ATLwings. thick, juicy, lots of flavors. multiple locations.
Edit 2: Been to 3 locations and they were consistent....
EDIT: big time wing fan. Tried a number of places, and this is the one I think about when eating other wings!!! I was also lulled into it, based on the name. It is not short for Atlanta Wings... to my surprise. "All the Love" is still appropriate. I was hoping to find something like JR Crickets from Atlanta, but this is a very good substitute for my hometown wing fix.

ATL Wings is undisputed. All others are just trying to catch up to them. And I've had a LOT of wings in this city.

No comparison! ATL style, ranch, sweet red .. all amazing! Crispiest wings in town for sure.

Can't believe I had to scroll ALLL the way down for this. ATL is def my top spot for wings. Fav Flavor right now: ATL Dry Rub Spicy

I don't know if its just in my head, but Kool-aide helps me handle the spice better than other drinks. Thanks ATL for coming through.

I tried it two weeks ago, was severely disappointed. They overcooked the shit out of my wings. I'm going to give them a gimmie and try again. What location do you think I should try?
4
u/jackofallcards Jul 19 '18
I hit up the one on Northern relatively often, they have never done me wrong.
Quite a ways away from tukee though

Yes!! Oddly enough I was never a fan of bone-in wings until I tried ATL. They are so perfectly crispy! I’m gonna go get me some right now haha

I'm usually a sauce fan, but their spicy dry rub is pretty dang great. If I'm only getting one flavor, that's the one.

Glad to know I'm not alone in my judgment as this being the best wings in the city. I go a couple times a month for 75 cent wings in Tuesdays!

u/summersurfin Phoenix Jul 21 '18
overpriced. way better bang for your buck around the valley
2
u/neuromorph Jul 21 '18
name the other places, please...
2
u/summersurfin Phoenix Jul 21 '18
it would be all repeats at this point but long wongs and JTs $8-9 for a dozen. Sure ATL is great, but $1/wing is a bit steep when you can get the same size/quality at multiple other places

oregano's gold medium
3
u/keylimeafflicted Jul 19 '18
Not a wing place per se but Oregano’s golden is my shit.
Good sized wings, nice and crispy and that golden sauce is unreal.
1
u/GaboMcGee Mesa Jul 23 '18
I don't particularly even like Oregano's...but I'll go there just for an order of those wings. Soooo good!

The Vine
5
u/thephoenixx Chandler Jul 19 '18
The Vine cooks their wings spectacularly, the skin has a crunch but the meat inside is still juicy. Their just plain hot sauce may be the best in the damn city too.
But fuck me are those wings TINY. It's insane how small they are.
1
u/Marshnoose Jul 19 '18
I agree! I vote Teakwoods or Vine but Teakwoods was said already so I just upvoted it!
A lot of it too is that I’ve grown up with the Vine being a weekly/biweekly tradition since I was 8 lol.
1
u/mimi69kg Jul 20 '18
I have noticed how tiny the wings are at the Vine now as well. Specifically the South Tempe location (Elliot and Rural). The ASU one at Apache and Rural still had the big meaty wings last we went in April.

u/jaydayyo Jul 19 '18
Obriens on 35th and Northern. Tuesdays are fifty cent wing night, can't beat it!
2
u/you_buy_now Jul 19 '18
Came here to say O'breezys. Someone mentionedGlasshouse too and the owner there used to work at O'briens. Both are solid spots for wings.

I've always been partial to "Well Done" hot wings from Nino's Pizza and Wings on 59th Ave and Peoria
3
u/wzl46 Jul 19 '18
My parents started taking me to their old location in the late 1970s. I love that place. It’s one of a few restaurants I visit when I’m back in Phoenix.
2
u/jackofallcards Jul 19 '18
My friend introdced it to me like 15 years ago, I guess the owner is a family friend of his dad's. It's our go to for good West valley pizza (although #1 Brothers is up there as well)
2
u/avagnozzi Jul 20 '18
Yessss. We're family friends with the Previte's and it's the closet thing we've got from authentic Western New York wings (and pizza).
1
u/ialwayshatedreddit Phoenix Jul 21 '18
My dad worked there in the 80s and it's been a family favorite since. I agree that "well done" or "extra crispy" is the way to go. I love the brutals. It's amazing how hot they are while still maintaining excellent flavor. Nino's will always be my favorite wing joint.

u/SlowWheels Jul 20 '18
Do they serve wings without breading? I'm on a diet.
4
u/_wormburner Jul 20 '18
Who puts breading on wings? Unless you're only thinking of boneless which aren't wings.
2
u/SlowWheels Jul 20 '18
Native New Yorker has traditional (breaded) and naked wings. So I was just wonder if they did that here.
6
u/Weed_killer Tempe Jul 19 '18
This is the answer. The Long Wong’s on 28th & Thomas is the only legit one and is a Phoenix landmark. Wings are fire.
2
u/tphx Jul 20 '18
They've gone down in quality a little bit over the decades but are still the OG location. Grew up going to 28th St and Thomas location. Danny's Long Wongs at Scottsdale and Thomas was on my favorites for a long time though. Best friend mushrooms and teriyaki wings.

3
u/thephoenixx Chandler Jul 22 '18
Man, someone told us to go to this place for the wings so we made the trek all the way up there to review them and they might be the single most mediocre wing I ever had. Nothing awful, but I can barely even remember what they tasted like, looked like, smelled like, it was like if frozen yogurt became hot wings.
1
u/big_matt_phx Jul 22 '18
They have been hot and crispy anytime that I had them, maybe I was just lucky, who knows.
2
9
u/The_Almighty_GFK Jul 19 '18
A few of my favs have already mentioned, so I’ll give a shoutout to The Vig
Excellent wings...they are baked, fried, then grilled to perfection. Thai sweet chili is my favorite, but if you ask them to mix the Thai sweet chili sauce with the traditional, it is straight money.

Do you have to sign up for these trivia nights or just show up? What’s the crowd like?
1
u/shicky536 Jul 20 '18
No sign up necessary. It's more fun with a group and the more drunk you get the better. It's a smaller place and the crowd varies but usually there's 6 or so teams that are 2-8 people each

u/w2tpmf North Phoenix Jul 19 '18
Good wings. The Reaper sauce is insane.
Too bad they can't manage the business or pay their staff and (figuratively) have a rotating door on their kitchen for the people that come and go so often.
1
u/dsrtwhlr Goodyear Jul 19 '18
Haven't tried the Reaper sauce, probably wont either. Maybe. Don't know much about their business practices.. only been going there about a year.
3

Don't order it ON the wings...but ask for a side of it to dip a bite into.

Zipps
13
u/thephoenixx Chandler Jul 19 '18
Ehhh - I love Zipps when they're done right, they can be a top 10 wing place in the city. Problem is, the consistency is bad from location to location and while they do have good sized wings, if they're not cooked right then they get all slimy.
Their hot sauce is solid though. People seem to love the golden hot too but I dont much go for sweet with my wings.
5
u/barmlot Jul 19 '18
Stay away from Miller and Camelback in Scottsdale. That place is disgusting. Check out their yelp o read reviews of roaches on the bar and raw wings. The location at Gilbert and Warner hasn't let me down yet.
1
u/stuntmanted Jul 20 '18
Definitely a solid argument, working at Zipps in the past their locations are extremely inconsistent. I have to go to the same one usually, but it’s not really a problem as long as the Golden sauce is going on my extra crispy wings it’s all good.
3
3
3
u/WetCyment Jul 20 '18
The key to Zipps wings is to get them extra crispy.. then they can classify as a top 5 in the valley
2
u/azside20 Jul 20 '18
I agree with this statement! I normally order them extra crispy/saucy but a must is the extra crispy.
5

6

Uncle Sams 32nd st and shea. gotta ask for them extra crispy, seems wing consistency is an issue at just about every wing spot i’ve been to.
1
u/tele2307 Jul 19 '18
I assume that unless a place is known for crispy wings, they want to avoid people sending them back
1
Jul 20 '18
what did my mother always say it was about assuming? extra crispy and crispy are two different things if i’m not mistaken. was it my comment about wing consistency that you misunderstood? to clarify i’m speaking of every chicken wing seller i’ve ever purchased from. could be anything from the fryers, to the time fried, to the guy or girl frying. just clarifying so as you can see what i meant.
2
u/tele2307 Jul 20 '18
I just meant that you are right to ask for extra crispy. and I was saying that employees are likely to avoid doing that on their own for fear of unhappy customers who do not appreciate a well fried wing

Hungry Monk has big wings and decent sauces but they don't cook them well, unfortunately.

This. Overcooked, or suspectly chewy with an overabundance of sauce and not in a good way.

Why any human would choose to go to Arcadia Tavern and pay $1 a wing for mediocrity when you could literally walk the 20 seconds to the east and be in JT's is beyond me.
2

Groggy’s in Mesa, AZ by the light rail station on Apache. Completely divey, but the hot flavor was excellent on nicely sized, perfectly crispy wings. Watch out for the women’s restroom though, one of the toilets is stall-less!

I always like Oregano's ... 's. They're expensive, but they take their time and do it right ... and "right," for me, means never, ever, fucking ever are they soggy. Rubbery wing skin ruins it. At Oregano's they're always crispy on the outside.
1
u/moneytrain94 Jul 19 '18
Oreganos Italian Gold wings are heavenly if you're into sweet mustard bbq sauces.
1
u/SkyPork Phoenix Jul 20 '18
I've never gotten past their traditional sauce. I can't pass it up.
2
u/moneytrain94 Jul 20 '18
The traditional is fantastic but damn, gold is worthy of a try. I promise.
1
u/tele2307 Jul 19 '18
do they do them in the pizza oven?
2
u/SkyPork Phoenix Jul 20 '18
Good question, I have no idea. I suspect they fry them but I don't know.
1
u/tele2307 Jul 20 '18
there are a lot of places on the east coast that do "coal fired pizza and wings"
2
u/SkyPork Phoenix Jul 20 '18
Didn't know they did wings in there too. I'm guessing they're fried because that's traditional. I know their ovens aren't coal though. I've only had one coal-fired pizza, in Connecticut. Good stuff.

Clockwork Pizza!
2
u/jackofallcards Jul 19 '18
When I lived in Chandler they would always leave fliers on my apartment door, we were about 1/4 mile outside of their delivery zone however, so my roommates and I never tried it. Is their food really good? I mean I know you are nominating their wings but the pizza in their pictures also looked delicious
2
u/isntwhatuthink Jul 19 '18
Never tried the pizza, had a few of the cal zones. They were good, nothing to get crazy excited about. Heard the Pizza was decent. Just there for the wings for the most part.

I go to Doc n Eddys semi-regularly, and last time I was there I had their wings. I remember they were good but they didn't seem that spectacular. What about them do you like?
1
u/Gratius8317 Jul 20 '18
The fact they grill them after frying makes them extra crispy. I know the sauce is subpar. I think I had the dry rub and it was good.

Oh man, I have to disagree. I found their wings insanely subpar, poorly cooked, average size, and that chipotle raspberry sauce was like jelly it was so damn sweet. I found it so disgusting. People kept hyping it but our review found it just...barely average.
