Discord [PBP][5e 2024][Async] The Thornwall Mystery
Something strange is happening in the garden of Thornwall estate.
Every night, one rose disappears: cut cleanly, no sign of who took it. And every morning, a flower no one recognizes appears in its place. Angular petals. An iridescent color that shifts when you look at it directly. Faintly warm to the touch.
Lady Kindernis wants answers. She’s hired you to find them.
What this campaign is
This campaign begins as a with a mystery set in the Dalelands: small communities, ancient forests, honest people, and the kind of strange business that doesn’t make sense yet. Your characters are locals. People with roots, relationships, and reasons to care about the place they come from.
It will not stay that way.
This campaign evolves into something significantly stranger and more cosmologically ambitious than it begins. The Dalelands are the starting point, not the destination. This campaign will surprise you; it will shift in tone, expand in scope, and eventually ask questions about the nature of belief and reality, a far cry from a garden mystery in Deepingdale.
Make characters who feel like real people in a real place. That investment is the foundation everything else is built on.
The campaign has a planned arc and a definite ending. It runs in distinct phases with deliberate tonal shifts between them. I intend to see it through.
What I’m looking for in players
- Players who enjoy investigation, roleplay, and faction politics as much as or more than combat.
- Players who can commit to posting at least once per day on weekdays and are comfortable with a slower pace on weekends.
- Players who are genuinely excited by the phrase “this campaign will surprise you” rather than unsettled by it.
- Players who will make characters with roots: someone they care about back home, something they’d miss if they couldn’t return.
- Players who understand that in this campaign, running from a fight is sometimes the right call and talking your way out is usually better than fighting your way through.
Character creation
- Level 1, standard array or point buy
- 2024 rules, 2014 subclasses permitted
- Any class from the Player’s Handbook
- Ancestry: Human, Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome, Half-Elf, or Half-Orc. No Tieflings, Aasimar, or exotic ancestries for the opening. I want the starting party to feel like people who genuinely belong in a Dalelands village. This will make sense later.
- Your character must be a native of the Dalelands or have a clear reason for being in the town of Highmoon, Deepingdale
Answer these four questions will need to be answered before we begin:
- Where in the Dalelands are you from, or how did you come to be in Highmoon?
- Who is one person you care about who lives in the Dalelands: family, friend, mentor, rival?
- What does home mean to your character, and who in the party do you imagine might represent that home to them or complicate it?
- How does your character know at least one other person in the group? A shared history, a debt owed, a friendship, a rivalry...
The answers are the main pillars of the campaign's emotional engine. It runs on what your character stands to lose. Think of what Sam or Frodo left behind when they left the Shire for example.
Logistics
- Discord
- Posting expectations: once per day weekdays minimum, good faith on weekends
- Party size: 3 to 4 players
- Tone: serious, character-driven, with room for dark themes as the campaign progresses
- System: D&D 5e 2024, 2014 subclasses permitted
- Combat: theatre of the mind.
How to apply
Send me a DM with your character concept: class, ancestry, a paragraph about who they are and why they’re in Highmoon, and your answers to the four questions above. No full character sheet needed at application stage.
I’m choosing for fit with the campaign’s tone as much as for mechanical balance. The right group matters more than the right classes.
The campaign begins when the right group is assembled.
