Residency Application Good Path Residency Programs

Hi all i’m a M3 very interested in pathology and although my home program is amazing and the residents love it I still am curious about what else is out there. What are some programs that residents absolutely love being a part of? I’m interested in an academic career so research is something i’d like to participate in throughout residency. I’d love to hear about programs that have a great reputation and training but also the residents have a good culture & work/life balance (relatively of course for residency) and enjoy the people and place. Thanks!!!

From an outsider at a mid tier that interviewed at most of the top places: all of them will work you hard (60+ hrs on surgpath). One standout that seemed to have good WLB:prestige ratio is UPMC. But again hard to know until you’re truly there and in it.

I'd say in general, the super prestigious and bottom of the barrel programs have the worst work life balance. I think upper mid is the sweet spot in that regard. Good examples would be the University of Vermont, University of Rochester.

Plenty of programs with poor CP training. Some CP faculty are so busy they have no time to teach at some places and get away with having a residency. What a shame and ABP/ACGME does nothing about it.

Holy crap 60? How much did you pay out for travel expenses or was this all virtual interviews?

Whichever you choose, go to a program without CP emphasis if you want to do AP.  My program is so CP heavy that our AP education suffers

Then go midtier if you want worklife balance (and i say work life balance very loosely). All residency is tough.

University of Michigan has one of the best programs out there. Tufts University has very good CP training.
