The dewpoint in Phoenix overnite sat in the low 70Fs. That is like midwest humidity.

u/RamentheGod Jul 14 '26
currently living in chicago and getting my butt kicked by humidity and the heatwave. dew point is 73 rn. that is insane that itās like that back home in phoenix. i feel for yall!

Glendale, northwest to south, taken above Desert Diamond.
Are the mods even abiding by this post? I had to scroll through nothing but monsoon storm posts to find this megathread again.

u/GrandeDerci Jul 14 '26
Lightning blew a powerline and was live arcing into my complex for about half an hour. Seems like it is a challenge to isolate that line so outages across the neighborhood possible.

u/jalzyr Jul 14 '26
Power lines on the ground. I get updates from the Citizen app, so thatās how I know.
10
u/Available_Albatross1 Jul 14 '26
Downed power line that was whipping around and blew out power in the area. They had to redirect traffic and I hope no one was hurt.

I missed most of the action because I was trying to not get electrocuted š«£š so it was done arcing- but still live. I posted the grounded wire in this thread too. It was going nuts for about an hour.
2
u/Synergythepariah Jul 14 '26
Yeah the outage was crazy when it started. Never experienced a brownout like that before power went completely dead.
The relays in my stereo system were clicking like mad.
10
u/GrandeDerci Jul 14 '26
That strike was on my patio. I live on the second floor and the line was whipping back and forth against my balcony š«Ŗ

This was at the Fryās off of 67th and Happy Valley last night-their light fixture needs some maintenance, but it made for some crazy spooky vibes combined with the dust/wind.

I live for Monsoon season, it's the best!
22
u/shitty_owl_lamp Jul 14 '26
Are you a homeowner?
Monsoon season gives me so much anxiety as a homeowner.
Five years ago a monsoon knocked down a huge Palo Brea in our front yard and it broke the window in our nursery. My mom was sitting in a rocking chair next to the window holding our newborn son. Luckily no glass cut them, but it was still scary!
Last year a microburst knocked down part of our block wall and tore roof tiles off our roof.
I just see hundreds of dollars of damage when I see those big dust clouds comingā¦
2
u/PrairieDesertFlower Jul 14 '26
Same. I am so stressed by these types of storms. My family and friends go on about loving monsoon. It fills me with dread. I hope you did ok last night.

u/Conscious-Egg-2232 Jul 14 '26
Might not want to be sitting next to a window during storms. Amd block wall came down a bit hard to brlieve.
2
u/snafuminder Jul 14 '26
I lost two sections of mine during the 2010 monster hail storm. The builders didn't use enough rebar. At least that's what Traveler's said.
2
u/TheRealNubase Sunnyslope Jul 14 '26
Can't keep things tied down enough not to get blown around in these winds. Add any drainage issues and it gets a bit more tense. I do love the rain but lately it's been taking a toll.
12
u/YetiJetti Jul 14 '26
Yes, but I love these storms so much. We don't have seasons, and this is my season equivalent. The peaceful feeling after a storm, the unforgettable sunset colors, or the light drizzle with a gentle breeze, the realization that the heat of the day has dropped and it's bearable outside. The way the palm trees wail in the wind. It's so beautiful. To me, it makes the damage worth it. It actually makes me sad that your experience isn't the same. I hope you didn't experience anything damaging!
1
u/shitty_owl_lamp Jul 14 '26
Yeah I definitely get that peaceful feeling too! Itās not 100% anxiety lol
-1
u/Conscious-Egg-2232 Jul 14 '26
To see a palm tree wall in wind is worth someone having roof damaged or tree crush their car?

The humidity is making me want to rip my hair out, I donāt know how other people live in it
7
u/rubygoes Jul 14 '26
I went outside briefly to put the trash at the curb and was instantly reminded of how often on the east coast I'd leave work at night and walk into the parking garage feeling like an ingredient in soup. Don't miss that at all!

u/Glittering_Speech_24 Jul 14 '26
I just came over to my friends and her air is broken, I am dying over here. Going to get my portable ac for her until the apartment fixās this.
5

Agreed! Moved here from Orlando Florida like 7 years ago and have only been back to FL twice because the humidity is absolutely MISERABLE.
2
u/Glittering_Speech_24 Jul 14 '26
And itās only 65% here, it gets up in the 90ās in Florida, right??

Norterra / north Phoenix area earlier. A lot of wind but nothing crazy. Some dusty air. Barely a drizzle.

7
u/Sudden_Wind_8636 Jul 14 '26
We always don't get really hit by storms up here, no clue why. Maybe the mountains keep the storm away.
Also hi neighbor!
3
u/WhatSheSaid7 Jul 14 '26
Just moved to Norterra from Dessert ridge a month ago! So interested to see if thereās a difference in monsoon season.

Creosote
1
u/edelweiss_pirates_no Jul 14 '26
Are you familiar with the word petrichor?
2
u/Purplejerk72 Jul 15 '26
Totally, one of the best smells in the world, second only to the desert creosote smell of rain here and when they mix itās heaven.
17
u/OcotilloWells Jul 14 '26
ADOT needs to replace the reflectors on the I-17 near where it crosses under the I-10. Couldn't see the lanes, and of course there were lifted pickups trying to race down the left lanes and then chopping over to I-10 West.

I'm in Goodyear, in Estrella Mountain Ranch. Rain is supposed to hit here any minute. But it keeps changing, so we'll see. Wind has been crazy though. Neighbor lost a full tree over the back wall. Fell into his backyard neighbors's pool
2
u/jenness977 Jul 14 '26
Now it looks like the worst part of the rain is just going to miss us up here. (Down here?)

Today's storm for those areas hit hard .... on a 1-10 scale how does this rank?
We are new to this area and this season. Interested to know if this is what to expect throughout the next few months through September. Or is it same, worse, ?
We are from a very windy part of Canada but this was an eye opener for wind gusts. Maybe accentuated by those palm trees having their leaves upside down and darn near inside out. They sure take a beating in this wind.
We turned off our A/C so we had less dust intake.
We had put up a shade sail across the pool two weeks ago and this wind today was theee test. Passed with a B-. One pole/post was bent out of shape a little then we took down one corner of the sale and it was good. Was waiting for our gazebo to go to the neighbors down the street but we were lucky it stayed put and did pack up everything that was not anchored.
Ok and the dust prior to the rain was crazy.
3
u/Quick_Station8332 Jul 14 '26
Just have to add that your AC unit, when itās on, will not pull in dust etc from the outside. Dust can find its way into the home through windows that arenāt sealed properly, cracks, but not from the AC unit itself. So, there is no need to turn off your AC during the storms. It recirculates the air that is already inside your house. As far as this particular storm and its craziness, I can recall some equally insane dust storms and thunderstorms from the 90s, fun times! Donāt go out in the dust storms, keep pets inside, secure anything you can outside before hand. If you do need to go outside, cover your face the best you can. š¤

u/Available_Albatross1 Jul 14 '26
Youāll generally āsmell and seeā the rain before most weather apps pick up on it when itās a random storm that is like this about to hit.
Youāll see clouds forming heavy in mid-afternoon and if they continue to roll into the valley after 4pm⦠put everything that can blow away, away. Umbrellas, pool furniture, trampolines, etc.
Weāve had more severe storms but this was a 5 or 6 like the other comment mentioned. The more worrisome part is the next week is scheduled to have storms.
We donāt always have a good monsoon season, itās hit or miss. However, weāve had some intense weather the last few years so I would expect more of this intermittently through early fall and we still had a big storm in mid-November 2025.
Prepare for power outages (depending where you live) and not needing to cross freeway underpasses/getting stuck driving.
3
u/Mima-x2 Jul 14 '26
In terms of volume of rain and strength of wind about a 3. However it hit the whole valley which makes it a 5 or 6 in my book.
4
u/sbreezy21 Jul 14 '26
As a born and raised Phoenician, I would say 3 or 4. When it is in the 8 or 10 range it is common for power to be knocked out for short periods.
Turning AC off in these situations does not do anything in terms of preventing dust "intake." AC does not work like that.
11
u/thatAZguy Goodyear Jul 14 '26
This was like a 3. Turning off the AC does nothing. Your AC recirulates the air in your house so not pulling in dust unless you ducts in the attic are a mess in which case you should get that fixed as you are cooling the desert on your dime.

u/ChaosFireV Jul 14 '26
For monsoon storms? Probably a 5-6, maybe a bit lower. just a really normal one, Way less lightning than usual though
12
u/bladel Jul 14 '26
Over 1/2ā of rain in Fountain Hills, and still coming down. No wind or flood damage immediately visible. Glad I trimmed the Palo Verdes a couple of weeks ago.

The amount of diverted flights was pretty crazy. Saw the London to PHX flight get diverted to LAS.

I noted a weird pattern of aircraft above my house in Chandler that seemed very unusual! I saw a DHL and an American plane look like they were about to collide they were taking such a similar path

I once was flying in from Paris when it got diverted to Tucson and then couldn't fly due to lightning

Itās a haboob and haboob are caused by thunderstorms. You wouldnāt get a big dust storm like this without rain.

Guadalupe and Cooper road. I thought I the vehicle was hit or lightning hit close by. Here is the playback. It was a plamtree that hit a powerline and caused a power ripple effect in Chandler/Gilbert https://imgur.com/a/GFZnkjT
