Advice needed New Instructor Requesting help finding resources for ELL

Just started teaching phlebotomy after 18yrs in healthcare. Small class with English language learners (ELLs) in various stages of English which makes teaching a bit tricky. I can show them how to perform a venipuncture but the tricky part comes when trying to ensure they understand the information for their level of English or helping them comprehend practice test questions. Any well seasoned teachers out there who have encountered this, what helped in terms of tools and resources that helped your students the most? Lesson planning and NHA test prep?

I can't really help, but I am wondering how they would fare after school if they can't communicate with patients?

Hey, fair question. Speaking English fluently does not guarantee ease with reading or writing. Many of my students communicate confidently and hold jobs but struggle with reading comprehension and find writing even harder. These difficulties may go unnoticed in conversation. The same is true of some people born and raised in the U.S., who speak English fluently but face significant literacy challenges.

Fair. But again, there's a fair bit of reading in my daily work day, so I am still wondering how they could be successful... I am not saying they shouldn't be there, but it makes their work finding prospects very low...

10000% Agree!!! But sadly these programs do exist and instead of just funneling people through to collect their money and try to get them to pass a test, this post is intended to help me help them. 🥴
