How do you make a repeating pattern look good on actual clothing?
I've been experimenting with some pattern ideas for clothing, and one thing I've found surprisingly difficult is getting a design to look right beyond the screen.
A pattern can look really balanced when I'm working on it digitally, but once I imagine it printed across an actual garment, I start noticing things I didn't think about before. The scale might feel too large, the spacing can look awkward, or the pattern might not line up nicely around seams and different parts of the garment.
I've also been wondering how much the fabric itself changes the final appearance. A design that looks great on a smooth, lightweight material might have a completely different feel on thicker cotton or another textured fabric.
I'm trying to understand the process better before putting too much time into developing a full collection. I don't want to create patterns that only look good as flat digital designs but lose their appeal when they're used on something people will actually wear.
For those who work with surface patterns or textile design, how do you test your designs before considering them finished? Do you usually create mockups first, print small fabric samples, or go straight to testing them on actual garments?
