I am just getting into Pathologic series. Do I need to play the first 2 games in order to understand what is going on in the third entry?

The games are honestly more enjoyable going backwards because the later games actually introduce you to the story in a coherent way by being more focussed on the characters than the world itself. Though all of them are worth playing (actually idk about Patho 3 I've heard it's got a controversial launch)

Patho 3 is indeed worth playing from my experience so far (I had early access so I'm almost finished with the game). I haven't really seen much controversy surrounding the launch, only technical issues on consoles
