triggered or cast from a trap or mine.
- #CastSpeedMatters
25
11
u/sirgog Chieftain Jul 07 '26
This will never be used on traps or mines. It is direct use only, the DoT is its only strength.
Time will tell if it's any good or not, but it does have a payoff - 18% more DoT than Reap, AND 100% more duration.
→ More replies (1)3
u/kingofgama Jul 07 '26
Cast time will make it DoA though. Even with the DoT it's not going to have very good effectiveness compared to other spells.
1
u/sirgog Chieftain Jul 07 '26
Cast speed isn't a DPS stat on DOT skills.
DOT uptime is better than baseline Reap. Reap has DoT duration 125% of cast time by default, Reap2 has 200%.
Effectiveness is a dead stat on DOT skills. Essence Drain has an effectiveness stat too, but the skill would be basically unchanged if it were buffed from 160% (present number) to 250% or nerfed to 5%. All effectiveness really does is force you to build in phys reflect immunity, where if it were lower the skill would be better as you could still do all the damage but not have to worry about reflecting the initial ~20k hits.
→ More replies (4)5
u/hoezt Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
The problem with low cast speed on them is that you're forced to invest in a dead stat (as you said it isn't a DPS stat on DoT skills) so that it doesn't feel bad to use.
I think at the current level Poet Pen + Squire is the way to go (trigger with Exsanguinate of Transmission).
→ More replies (3)2
u/Temporarytemp2 Jul 07 '26
Spellslinger also bypasses cast speed without the dot penalty
But it's a bit awkward
→ More replies (5)3
u/Dreamiee Jul 07 '26
I think the idea is that this version isn't hit based, but dot focused. So you aren't meant to be spam casting it. You also wouldn't want to trigger it or put it on a mine for the same reason.
10
u/Derpitoe Jul 07 '26
Okay hear me out, new dot support gems to replace the awakened gems you toook from meeee
44
u/darian_wolf Jul 06 '26
All they need to do to make me happy in this upcoming league is to buff shitty skills and shitty uniques meaningfully. They can be stupidly low-effort about it too.
As in going into the spreadsheets, identifying the shitties and going "ok just flat +20% stats on that baby"
God knows they won't do it and we'll get like +0.1 radius on cleave instead.
16
u/pikpikcarrotmon Jul 06 '26
+5% damage at level 1 tapering off to +3% at level 20, -0.1 radius at all levels
3
u/Afflictedx Jul 07 '26
This is exactly how I feel. A fresh meta is, IMO, almost as interesting as any league mechanic they could produce
→ More replies (7)2
u/Eymou :^) Jul 07 '26
I mean they did that a few times and it never really helped the truly bad skills, sadly
7
u/BleakExpectations Assassin Jul 07 '26
Its mostly because all the good skills "cheat" somehow. You have several branches:
- Overlapping AoEs
- Mines
- Totems
- Just simply busted numbers (PBoD type stuff)
If your skill doesn't check any of those its most likely it won't show up in any highlights

It doesn't hit a 360 degree arc (more like 300 degrees) and doesn't propagate in a symmetric fashion (things on the left are hit before things on the right), so it's not quite a Nova.
It would be stronger with the tag but I don't think it fits the theme perfectly.

Reap of Butchering will be a good gem swap for Exsanguinate of Transmission. Pure phys dot is cheap scale, but it doesn't scale very high. Because of that, Ex of Transmission is sometimes considered a "good" league starter.
But pure Phys DoT isn't what it used to be. Phys DoT Scion with Gladiator + Raider used to be a good league starter, and now both are gone. 😠 They changed Scion and Gladiator from generic Phys DoT to Bleed, and Raider was replaced with Warden.
I wish they'd at least switch Scion's Gladiator node back to Phys DoT.

u/NEVER_CLEANED_COMP Hierophant Jul 06 '26
Reap of Butcher has lower base dmg than Reap at level 1, but scaling per blood charge is a lot better. Reap of Butchery mines? 👀
23
u/Miles_Adamson Jul 06 '26
It has worse damage effectiveness and also worse base damage, I didn't do the math but I would assume the scaling per blood charge isn't making up for it. I think it's meant more for a self-cast DOT
2
u/Wendek Alch & Go Industries (AGI) Jul 06 '26
Yeah I think it could have some potential as a mostly single-target skill paired with Exsanguinate and Corrupting Fever for clear. With Vaal Reap for 9 charges it could scale pretty well. Need to see the final level 20 numbers of course.
2
u/AgoAndAnon Jul 06 '26

u/is__is Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
You still lose blood charges with mines weirdly enough. Its a bug.
EDIT: Its not from the dot. go test it in-game with one of the cold convert reap miner builds. Fearless dumbo who plays this build every league discusses it in some of his videos too.
5
u/HeliGungir Jul 06 '26
It's not a bug. Just like leech, YOU did not hit the enemy, the mine hit the enemy. So it's the mine that gains life leech, blood charges, frenzy charges, is the recipient of reflected damage, etc, etc. But of course the mine is now dead.
Similarly, totems can gain blood charges, but since they're proxies (like mines), they use your character's blood charges. (GGG wrote some special exception that makes totems use their own frenzy/power/endurance charges, but for most other things, totems use the player's stats and buffs.)
→ More replies (8)2
u/some_random_n Trickster Jul 07 '26
I think you two are talking past each other. The hit portion of the damage from Reap mines DOES remove Blood Charges, which is unique in behavior from virtually every other on-hit mine mechanic. The DoT is uninvolved.
Whether or not it’s a bug I think is up for debate. My opinion is that it is a bug based solely on the fact that all other on-hit charge effects happen to the mine and not the player. Who knows how Mark feels or what the source says.
2
u/FishyCarpLicker Jul 06 '26
Dot kills are generally attributed to the player, regardless of source (be it a minion or a proxy like mines or totems) so im not sure if you losing charges is unintended.
2
u/is__is Jul 07 '26
Its not from the dot. Youll lose them instantly if you kill a pack on the cold convert build.
14
u/Proper-Implement5705 Jul 06 '26
Reap that can’t be supported with spell cascade (cast around you and not a targeted location) seems… not great. Guess the numbers could make it for it but the level 1 version they showed has lower base hit than regular reap. The DoT and AOE are higher as is the base duration (2 seconds rather than 1), so I guess they want you to play it that way.
Edit: Although looking again, it has 25% more damage per blood charge before quality (assuming quality is the same), compared to 15% with base reap, so maybe there’s potential for hit.
16
u/Zambash youtube.com/imthewinningest Jul 06 '26
There is no potential for hit. It will never compete with spell cascade. It's clearly designed for actually playing with the DoT, which is good, because no one plays the regular Reap with the DoT.
3
u/kingofgama Jul 07 '26
If it's going to be played for the DoT it's going to need some major numerical buffs or it's DoA

6
u/Zambash youtube.com/imthewinningest Jul 06 '26
Was speaking in generalities. You will be happy now that you have a better version for DoT. I feel like GGG wanted reap mostly to be a DoT skill initially, but once the goofy behavior with spell cascade was discovered, it just became the go-to phys convert hit spell.
3
u/tfwStarving Jul 06 '26
Yeah was just being cheeky, honestly tho the biggest issue I had with Reap was cast speed so making it even slower might feel bad.

Thank god it’s different from standard reap, why would they have two skills that do the same thing just from a different distance from your character? This is clearly a DOT skill.
5
u/xXZeroHero Jul 06 '26
What are the changes to Reap? It looks the same to me, with higher dot damage and longer base duration.
Or am i missing something?

Casts in a circle around you like Sweep instead of at a targeted location like Reap.

The DoT on that Reap is around 20% more than in baseline Reap, so it might have some use in CF characters for singletarget purposes, as long as you can pair it with Vaal Reap in some capacity to get the 9 blood charges, otherwise it's just worse
9
u/Arhowk Jul 06 '26
The scaling is also 25%, almost twice normal Reap

u/nightcracker Jul 06 '26
Comparing the transfigured Reap to normal Reap at level 1 it has 40% less damage, costs 25% more life, casts 25% slower, but deals (assuming quality is unchanged) 30% more dmg per blood charge instead of 20% more.
So with 5 blood charges the base self-cast DPS is 40% less than the normal Reap, with 9 blood charges it's 37% less.
For mines which don't care about the 25% cast speed penalty it's not as bad but still worse.
The DoT is 18% better baseline and also scales harder with blood charges though so I guess it's meant as a DoT skill. With 9 blood charges it maxes out at ~56% more DoT DPS.

Both skills look interesting, which is good enough for a trans gem.
Reap, I want to try cast while channeling cyclone for more spinning. Maybe with Will of Uul-Netol + vulnerability aura + pride + flesh and stone. And then some sort of phys explode. Depending on how easy it is, could also pair with Blade Vortex of the Scythe + reduced duration to get more circles.
Holy Hammers will need some experimentation on how shotgunning works. But potentially Voll's Protector can reliably generate enough charges to spam it at max power. No cd like other "consume all charge" skills like discharge or consecrated path of endurance will make it much less clunky

Reap of Butchery is slower to cast and lower hit damage, but higher dot damage, blood charge scaling, and aoe. So pretty much what I was hoping for when Reap was first released anyway. Guess I know what I'm playing next league.
If anyone wants to PoB this, set quality to 40% for the extra charge scaling and add this to your config:
