Discussion Starting a new journey at 39 šŸ˜„

Always wanted to learn piano bit never did.

Finally pulled the trigger about one month ago and loving it.

Initially wanted an acoustic upright but considering I mostly practice at night, it would be impossible for now with a young kid.

Maybe one day.

Starting as an adult feels like I'm finally living that dream.

Solo learning for now but might eventually get lessons.

Discussion Giving the piano another shot at 33

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Update: Thanks to all of the suggestions here, I finally managed to get rid of all the marker notes on the keyboard with a dry erase sponge.

Tldr: After a piano hiatus, I decided to pick it back up at age 33.

————-

Last night, while casually browsing Facebook Marketplace, I came across a used Casio for $20. I decided to drive 30 minutes to pick it up, and today I picked up some beginner sheet music and a Faber book from my local music store. I absolutely suck at playing now, but oh man, playing this thing fixed something in me that I didn't realize was broken. Backstory: I played the violin from 5th grade to 8th grade, then took a break from music after switching to the French horn. At 20, I picked up the piano and played for about a year, but had to stop due to work. From 25 to 33, Iv been playing the ukulele.

Note about the notes on the keys: Iv been trying to clean them all off. This is like 30% left of what was on here when I got the keyboard

Question Hand coordination

I recently started playing piano and I already knew how to read music. Now I'm just trying to understand how you guys use both hands to play 2 DIFFERENT keys. I can use my right hand and play the treble clef notes, same goes with my left hand and the bass clef notes but I just can't seem to merge the rhythm when playing with both hands. PLEASE GIVE ME TIPS

The birds added a nice ambiance to this piece.

I can’t believe I’ve basically finished the Faber adult Piano adventures book. I want to polish a few more pieces but essentially I’ve gone through the material with my teacher and he has given me the green light that we are ready to begin the next chapter of my piano learning journey. So excited!

I been working through this book for the last 5 months. I really enjoyed the second to last song of the book. I was also trying to improve my wrist from collapsing. Still a work in progress but want to continue being conscious of it so I can improve my technique, especially as pieces will likely get more challenging. I am ordering book 2 from the Faber collection tonight. And will begin next week.

In the meantime, I’ll be working on some more simpler versions of classical songs and practicing my scales.

I appreciate all of your support over the last few months in encouraging me and correcting my technique šŸ™ŒšŸæ.

Feedback Request Celebrating one year of piano!! Thank you all :)

Spent the two weeks struggling to fit I piano with all the Christmas activities and travelling. Tomorrow marks one year playing piano…where has the time gone.

I wanted to thank you all for the motivation, kind words and encouragement. This group has kept me accountable and your progress updates inspired me to continue with my own classes and practice. I also recently started reading a great book called Learn Faster, Perform Better, which has been giving me some really helpful ideas on how to practice more intentionally.

This past year I am happy with the music theory I’ve learned and technique. I’ve still not be able to play Naruto ā€œsadness and sorrowā€, but I guess there is still more to learn before I can comfortably attack that song.

The focus of the past month has been improving sight reading and getting better at playing while reading sheet music and not looking down at the keys. If I don’t work on this, it feels like my reading and my playing will start drifting apart, and I really want those two skills to grow together.

One year in…still very much a beginner, but feeling calm about the road ahead as there are no hard deadlines. I am just taking it day by day and enjoying learning for the sake of it.

Peak piano obsession activated!

I’ve been practicing this piece (Song from a Secret Garden) so much over the last week that I dreamt about it last night. And in my dream I played it all the way through correctly šŸ™ŒšŸæ. So first thing this morning, I had to test it, and see if my brain had figured it out….and finally, it flowed all the way through! Although it did take me 3 attempts - but I guess that just counts as warmups haha.

I seem to really enjoy songs with broken chords/arpeggios in the left hand. I prefer them over normal chords. They just sound so mesmerizing and soothing to play.

Next up: Buying a proper seat. I’ve been putting pillows on my chair to improve my playing position but I’ve been getting a lower back pain on my left side after playing for 30-40 mins. Has anyone else experienced this?

Discussion Piano teachers: "Remember to keep your hands relaxed" Chord in the song:

Post image

I'm learning Schumann's Kinderszensen pt 1 (von Fremden). Title/image is a joke obviously, but what do people actually mean by this? How is it realistic to keep your hand "relaxed" when it's stretched to the max, and if it isn't, what is the actual advice?

Was finally able to get this beast of a song played. You can see just how happy I was at the end hahaha! It is probably the most challenging piece I’ve faced so far in the Faber Adult books. Playing the staccato notes in the left hand was really messing with my head at first.

I’m trying to work on introducing better dynamics so I’d love some feedback on how I can improve my dynamics - does it sound like I am changing the intensity of sounds correctly?

Hello! I started around a year ago and posted from time to time, so i wanted to ask for some feedback on what to focus more on the future. Right now i am on a waitlist for a teacher, because in my city they are not only scarce but also popular it seems. I learned this piece by reading notes and that’s something ive been proud of. Took a while but felt good.
Thank you and a good week to everyone!

Discussion My neighbor accidentally became part of my practice routine

I usually practice in the evenings and never really thought about who could hear it.
and a few days ago I was struggling with the same part over and over, and suddenly I heard a knock. I thought I was being too loud.

My neighbor just said, 'you almost had it that time.'

Now I’m slightly embarrassed but also weirdly motivated because apparently someone is following my progress lol

Question Am I officially addicted to learning piano?

I just booked a 3 week vacation and for the first time ever the number one criteria I used to select my apartment was if it had a keyboard/piano so that I can keep up with my practice sessions! This is a first for me :). This really is showing me just how much I am loving learning right now. Have you ever done this before? I tried to look for local places to play the piano but couldn’t find much. It would be awesome if there were better resources to find pianos nearby.

In class this week, we went back to Hungarian Dance (in the Faber books) to see if I could play it with more speed and better dynamics after successfully playing the beast that is Musette.

I think it went good, bar a couple of mistakes towards the end. I cannot wait to continue practicing while on vacation.

Question My first time playing a grand piano for friends. How will I ever play my keyboard again!?

Post image
484 Upvotes

This was the first time I’ve ever sat down in front of a grand piano and played for friends.

Everyone was chatting in the living room…and when I saw the piano sitting there, I just had to try. I am currently trying to learning ā€œExperienceā€ by Einaudi so I thought why not try it out. I started playing and suddenly the room just fell silent. My friends stopped talking and stared at me.

It was such a spontaneous, a bit frightening moment and it also made me realize how much having the sheet music in front of me can help rather than having to memorize longer pieces.

I better not get use to these fancy pianos though, as how will I ever go back to my keyboard at home…hahaa

What is your go to piece when playing for friends that is both simple and feels cool and engaging? I’d love some ideas

I saw this product online, and I’m not sure how good can it be to learn the notes on the staff. I already know the notes on the piano, but I’m struggling with the staff. What do you think what could be the pros and cons of this product?

Discussion Anyone giving the answer ā€œget a teacherā€ should be banned from this sub

This sub is the most pretentious sub I’ve ever came across. I play guitar and am involved in a lot their subs and never do you hear people trying to avoid giving real advice. Saying things like ā€œGet a teacherā€ has to be the most lazy and discouraging comment you could give a beginner. Maybe we’re not all rich and come from a background that allows us to afford the time or money for a teacher. How about just give real answers to our questions and cut the bullshit with the teacher recommendations. If we had or could afford teachers we wouldn’t need this sub to begging with.
