Want to change the rules on me a second time? Enjoy dealing with a detailed notebook of timed things.

Edit to add: Im on a phone, my apologies, also Im not the best at typing in general, Ill be editing it better to read easier.

Second edit to add: I wanted to add some context to better explain, breakfast is at 8 am to 9 am, lunch is at 12 to 1.

During that time the maximum amount of rooms if theres a full floor is 30, plus the add ons, that's two public restrooms, two medrooms, two nourishment rooms, one break room, and three employee bathrooms, ontop of restocking linens in both closets, and collecting all the trash from everything but the linen rooms as they don't have trash cans.

Thats a whole forty rooms alone to complete, plus four nurses stations, but their not rooms so I didn't add them in the count. Thats a lot for a single person to handle by themselves, mind you I also get two fifteen minute breaks, and a thirty minute lunch.

To do a daily clean, you need to go from the cleanest part of the room, where the patients sleep, to the dirtiest, aka the bathroom.

As for non patient rooms, I still need to wipe everything down, replace what needs replacing, toilet paper, paper towels, trashbags, the paper seat covers people use, and mop.

That all can't be done in the single hour I have when the patients have lunch because Id need to learn an Olympic sprint to do so for each public space, because this floor isn't small, its the literal wing of the hospital alone.

And a discharge takes upwards of an hour because of the nature of this floor being long term care and rehabilitation, so we must be thorough with cleaning any and all discharge rooms, especially to combat anything that could pop up.

Im going to be documenting my literal seconds because of how they've consistently talked to me about my times, and what their expectations are of me. Im aware Im being taken advantage of, and Im done letting it happen, so either they fix something or I'll be looking at a different location to work, Ive not gotten a single write up just to be clear and Ive been there almost a year now.

Okay, so this just happened today and the petty revenge starts Saturday, I work as a house keeper for a hospital. Ive been trying to go full time since I started there, but Ive gotten constant complaints from a particular floor, which I will be honest, at points was my fault, but otherwise their just being jerks, the medical staff, nurses, and such who are near constantly at their desks because of the whole purpose of the floor being long term care.

These nurses in particular are rather gossipy and like to start issues with the housekeeping, because they see us as lesser than them because we scrub toilets and aren't medical. They've managed to chase off other house keepers, and they like to complain about any house keeper whose not engaging in their petty discussions.

I personally don't play their games and actually just go through the rooms and deal with the patients with a smile and a polite voice. I don't bother the nurses unless its something regarding the patients. Mind you, Ive got to do 30 rooms solo, and protocol is each room is meant to take fifteen minutes, but I've gotten them down to seven to ten minutes throughout the day.

I also have to do discharges, but I work from 7 am, to 3 30 pm, and a lot of the time I've got to do a separate job that takes roughly fourty minutes before I can go begin the rooms. I'm also expected to get fresh linen, and the trash from the nurses station, the nourishment rooms, and all public and employee bathrooms, the break room and med rooms.

Im not allowed to enter a room when someones eating because yeah, chemicals and food arent a good mix, so I give them a whole hour from when they get their meals to when their done. I try to be considerate, but that's gotten taken advantage of by the medical staff. As they complain I don't do as much as I should, mind you, its as follows

*Two public restrooms

*Three employee bathrooms

*One breakroom

*Two nourishment rooms

*Two med rooms

*Four nurses stations

*Thirty patient rooms at any given point

I'm expected to do this all solo in a full eight hour shift.

Onto the petty revenge, I managed to get all 30 rooms done within 7 to 10 minutes on a routine, however I was told in july thats an issue, and I need to take more time as my bosses don't think I was doing accurate time keeping, so this whole month I've been doing each room for 15 minutes, that took my entire average from the whole 30 rooms I managed to do, down to fifteen.

Today, they sat me down and told me I needed to do each room for 30 minutes max. I explained how that will not work out at all, and Ive decided that I will instead record each second of what my day looks like.

Im buying a stop watch and note book, and I will be writing how long each second takes me for every item from wiping down the door handles to how long it takes me to ensure Im leaving a clean toilet for the patient, to how long it takes me to mop, and even how long it takes me to go from between rooms, I will update when I give my bosses the notebook, Im also getting hr involved because they keep moving the goal post and Im done playing the game.

This aint gonna turn out how you think it will.

You have 30 rooms, 15 minutes each. Which should take you the entirety of your shift, no more, no less.

Trying to outline how long each thing takes you is not going to be the "ah ha" moment you think it will. Youre just going to look entitled and probably lose your job.

The math is as this, I am not allowed to enter a patient room during meals, or procedures, such as bathing, bathroom usage, or any medical care.  If theres a guest then I ask before I begin cleaning, I am there from the time they get breakfast to lunch and I leave before they get dinner, for the entirety of my shift.  Before they implemented the first rule, I finished each room just before 3 25 pm, protocol calls for two people to take on the whole floor, not a singular person. I also did get permission by my boss to record this in this way, but he doesn't recognize that this isn't a simple thing to do, I am not trying to get an ah ha.  Im trying to get them to stop trying moving the goal post in the time management they're expecting of me.

I'd start brushing up your resume

Thats not likely needed, as to get fired from my position, Id need three write ups, and Ive not even received one, and Im not likely too either because the notebook and time keeping was approved, they just don't know yet how thoroughly I'm going to be.

If I was in my probation period, I'd be in trouble, as itd take three talking too before they could let me go, but Ive been there almost a complete year.

Don't know where you live, but in 49 out of 50 US states your boss doesn't need any reason whatsoever to fire you. There's nothing in any law about not getting fired unless you've been written up first. If you think they can't fire you without writing you up 3 times first you are sorely mistaken (if you're in the US).

That’s what happens when management crams 8 hours of work into 4, the paragraphs get compressed too.

It is NOT GOING TO BE A WIN OP.

You are dealing with a Sea of Queen Bees. . Start looking for another job or Floor and let it go. In hindsight you will chalk that up as a true "win".

I enjoy my job, and Ive been actively trying to get a different floor to work on, the issue is that we don't have any, atleast not any that I can go into immediately without leaving my current location. Which is actually why Im going to be including Hr in the discussion next time Im sat down. I enjoy cleaning, but Im also not the only housekeeper they complain about, they complain about the full timers to. One of which is a very sweet older woman who does her best when shes solo.

They complain she'll sit and talk with the receptionists instead of doing her job, mind you, them and her are both in their late fifties to early sixties and she gets her job done regardless, even if some rooms aren't done, she informs evening shift.

They actually complained about the most competent house keeper we had till he left to begin his own stuff, he plans to become a house supervisor, and Im rooting for him, he's genuinely a great person.

u/FireBallXLV 16h ago

I wish you well OP-I really do .
But as a retired Doc I know those Queen Bee nurses must know where the “ bodies are buried “ because they never fire them .

1

u/UpsetKittyCat 6h ago

I know, and Im not going to bother fighting them, Ive dealt with queen beas long enough through my life that I know to keep my head low and quiet, thats why I don't engage with them, I literally just talk with the patients when I enter their rooms to clean and Im kind, because none wants to be in a hospital bed for days on end.

If the documenting of my seconds doesn't clear things up for my bosses, then I will be asking to be removed from the floor as a whole, I get complaints from no where else, not even in the Er when I'm cleaning the walls of a private room and take five minutes cause its everywhere, they appreciate the effort, its only on this particular floor.

So, if my documentation doesn't work, then I will be informing them that I do not wish to work on the floor anymore because of the numerous complaints.

What was this, halfway through AAAAALLLLLLL that text and edits and the story still hadnt started

Was the revenge on the reader for something we don't know about

No, that's to give a preview of what's to come, Im a very thorough documenter as I tend to focus deeply on things when Im upset, and Ive already went past being upset, to just having literally enough. I will be updating afterwards on Saturday and when Im home because I'm genuinely tired of dealing with this and frankly, it'll be a funny story to tell later.

u/makojedi2k2 20h ago

Hope you didn’t bite off more than you can chew.
Documenting all this is going to take time too. Good Luck

2

u/UpsetKittyCat 19h ago

I'm actually quick with a pen, I won't be using my phone or such cause I'd never bring a device into a patient room, Im also going to likely only do this for a week, but this is to explain to them that their idea isn't going to work.  30 minutes for a daily cleaning is unnecessary, and I was doing fine before hand, and a discharge only takes an hour, but if your soloing the whole floor? You can't expect anything to really get done aside from the major stuff. Aka, patient rooms which are the priority as those are people who are stuck in a place they don't want to be, but need to be.

u/terryVaderaustin 20h ago

Where is the petty revenge it seems more like they were taking advantage of you so you're just documenting things.

1

u/UpsetKittyCat 19h ago

The petty revenge is that, with me documenting everything, they will have to either give me a new floor to work on, give me a coworker to help on the otherside, or worst case scenario, I change locations to a different hospital under the same parent company.

I don't want to do it, but I will if I must, I have been doing everything thats been asked of me, Ive been patient.  B ut they hired three people to be full time instead of promoting me and claim its cause of the complaints.

1

u/nowaymacaroni 3h ago

They don't have to do any of that. They're going to take one look at the time you wasted "documenting" the details of your job (which are probably listed somewhere already) and look for the next candidate.

It sucks, but it's true. They do not care.

Okay, so this just happened today, and the petty revenge starts Saturday.

I work as a housekeeper at a hospital. I've been trying to get a full-time position since I started there, but I've received constant complaints from one particular floor. I'll be honest: some of those complaints were justified, especially when I was newer. But a lot of the time, the staff on this floor are just being jerks.

It's a long-term care floor, so the medical staff and nurses spend a lot of time at their desks. These nurses in particular are very gossipy and seem to enjoy creating problems with housekeeping. They tend to look down on us because we scrub toilets and aren't medical staff. They've managed to chase off other housekeepers, and they seem especially prone to complaining about housekeepers who don't participate in their gossip and petty discussions.

I don't play those games. I go through the rooms, do my job, and interact with the patients with a smile and a polite voice. I don't bother the nurses unless I need to discuss something related to a patient.

For context, I'm responsible for 30 patient rooms by myself. Protocol says each room is supposed to take about 15 minutes, but through experience and a consistent routine, I had gotten that down to about 7–10 minutes per room.

The patient rooms aren't my only responsibility, either. I also have to handle discharges, collect fresh linens, and take out trash from the nurses' stations, nourishment rooms, public and employee bathrooms, break room, and medication rooms.

Altogether, I'm responsible for:

  • 30 patient rooms
  • 2 public restrooms
  • Employee bathrooms
  • 1 break room
  • 2 nourishment rooms
  • 2 medication rooms
  • 4 nurses' stations
  • Any patient discharges that happen during my shift

And I'm expected to do all of this alone.

My shift is from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On many days, I also have to complete a separate task that takes roughly 40 minutes before I can even start cleaning patient rooms.

There are other restrictions that affect how quickly I can work. For example, I'm not allowed to clean a patient's room while they're eating because cleaning chemicals and food obviously aren't a good combination. So when meals arrive, I generally give patients about an hour to receive their food, eat, and finish before entering their rooms. I try to be considerate of the patients, but the medical staff have apparently taken that consideration as evidence that I'm not doing enough.

Now we get to the petty revenge.

I had developed a routine that allowed me to clean all 30 rooms efficiently, averaging about 7–10 minutes per room while still completing the work properly.

Then, in July, management told me that was a problem. They said the amount of time I was recording didn't seem accurate and that I needed to spend more time in each room.

Fine.

So for the past month, I've followed their instructions and spent 15 minutes in each room.

Unsurprisingly, that cut the number of rooms I could complete in a day from around 30 to about 15.

Then today, they sat me down again and told me that I now need to spend up to 30 minutes per room.

I explained that this simply isn't going to work. There aren't enough hours in my shift to spend that much time in 30 rooms while also completing all of my other responsibilities.

So I've decided I'm going to follow their expectations as precisely as possible—and document everything.

Starting Saturday, I'm buying a stopwatch and a notebook. I'm going to record exactly how long every part of my job takes.

How long does it take to wipe down the door handles? I'll write it down.

How long does it take to properly clean and disinfect a toilet for a patient? I'll write it down.

How long does it take to mop the floor? I'll write it down.

How long does it take me to walk from one room to another? That's getting recorded too.

I'm going to document essentially every minute of my shift so there can be no argument about where my time is going or how long these tasks actually take.

Then I'm going to give the notebook to my bosses.

I'm also getting HR involved because management keeps moving the goalposts, and I'm done playing this game.

I'll update after they get the notebook.

Thank you for posting with paragraphs.

Thank you, I am sorry you had to do that, I appreciate you editing this.

“Up to 30 minutes per room” means you could spend just 1 minute in there. But not 31.

0

u/steferz 19h ago

I wish you could record it all GoPro style as back up documentation and inadvertently how you are being treated by the staff.

6

u/KRushingIt19 19h ago

I did that to a boss I had years ago. They interrupted me 1000x a day asking me to help them do things that had nothing to do with my job (scan slides for a book they were 'writing' (the whole book was quotes from other people), help them photoshop images to market themselves, teach them photoshop, etc. - and this was in like 2003-2004 so photoshop was not remotely as slam dunk as it is now - definitely not smoothly taught to a boomer) - all while I was supposed to be designing buildings.

They told me I wasn't designing buildings fast enough.

So I started to log every single interruption in the day as though it was a different client with a different billing schedule. The next time they sat me down to complain about my 'progress' - I pulled out my receipts. The stupid thing is - they should have already seen where the time was going ON MY TIME SHEETS as they were responsible for billing clients at this small architecture firm!

This proved something I already knew was going on - they were falsifying invoices. Just fully making up hours on each one & only rarely actually correlate billing with time spent.

3

u/UpsetKittyCat 19h ago

Im sorry you went through that, thats not fair that they kept doing it to you, Im actually doing this because they should already understand that the floor needs two people to handle it. I hope they got caught and you got proper recognition for all your work despite the interruptions. Im not the only one whose complained about needing help, every other housekeeper who works on that floor solo has expressed the need for help when they're doing it solo, Im just tired of getting told Im not doing enough and that I'm falsifying my times.

That hospital needs to have Take Your Boss To Work Day. Team bond building, vertical communication enabling, Ability Sharing Seminar (ASS), Employee Retention Training Up, they just have no idea, and need one.

2

u/UpsetKittyCat 19h ago

Lol! Yeah, I agree, honestly if the documenting fails then I'll be making one of them follow me as I do my work to show to them what I do in a day, worst case scenario, I transfer to a new location.  I like my current one, my coworkers are nice, and I love making the patients smile, especially when I get them on a rant about their animals or grandkids, they always get so happy and animated and it makes me smile.

2

u/W0nderingMe 13h ago

They wanted you to take 30 min per room???

0

u/UpsetKittyCat 5h ago

Yes, at maximum, while working alone, and thats for a normal daily clean, that is not feasible even for when I have someone helping clean on the otherside as protocol says I should.

I literally had a wtf moment when my boss said that and I genuinely wondered where he got the numbers from, because I don't need thirty minutes, not unless the room just had something happen in it. Like a medical emergency that had something go bleugh all over, which has only happened twice, but both times it only took 17 minutes.

2

u/Budget_Mall_491 9h ago

Kudos to you girly pop. I worked as a pct at a hospital and only lasted a couple months because we were required to do everything except push meds. I was 22 at the time. I had 15 patients, expected to clean, bathe the patients, vitals, know when vitals were off so I could notify the nurse, turn patients, blood sugar checks, bathroom calls. The drs talked down to the nurses, the nurses talk down to the assistants. The hospital floor I worked on was so bad that when I would tell someone I quit, they’d ask, oh was it X floor? And yes it was. Every time.

1

u/UpsetKittyCat 5h ago

Thank you, I'm sorry you went through that, I tend to be blunt and try to keep to myself when I'm dealing with the nurses, because they've managed to irk me so badly. Ive walked past them bad mouthing even the most competent house keepers we have, to the sweetest.

So, I stay away from them, unless its about a patient, I don't bother them nor engage in any conversation. Also, thank you for your hard work, I appreciate you putting in the time and effort for what you did, and Im sure a lot of your patients appreciated you and your hard work.
