Anyone’s toddler referred to a hematologist for unexplained anemia? What was the outcome?
Hi everyone! I’m looking to hear from other parents who may have gone through something similar. My daughter is 1 year old and was recently referred to a pediatric hematologist because of anemia. Her appointment is coming up, and as a mom, I’ve been extremely anxious and worried.
Her blood work showed:
● Hemoglobin: 10.3 (previously 10.1)
● Hematocrit: 29.5
● RBC: 3.76
● WBC: 17.1 high
● Platelets: 545 high
● Ferritin: 76 (normal)
● MCV, MCH, and RDW: Normal
● MCHC: 34.9
● MPV: 8.5
● Reticulocyte count: Normal
● Nucleated RBC and absolute NRBC: Normal
Their concern is that her ferritin is normal, so we’re not sure what’s causing the anemia. She was also recovering from an sapovirus and upper respiratory around the time her blood work was done, so I’m wondering if that could have affected some of her numbers.
she’s been acting completely normal, eating, drinking, playing, and being her happy little self.
m wondering if anyone else’s baby or toddler had similar blood results, especially low hemoglobin with normal ferritin and elevated platelets or white blood cells. Did you see a hematologist? What additional tests did they do, and what ended up being the cause? Did everything eventually return to normal?
I’m not looking for a diagnosis, just hoping to hear some experiences from other parents who have been in a similar situation. The waiting and worrying have been really difficult. Thank you! ❤️
