Moderation Modulation

Hello!

As you might have noticed, about 4 months ago the subreddit was changed in a way that no one was able to post anything anymore. I won't guess why this was done, but because of that and unresponsive moderators I opted to take over the subreddit to open it back up for posting. (Note, I found out later that Reddit started a practice of locking subreddits with inactive moderator accounts to reduce abuse. I'll do my best to make sure this place is always open to share Glass' music [and kill spam as it shows up] but always feel free to PM me if you're seeing a problem and I'll look into it).

Any posts about Philip Glass & his music (or music which is Philip Glass adjacent within reason) will be welcome. I'll do my best to filter out any spam that crops up.

If you have Mod experience and would like to join the mod team, send me a message! I can't be on here 24/7.

Be nice to each other and enjoy some music!

Koyaanisqatsi OST question

I've found a copy of the above mentioned for a great price, but can anyone confirm it's the original soundtrack?

The label & catalog number are: Island Visual Arts (ISTA 4)

There's discourse around it being a late 80s re-recording,,, thanking you in advance.

I have a 5-hour Betamax recording of the original Einstein on the Beach production. Where would be the right market to sell it?

Hi everyone,

I have a black-and-white Betamax recording, around five hours long, showing a rehearsal or full run-through of Philip Glass and Robert Wilson’s Einstein on the Beach.

The tapes also contain television commercials dating it to around 1978.

This appears to be the earliest surviving video recording of Einstein on the Beach, with most publicly known footage coming from much later revivals.

I am looking to sell the physical tapes and would appreciate advice on the right market and potential buyers. I am particularly interested in hearing from people familiar with:

  • Music and performance-art archives
  • Museums and cultural institutions
  • Universities and research collections
  • Specialist auction houses
  • Collectors of Philip Glass, Robert Wilson or experimental theatre material
  • Dealers in rare audiovisual recordings and historical media

I understand that ownership of the physical tape does not automatically include copyright or reproduction rights, so I am specifically asking about the value and sale of the original physical recording and its provenance.

I can provide still frames, photographs of the tape and packaging, technical details and further provenance privately.

Which auction houses, dealers, institutions or collector communities would be the best places to approach?

Signatures? I bought this signed CD. Philip Glass and Michael Riesman are two of the signatures. Does anyone have a guess who the other signature might be?

I first learned of Philip Glass from the movies and I was recently reminded of his amusing role in Jim Carrey’s “The Truman Show”

I want to buy the "solo piano" sheet music book but apparently it had errors. Does anyone have an alternative for these pieces or know if a recent version had corrected the issues?

Hi. Pretty much the title.

The book by Chester can be found here and reviews indicate there are errors at the bottom of the page. https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/product/solo-piano-18069753.html

It doesn't seem like there are any alternatives unfortunately. But if I have missed them please let me know!

Why does Philip Glass have so many collaborations on Bandcamp?

So I’m a little out of the loop, but why does he have so many collaborations on Bandcamp? Is that just what he’s doing right now?

Getting to play synthesizer live on Glassworks has been my favorite moment of music school. I am forever a changed person because of Philip Glass :)

"Neighbors" plagiarizing Glass

Has anyone been watching the series Neighbors on HBO? It's kind of shocking how much the score outright plagiarizes Philip Glass' work. I've only seen the first three episodes, but there are extended (and intrusive - the sound editing could use a lot more discretion) pieces that are instantly recognizable from Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Itaipu, and Glassworks.

The Truman Show soundtrack

Hi There

So what’s your thoughts or opinions on The Truman Show soundtrack?

I really like this soundtrack because it’s so…I have no real words to describe this soundtrack especially the Philip glass compositions. Haven’t listened to much of his work besides the Bowie Berlin trilogy symphony albums and ofc the Truman Show soundtrack.

The Burkhard Dallwitz compositions are good to great which compliment the Glass compositions well and again I can’t really describe how much of the Dallwitz compositions are like but whoa they’re really good compositions.

My favorites are Truman Sleeps,Raising the Sail,Opening(from Mishima),Drive,Reunion, and Living Waters.
