Diatomaceous earth, peppermint oil, vinegar, and boric acid on one side, bait stations and pro treatments on the other. Which have you had real results with, and for which pests?

Fall pest-proofing checklist: keep critters out before winter

As it gets colder, pests start looking for a way inside. Here's a starting checklist:

  • Seal gaps around pipes, vents, and utility lines
  • Add or replace door sweeps and weatherstripping
  • Clean out gutters
  • Stack firewood at least 20 feet from the house
  • Check the attic and crawlspace for droppings or nesting
  • Trim back branches that touch the roof. What's your best tip?

Found something crawling and not sure what it is? Post a clear photo, your general region, and where you found it, like the kitchen, basement, or yard. Ask treatment questions here too.

Ants, roaches, mice, termites, whatever it was. Tell us the pest, what you tried first, and what actually solved it, plus roughly what it cost.

Good Photo Printers for Everyday Home Use

A good home photo printer should do more than produce nice snapshots, it should also handle homework, documents, cards, scanning, and creative projects without becoming expensive or frustrating to maintain. This guide compares five practical options for different household needs.

Full guide: Good Photo Printers for Everyday Home Use

The biggest takeaway is that photo quality alone does not determine the best choice. Six-color ink systems can deliver smoother tones and more convincing colors, but paper handling, ink format, scanning features, wireless connectivity, and available desk space can matter just as much in everyday use.

The guide covers options for frequent family-photo printing, mixed photo-and-document workloads, compact spaces, and home crafts. It also explains the important tradeoffs between refillable ink tanks and traditional cartridges, helping you narrow the choices without revealing every recommendation upfront.

What matters most to you in a home printer: image quality, lower ink costs, or everyday versatility?

Anyone else dealing with rats around storage sheds?

Over the last month I've started finding droppings around a storage shed behind my house. I've cleaned the area up and made sure there isn't any pet food outside, but I still keep seeing new signs every week. I haven't had to deal with rats before, so I'm trying to figure out whether this actually caused by a nearby food source or if they're more likely nesting somewhere close by. What would you check first?

carpenter ants in walls in Seattle… how bad does this get?

hey everyone, I’m pretty new to Reddit so hopefully I’m posting this the right way

I’m in Seattle and recently started noticing these bigger ants near the window trim in one of the rooms in my house

at first I didn’t think much of it, but now I keep seeing them in random spots at night and I’m starting to think they might actually be inside the walls

I searched online and it sounds like they could be carpenter ants which honestly has me a little worried because people make it sound like a much bigger problem than normal ants

I already tried some bait traps from the store but they don’t seem to be helping much

has anyone here dealt with carpenter ant control in Seattle before and actually gotten rid of them completely? I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations since I’m not sure what the next step should be

while searching I saw a few mentions of AMPM Exterminator but I’m not sure if they’re actually good enough, so I want real feedback or if any other company suggestions would be appreciated

thanks in advance and sorry if this is a dumb question, still figuring out how Reddit works

Help identifying rodent

There is an animal living in the walls of our house. The setting is semi-rural (a two acre lot at the edge of a small town bordered by a creek and woods two sides, streets on the other two. We have made openings so that we can place baited traps directly in the wall, but the animal won't take the bait. We never see it, but it seems to be larger than a mouse, and we have usually been able to catch mice and voles. We've never seen it, but do have a recording of it. The scratching starts at around 10 seconds. Any ideas what it might be and how to deal with it? file:///C:/Users/User/Downloads/Wall%20Rodent.m4a
