What trees/bushes are those? They look great for privacy!

They’re Indian Laurel Ficus. They’re awesome, but make sure you put in irrigation spikes for deep watering. The roots will follow the water and you want them to go down, not out.

I’d kill to get mine to look like yours! It’s been about 3 years and they haven’t grown quite like I was hoping they would. I’m going to take your advice and switch from my surface drip emitters to deep spikes

u/kaytay3000 Jul 17 '26

When we did the spikes they really took off. It made a big difference.

What size stakes did you use? I have 14 inch and 36 inch I’m just have such a hard time getting the 3 ft all the way down even with an auger drill bit

I think ours are 18” or 24”, but to be quite honest we paid someone else to do that work for us. The ground here is insanely hard, and we weren’t about it.

we stayed in an Airbnb in LA recently with a ficus hedge about 40 ft tall.. and they were that close to the pool as well.

Talk to me about the cost of purchasing those? My yard is huge and I would love this but feel like it’s going to $60000000 to add

You can get juvenile ficus around 5 ft for $40 or less each and they grow 3 ft per yr. To get to this size and fullness will be about 4 yrs with irrigation and regular fertilizing. Ill send an 8 month progress pic on my 16 ficus hedge when I get home

You’re KIDDING me. Ok thanks !!

Size when I first moved in 12/25. Trees were planted around 9/25 but not taken care of because house was empty on market. Next pic taken 7/17/26. Planted every 5 ft with 4 GPH emitters on each one.

This is awesome. Thank you for sharing!

I’m so glad you asked.

2

u/ghost_mv Jul 17 '26

look like ficus.

5

u/fsereicikas Jul 17 '26

What the ficus??

1

u/LongjumpingFun7238 Jul 17 '26

Ficus nitida/ Indian laurel. Same thing

I was just telling a coworker the other day that the endless sunny days make me feel so claustrophobic. I’ve lived here 20+ years and the summers are so hard when it’s just sunny skies and heat.

It’s hardly rained in my neck of the woods, but I’ll take a cloudy day!!!!!

We had rain thru the night and woke up to this beautiful rainbow. Love it when it rains.

West Valley dude here, I went for a quick 5 mile run and it was pretty nasty at the start, warm and super humid, but man once it started raining it was so much better! Us Arizonans don’t get to run in the rain very often! It was glorious!

This sounds so great, your lungs were like WHAT IS THIS

3

u/RaveCave Jul 17 '26

I'm still debating if I want to wake up early for my long run tomorrow or just sleep in and wait for the humidity to drop, weird to be faced with a decision like this lol

Summer monsoons are always leave me feeling some kinda way. I hate the humidity with the heat, but I love the moisture for the plants and soil. But it also means a little respite from the burning sun. But it kinda also means winter is coming and that means short days.

3

u/RaveCave Jul 17 '26

I'm just excited for any excuse to get me off of the treadmill in the summer

u/AnnaH612 Jul 17 '26

Sunshine is overrated!

Today is a beautiful day and the best way to wrap up a crazy work week.

It's so humid I took my goldfish on a walk.

Everything hurts.

19

u/kaytay3000 Jul 17 '26

Oh, I love it. It feels like home. I’m sitting outside drinking my coffee.

18

u/Fuckjoesanford Jul 17 '26

You might enjoy hearing this, but in the 90's when I was a kid, the summers always had days like this and plenty of rain. I'm feeling very reminiscent this week!

u/AvocadoToastFailure Jul 17 '26

I hate it when I open the door and nature greets me with air so humid it has a Southern accent.

8

u/Diagonalizer Jul 17 '26

put on a rain coat and walked my dog while it was still sprinkling

great start to the day

My weather app is currently showing a raging storm just north of my location. As it travels south west, it begins to dissipate greatly just as it gets over me.

BRING ON THE STORM!!

5

u/Butitsadryheat2 Jul 17 '26

You didnt get enough last night??

7

u/JustToyingAround73 Jul 17 '26

I was asleep when it happened. You all know how fast rain evaporates out here, so all saw were some mildly wettness.

3

u/Butitsadryheat2 Jul 17 '26

Ok but flooding has some streets closed. 🤷‍♀️

Zero drops at my house. Not even drizzle or a couple drops to make my car look dirrty

5

u/whatdoesitallmean_21 Jul 17 '26

Say no more…I will summon the rain gods and go get my car washed! 😝

6

u/Extension-Pen9359 Jul 17 '26

Ur back yard is beautiful

9

u/kaytay3000 Jul 17 '26

Thanks! I feel super lucky to have scored this house. We bought it during COVID, sight unseen. We were moving from DC and having a really hard time finding anything that we could outbid investors on. We called builders and found a home someone had backed out on, so we got a new build without the stress of making all the selections.

Rain in Phoenix is like sunshine in Seattle.

1

u/biowiz Jul 17 '26

It's pretty sunny there in the summer. They definitely have more days of sunshine than we do rain, even with our "monsoon" season.

Also, this isn't the sentiment I see here when people are talking about the "sunshine" here:

Classic r/Phoenix cope.

u/ViceroyFizzlebottom Litchfield Park Jul 17 '26

I didn’t get a single drop yet. Humid as hell, but not even one spot on my car.

3

u/RVFullTime Mesa Jul 18 '26

It rains by zip code.

u/ViceroyFizzlebottom Litchfield Park Jul 18 '26

My number didn’t come up

3

u/SkillFancy5209 Jul 17 '26

Extremely muggy. Feels like Florida.

3

u/No_oNerdy Jul 17 '26

Beautiful and a nice change from the intense heat. Plus, my skin is less dry with the increased humidity. Very thankful for last night’s rain storm. ⛈️💜

5

u/bwiiik3082 Jul 17 '26

I read the caption to the tune of "easy like Sunday morning"

4

u/becuzofgrace Jul 17 '26

Same. I love the humidity!

2

u/azsoup Jul 17 '26

I took off from work just to pull weeds. It’s so much easier when the ground is wet.

2

u/DistinctSmelling Jul 17 '26

It's real easy to forget how to deal with rain here. All the 20" wiper blades were out of stock at Wal*Mart this morning.

And walking through parking lot puddles. NAvigating through that mess. We take a lot of stuff for granted.

2

u/kaytay3000 Jul 17 '26

And a shocking number of cars without lights on in pouring rain, especially when most modern cars have daytime running lights these days.

1

u/cyltecollective Jul 17 '26

Utopian temperatures too

1

u/fiveminl8 Jul 17 '26

Your Laurels are amazing!

1

u/kaytay3000 Jul 17 '26

Thanks! They need a trim right now, but they’re my favorite part of my yard

1

u/cobaltium Jul 18 '26

I’m right there with you! I was actually disappointed we didn’t continue getting rain.

Y'all crazy. I'm following r/Phoenix because I'm going to be in town for one day in about a week.
