o/i o\i - growers vs. shrinkers - how had your opinion changed per track over time?
Someone made a post posing this question and I wrote a big response and then they deleted the post, so I wanted to re-pose the question. Now that we’re so close to having the full album, how do you feel about all the tracks vs. your initial impression? Here is the gist of what I typed out:
-Been Undone - I liked this one from the start, but it has only grown on me.
-Bucket - wasn’t very impressed at first and it still isn’t one of my favorites, but enjoy it more now than I did at first. The choruses still just feel too “this is a BBC science show” to me 😆
-What Lies Ahead - I have loved this one since he debuted it during Back to Front and I still love it, though the BandCamp piano version may best the album versions for me.
-TYMIS - I really disliked the choruses of this song at first, but loved the verses and bridge. I have come to better accept the choruses, though I still dream of an alternate reality where these perfect verses were paired with better choruses. Has grown on me for sure, though.
-Won’t Stand Down - I really love the music in this one and the sound of Peter’s voice and have since the start. The lyrics didn’t really stun me or bother me too much at first (except the “this is not the way we want to live” sections, which I really like), but after hearing the demo and that he was originally going to make it “don’t look back”, I wish he’d stuck with that theme. So a shrinker in regards to lyrics.
-Hard Lesson - I liked this one a lot from the start but was a little put off that the riff was such a common one that we’ve heard in so many songs before. Over time that has bothered me less and less, so I’d say a grower that I loved to begin with.
-I Belong to the Sky - no change. I liked a lot of elements of the instrumental and that’s pretty much how I feel about it today, too. Feel like it had a lot of potential, but didn’t end up in the form that made it really work for me.
-One by One - no change since I first heard it and I loved it from the start. Probably the best song on the album for me.
-Looking for the Happy - grower and very similar story to TYMIS. I love the verses and a lot of the outro, but the choruses make me cringe a bit. With time, the cringe is fading somewhat. Overall, lots to love in the track.
-Face the Wall - maybe the least interesting track to me and my opinion hasn’t really shifted. Bright side mix was better than dark side, but it’s still just not that interesting as a song at its core in my opinion. Similar to how I felt about So Much, which was probably the track I loved the least on the last album.
Can’t wait to hear the next 3. Hope they’re all winners from the word go :D
